Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers case study of the tridimensional exploration in whole exploration cycle with comprehensive and systematic geological and geophysical studies in the Bongor Basin. Focused on the typical intensively inversed rift basin—the Bongor Basin in Chad, this book establishes petroleum geology model, accumulation model of the typical intensively inversed rift basin and ensemble exploration techniques by studying comprehensively through the lens of structural geology, petrology, geochronology, sedimentology, paleontology, petroleum geochemistry, petroleum geology, and hydrocarbon accumulation dynamics studies on both granite buried hill and sandstone reservoir. Based on the cases in whole exploration cycle and abundant primary research resource (some are first published in public) in the Bongor Basin, this book is a valuable reference for researchers, managers, instructors, and students who engaged in petroleum exploration.

Book excerpt: This volume summarizes in 16 chapters the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its geological setting in the Pannonian Basin. The work was accomplished by a joint effort of the Hungarian Oil and Gas Co. and U.S. Geological Survey. In contrast with other books that discuss the geology of Hungary, this volume identifies, in detail, potential source rocks and reservoir rocks, and evaluates the maturation, generation, migration, and entrapment of hydrocarbons. The outstanding points are: (1) its summary of the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its structural and sedimentological setting in the Pannonian Basin; (2) the identification of geographic areas, structural trends and stratigraphic zones that remain relatively unexplored; and (3) a summary of `petroleum plays' with an assessment of their recoverable, undiscovered resources of oil and gas. This book is primarily for petroleum geologists interested in oil and gas exploration in Hungary, and earth scientists interested in the geology of the Pannonian Basin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this book Petroleum Formation and Occurrence by Bernard Tissot and Dietrich Welte will indeed be welcomed by pertroleum geologists, petroleum geochemists, teachers and students in these fields, and all others who are interested in the origin and accumulation of hydrocarbons in nature. It is indeed a privilege for us to have the opportunity of sharing with these two eminent scientists the wealth of information they have acquired and developed during long careers devoted to concentrated scholarly study and practical investigation of the nature, origin, and occurrence of petroleum. Professor Bernard Tissot graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines in 1954 and from the Ecole Nationale Superieure du Petrole in 1955. In 1955 he received a D. E. S. in geology from the University of Grenoble and then began research work on petroleum geology at the Institut Fran~ais du Petrole. He was made head of the Department of Geochemistry in 1965, and since 1970 has also been teaching organic geochemistry at the Ecole Nationale Superieure du Petrole where he became Profes sor in 1973. Professor Tissot has had a broad and varied background of practical experience. He has been a member of exploration teams in France, New Caledonia, and Sahara. In 196G-1963 he headed a mission of the IFP to the Department of National Development of Australia.

Book excerpt: This unique text offers a friendly, fascinating introduction to the world of petroleum exploration for readers with little or no technical background on the subject. Refreshingly clear and jargon-free, the book covers a wide range of topics, including the underlying rationale for exploration, essential basic geological and geophysical exploration techniques, drilling and logging wells, reserves, and an outline of reservoir geology. A helpful case history of exploration in the North Sea is presented to illustrate how the numerous processes work together, and a lengthy glossary of technical terms serves as an invaluable aid for those approaching the subject for the first time. Perfect for all those interested in petroleum exploration, the book will be especially welcomed by students and by non-geologists working in industry, such as draughtspeople, engineers, accountants, and lawyers.

Book excerpt: Investigations about porosity in petroleum reservoir rocks are discussed by Schmoker and Gautier. Pollastro discusses the uses of clay minerals as exploration tools that help to elucidate basin, source-rock, and reservoir history. The status of fission-track analysis, which is useful for determining the thermal and depositional history of deeply buried sedimentary rocks, is outlined by Naeser. The various ways workers have attempted to determine accurate ancient and present-day subsurface temperatures are summarized with numerous references by Barker. Clayton covers three topics: (1) the role of kinetic modeling in petroleum exploration, (2) biological markers as an indicator of depositional environment of source rocks and composition of crude oils, and (3) geochemistry of sulfur in source rocks and petroleum. Anders and Hite evaluate the current status of evaporite deposits as a source for crude oil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prepared by the collaborative effort of two somewhat separate technical groups: the researchers at the Institute for Petroleum and Organic Geochemistry, Forschungszentrum Jii lich (KFA), and the technical staff of Integrated Exploration Systems (IES). One of us, Donald R. Baker, from Rice University, Houston, has spent so much time at KFA as a guest scientist and researcher that it is most appropriate for him to contribute to the book. During its more than 20-year history the KFA group has made numerous and significant contributions to the understanding of petroleum evolution. The KFA researchers have emphasized both the field and laboratory approaches to such important problems as source rock recognition and evaluation, oil and gas generation, maturation of organic matter, expulsion and migration of hydrocarbons, and crude oil composition and alteration. IES Jiilich has been a leader in the development and application of numerical simulation (basin modeling) procedures. The cooperation between the two groups has resulted in a very fruitful synergy effect both in the development of modeling software and in its application. The purpose of the present volume developed out of the 1994 publication by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists of a collection of individually authored papers entitled The Petroleum System - From Source to Trap, edited by L. B. Magoon and W. G. Dow.
