Exploring these recent modifications, Pharmacy: What It Is and How It Works, Second Edition encompasses all aspects of pharmacy, from the various roles of pharmacists to particular health care-related events to career-planning information. The book first focuses on the core of pharmacy, providing an overview of the field and a chapter dedicated to pharmacists. After an examination of how drug products are developed, used, and priced, it discusses the important topics of pharmacy technicians, information technology, pharmacy automation, and pharmaceutical care. Subsequent chapters cover the various areas where pharmacists work, including in community, hospital, home health care, and government pharmacies. The book concludes with chapters on the pharmaceutical industry and career planning. Each chapter features learning objectives, summaries, discussion questions, exercises, Web sites of interest, and references. Pharmacies have evolved from the corner drugstores of old. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for use in an introductory pharmacology course, Basic Pharmacology: Understanding Drug Actions and Reactions provides an in-depth discussion of how to apply the chemical and molecular pharmacology concepts, a discussion students need for more advanced study. The textbook introduces the principles of chemistry and biology necessary to understand drug interactions at the cellular level. The authors highlight chemical and physical properties of drugs, drug absorption and distribution, drug interactions with cellular receptors, and drug metabolism and elimination. The book begins with a review of chemical principles as they apply to drug molecules, focusing mainly on those for commonly prescribed drugs. The authors use drug structures to illustrate the chemical concepts learned in general and organic chemistry courses. They cover the dynamics of receptors in mediating the pharmacological effects of drugs. They clarify theories, drawn from the scientific literature, which explain drug-receptor interactions and the quantitative relationship between drug binding and its effects at the cellular level. The authors’ extensive use of drug structures for teaching chemical and molecular pharmacology principles, and their emphasis on the relevance of these principles in future professional life makes this book unique. It provides the framework for better understanding of advanced pharmacology and therapeutics topics. Blending medicinal chemistry and pharmacodynamics aspects, this textbook clearly elucidates the essential concepts that form the cornerstone for further work in pharmacology.

Book excerpt: This book tries to determine patients’ perspectives regarding OTC medication, analyses incidence of irresponsible medication, and shows reasons for predisposing factors as well. Three quarter of the participants in this study were knowledgeable about the potential for abuse of some OTC drugs and most named analgesics as the most liable for abuse. Almost one third of the participants came across cases of OTC abuse. Participants were positive towards the health care being provided by their local pharmacy. They felt that pharmacists play an important role in providing advice on OTC medicines use. The OTC drug abuse problem needs to be tackled urgently as shown by the number of participants witnessing such abuse. Patients with higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations were more likely to follow the directions on the packet. Patients with manual occupations were more likely to seek the advice of a pharmacist rather than a doctor if a given OTC product did not work within a recommended time period.
