Book excerpt: Hydrocarbon reservoir performance forecasting is an integral component of the resource development chain and is typically accomplished via reservoir simulation using either numerical or simplified analytical models. Arps (1945) empirically demonstrated that certain reservoirs may decline according to a simple, exponential, hyperbolic, or harmonic relationships; such behavior, however, does not extend to more complex scenarios, such as multi-phase reservoir depletion. Due to this limitation, a popular research interest for many individuals has been to transform the equations governing flow through porous media for more complex reservoirs in such a way as to express reservoir decline in an exponential form analogous to the decline of incompressible liquids reservoirs. The works of the likes of Fraim and Wattenbarger (1987), Fetkovich (1993) and Zhang and Ayala (2014a) clearly indicated such transformations are possible. In this work, it is demonstrated using a compositional-based approach that the molar decline of individual hydrocarbon fluid fractions can be expressed in liquid-analog form using rescaled-exponential equations. This work demonstrates that, by the introduction of a new pseudo-variable, partial pseudo-pressure, it is possible to predict the decline behavior of individual fluid constituents of a variety of reservoir systems ranging from single-phase gas and oil to multi-phase gas condensate and volatile oil reservoirs. Additionally, preliminary work is presented with regard to applying the proposed model for production data analysis, although more work is needed in this area. Case studies are presented to support each of the model capabilities stated above and validate the use of liquid-analog rescaled-exponentials for the prediction of hydrocarbon fraction decline behavior.
