Book excerpt: Involuntary Confessions of the Flesh in Early Modern France is an interdisciplinary study of moments in which the early modern body loses control of its surface. Rather than read these moments as forerunners to the Freudian slip, it suggests that these moments are vital players in shaping various early modern discourses. This book pairs literary texts with religious, legal, and courtly documents in order to highlight the urgency and messiness of the relationships between body, self, and text.

Book excerpt: Wall-mounted memorials (or ‘epitaphs’) enjoyed great popularity across the Burgundian Netherlands. Usually installed in churches above graves, they combine images with inscriptions and take the form of sculpted reliefs, brass plaques, or panel paintings. They preserved the memory of the dead and reminded the living to pray for their souls. On occasions, renowned artists like Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden were closely involved in memorials’ creation. In Pious Memories Douglas Brine examines the wall-mounted memorial as a distinct category of funerary monument and shows it to be a significant, if overlooked, aspect of fifteenth-century Netherlandish art. The patronage, functions, and meanings of these objects are considered in the context of contemporary commemorative practices and the culture of memoria. Brine received the 2015 Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize, for an earlier version of Chapter 5 of Pious Memories, his article, “Jan van Eyck, Canon Joris van der Paele, and the Art of Commemoration,” published in the September 2014 issue of The Art Bulletin.

Rather, it is an attempt to bring together and systematize the major body of scholarship, including greater and lesser contributions. It is an annotated, not a critical bibliography, and while no capsular form can do justice to a scholarly work, it is hoped that the reader can decide on the basis of the annotation whether or not the work is of interest or is relevant to their research.

Book excerpt: The religious upheavals of the early modern period and the fierce debate they unleashed about true devotion gave conversion an unprecedented urgency. With their rich variety of emotive, aesthetic and rhetoric means of expression, literature and the visual arts proved particularly well-adapted means to address, explore and represent the complex nature of conversion. At the same time, many artists and authors experimented with the notion that the expressive character of their work could cultivate a sensory experience for the viewer that enacted conversion. Indeed, focusing on conversion as one of early modern Europe’s most pressing religious issues, this volume demonstrates that conversion cannot be separated from the creative and spiritual ways in which it was given meaning. Contributors include Mathilde Bernard, John R. Decker, Xander van Eck, Shulamit Furstenberg-Levi, Lise Gosseye, Chloë Houston, Philip Major, Walter Melion, Bart Ramakers, E. Natalie Rothman, Alison Searle, Lieke Stelling, Jayme Yeo, and Federico Zuliani.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study guide offering in-depth explanation, essay, and test prep for Emile Zola’s Germinal, a classic piece of literature due to its historically factual description of the class differentiation in France during the 1800s. As a nineteenth century fictional documentation of France, Germinal describes the impact of class differentiation on a striking coal miner’s family. Moreover, it outlines and highlights the mistreatment of the lower class and how they were forced into poverty by their superiors through the example of the miners. This Bright Notes Study Guide explores the context and history of Zola’s classic work, helping students to thoroughly explore the reasons it has stood the literary test of time. Each Bright Notes Study Guide contains: - Introductions to the Author and the Work - Character Summaries - Plot Guides - Section and Chapter Overviews - Test Essay and Study Q&As The Bright Notes Study Guide series offers an in-depth tour of more than 275 classic works of literature, exploring characters, critical commentary, historical background, plots, and themes. This set of study guides encourages readers to dig deeper in their understanding by including essay questions and answers as well as topics for further research.
