Democratic institutions are frequently designed by the outgoing authoritarian regime to shield incumbent elites from the rule of law and give them an unfair advantage over politics and the economy after democratization. Authoritarianism and the Elite Origins of Democracy systematically documents and analyzes the constitutional tools that outgoing authoritarian elites use to accomplish these ends, such as electoral system design, legislative appointments, federalism, legal immunities, constitutional tribunal design, and supermajority thresholds for change. The study provides wide-ranging evidence for these claims using data that spans the globe and dates from 1800 to the present. In doing so, they explain why some democracies successfully overhaul their elite-biased constitutions for more egalitarian social contracts.

Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.

Book excerpt: Joseph Le Conte (February 26, 1823 - July 6, 1901) was born in Liberty County, Georgia. He received an M.D. degree from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1845. After four years of practicing medicine, he entered Harvard University and studied natural history under Louis Agassiz. After graduating from Harvard, he taught at Oglethorpe University, Franklin College and South Carolina College. In 1869, Le Conte moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he remained the rest of his life, teaching mainly in geology. In 1870 he visited Yosemite Valley and became friends with John Muir. Concerned about resource exploitation, Le Conte and Muir with others founded the Sierra Club in 1892. Le Conte died while visiting Yosemite Valley. Le Conte and his wife Caroline Nisbet, had four children.
