Book excerpt: In the enthralling nautical adventure 'The Phantom Ship,' Captain Frederick Marryat skilfully weaves supernatural elements with maritime lore, inviting readers aboard a spectral vessel that defies the bounds of time and sea. Marryat, a pioneer of the sea story and adept in the literary art, imbues his work with an authenticity that stems from his own naval experiences. The tale is set against the sprawling backdrop of the high seas and delves into the legend of the Flying Dutchman, a ghostly ship doomed to sail the oceans forever. The book's intricate plot, rich in detail and maritime terminology, aligns with the stylistic features and thematic concerns of the 19th-century literary context, dealing with fatalism, superstition, and man's battle against the implacable forces of nature. Frederick Marryat's own seafaring life undoubtedly informed the technical precision and rousing authenticity found in 'The Phantom Ship.' The author's time in the Royal Navy, reaching the rank of captain, provided a wealth of material that informed his fiction. Marryat's firsthand experience lends the book an air of verisimilitude, often blurring the line between fact and fantasy. This novel, written at the height of Marryat's literary career, not only reflects his deep knowledge and passion for the sea but also illustrates his ability to create compelling narratives that resonate with the human experience. 'The Phantom Ship' will captivate readers passionate about maritime adventures and those intrigued by the fusion of historical realism and supernatural myth. It is a book highly recommended for enthusiasts of classic literature, particularly for those who appreciate the finesse with which Marryat navigates through the tempestuous waters of seafaring lore and the human condition. This book will transport you to the deck of the hauntingly immortal Dutchman, through prose as profound and unpredictable as the sea itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the Royal Navy’s FAA since 1945, featuring a survey of the aircraft flown, the conflicts fought, and the daily life of those in service. The RAF’s continuing role in the projection of air power in the defence of the United Kingdom and its overseas interests since the end of the Second World War is well known. However, the same cannot always be said about the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (FAA), in part due to the ten-year gap between the retirement of the Harrier and the arrival of the F-35B and the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. Flying high performance aircraft off a carrier demands not only a high level of skill, but also a considerable amount of courage and determination, not least to land back on a very small piece of real estate bobbing about in a rough sea, often at night, with no possibility of diversion. The nature of these operations has meant that the accident rate and aircrew losses were very high—and accepted as part of the job. With the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth and the Prince of Wales, it is time to redress the balance and bring the FAA’s extraordinary story to the audience it so richly deserves through the words of those air and ground crews who have been part of it since 1945. What emerges is an amazing close-knit esprit de corps, often accompanied by a long-standing and still simmering rivalry between the RAF and the Royal Navy over who should project air power overseas. Enormous respect is shown by the aviators and ships’ senior officers for the aircraft handlers and maintainers, who work long hours in a highly dangerous environment on the flight deck. This first volume looks chronologically at every aircraft type flown in an air defence role since 1945. Involvement in conflicts including Korea, Suez, the Falklands, Bosnia and elsewhere is included, and perforce the cost in human lives, even in everyday operations, frequently emerges. Balancing this are the everyday grind, the good times, the humour, the “runs ashore” and the sense of pride in a job well done. All delivered in the words of the men themselves.

In eight years of conflict 43 Vietnamese Peoples Air Force aircraft were claimed by US Navy and US Marine Corps Phantom II crews, and one single ace crew produced. Navy Phantom IIs scored the first kills of the Vietnam War, in April 1965, as well as scoring the last in January 1973. This volume charts the successes of the navy fighter crews as they encountered 'MiGs, Missiles and AAA' over the jungles of North Vietnam.

Primarily used as a land-based fighter-bomber and reconnaissance platform, its naval origins and the immense contribution made to the US war effort in Vietnam by its original carrier-based versions began its legend. This title examines the unique aspects of the Phantom that made it so crucial to US Navy pilots during the Vietnam War – its massive engine power, long range, speed, the most powerful airborne search and fire-control radar installed in a fighter at the time, and of course its versatility as a ground attack and air-to-air platform. Packed with first hand accounts, unique profile artwork and rare photographs this is the history of one of the most important aircraft to be stationed on carriers off Southeast Asia during the war.
