Book Synopsis Theory and Algorithms for Cooperative Systems by : Don Grundel
Download or read book Theory and Algorithms for Cooperative Systems written by Don Grundel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-08-23 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years, cooperative control and optimization have increasingly played a larger and more important role in many aspects of military sciences, biology, communications, robotics, and decision making. At the same time, cooperative systems are notoriously difficult to model, analyze, and solve — while intuitively understood, they are not axiomatically defined in any commonly accepted manner. The works in this volume provide outstanding insights into this very complex area of research. They are the result of invited papers and selected presentations at the Fourth Annual Conference on Cooperative Control and Optimization held in Destin, Florida, November 2003. This book has been selected for coverage in: • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings) • Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings) • CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences Contents:Mesh Stability in Formation of Distributed Systems (C Ashokkumar et al.)On the Performance of Heuristics for Broadcast Scheduling (C Commander et al.)Coupled Detection Rates: An Introduction (D Jeffcoat)Decentralized Receding Horizon Control for Multiple UAVs (Y Kuwata & J How)Multitarget Sensor Management of Dispersed Mobile Sensors (R Mahler)K-Means Clustering Using Entropy Minimization (A Okafor & P Pardalos)Possibility Reasoning and the Cooperative Prisoner's Dilemma (H Pfister & J Walls)Coordinating Very Large Groups of Wide Area Search Munitions (P Scerri et al.)A Vehicle Following Methodology for UAV Formations (S Spry et al.)Decentralized Optimization via Nash Bargaining (S Waslander et al.)and other papers Readership: Graduate students and researchers in optimization and control, computer science and engineering. Enriched by Jules Feiffer’s splendid illustrations, the wit, wisdom, and wordplay of Norton Juster’s offbeat fantasy are as beguiling as ever. “Comes up bright and new every time I read it . . . it will continue to charm and delight for a very long time yet. And teach us some wisdom, too.” --Phillip Pullman For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams!
Download or read book Empire's Tracks written by Manu Karuka and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empire’s Tracks boldly reframes the history of the transcontinental railroad from the perspectives of the Cheyenne, Lakota, and Pawnee Native American tribes, and the Chinese migrants who toiled on its path. In this meticulously researched book, Manu Karuka situates the railroad within the violent global histories of colonialism and capitalism. Through an examination of legislative, military, and business records, Karuka deftly explains the imperial foundations of U.S. political economy. Tracing the shared paths of Indigenous and Asian American histories, this multisited interdisciplinary study connects military occupation to exclusionary border policies, a linked chain spanning the heart of U.S. imperialism. This highly original and beautifully wrought book unveils how the transcontinental railroad laid the tracks of the U.S. Empire.

Book Synopsis Phantom Pain by : Richard A. Sherman
Download or read book Phantom Pain written by Richard A. Sherman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phantom pain is an intriguing mystery that has captured the imagination of health care providers and the public alike. How is it possible to feel pain in a limb or some other body part that has been surgically removed? Phantom pain develops among people who have lost a limb or a breast or have had internal organs removed. It also occurs in people with totally transected spinal cords. Unfortunately, phantom pain is a medical night mare. Many of the people reporting phantom pain make dispropor tionately heavy use of the medical system because their severe pains are usually not treated successfully. The effect on quality of life can be devas tating. Phantom pain has been reported at least since 1545 (Weir Mitchell as related by Nathanson, 1988) and/ or experienced by such diverse people as Admiral Lord Nelson and Ambroise Pare (Melzack & Wall, 1982; Davis, 1993). The folklore surrounding phantom pain is fascinating and mirrors the concepts about how our bodies work that are in vogue at any particu lar time. Most of the stories relate to phantom limbs and date from the mid-1800s. The typical story goes like this: A man who had his leg ampu tated complained about terrible crawling, twitching feelings in his leg. His friends found out where the leg was buried, dug it up, and found maggots eating it. They burned it, and the pain stopped. Another man complained of a swollen feeling with frequent stinging or biting pains.
