Book excerpt: The Christian church hides a multitude of secrets; it is, after all, a mysterious religion. For instance, what if Jesus did not start Christianity? What if Paul, who knew Jesus only through visions, created it? In Cover-Up, author and lay minister Lawrence Goudge disputes the Christian theology that has dominated the world for millennia. G oudge, who has spent more than twenty-four years researching the suppressed history of Jesus's Jewish followers, demonstrates how the church has corrupted Jesus's message. Cover-Up takes an innovative and investigative approach to Christianity, St. Paul's credibility, and ways in which theological truths have been concealed for two thousand years. Goudge's analysis debunks the myths and provides alternative theories. A s hatred and heresy haunt Christianity's shadows, this study addresses the intolerant nature of the Christian church and sets out to right the wrongs by bringing the truth about the Nazarenes into the light of day. Goudge's message presents hope for a just world.

Book excerpt: Peter's rooftop vision is a popular proof text used to discourage followers of Messiah Yeshua from obeying the Bible's dietary laws that prohibit certain meats, such as bacon, that God has declared to be unclean. Peter was a zealous figure who, at times, misunderstood Yeshua's evangelistic mission and missed the bigger picture. To improve his spiritual view, Peter was given a weighty intervention in the form of a vision. Many who shake their heads sagely as they read of Peter's mistakes might themselves be misunderstanding Yeshua's mission, partly by misunderstanding Peter's vision. In the end, Peter did interpret his vision correctly, though his words have become lost in a modern narrative that replaces Peter's report of the meaning of his vision . This booklet examines Peter's vision in the proper linguistic, historical, and Word-based context for accurate study and understanding. The result is the Good News taking deeper root in our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Luke intend Peter's visionary command to eat 'unclean animals' in Acts 10 to suggest the dissolution of the Jewish Law? Whilst scholars have argued over sources, inconsistent redaction and later reception, many have failed to notice here the novel use of a type of transgression anxiety dream. John Moxon shows how by the incorporation of such naturalistic motifs, Luke takes "revelation" in a new and decidedly psychological direction, probably imitating similar developments in Graeco-Roman biography. If the vision reveals an illegitimate transfer of disgust within an exaggerated halakha of separation, then its target is prejudice and inconsistency, not the Jew-Gentile divide as such, as underlined by the ironic contrast with the pious Cornelius. In this reading, Luke's non-supercessionism is maintained, whilst showing him acutely aware of the kinds of nightmare holding many back from the nascent Gentile mission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall 2015 The Christian Community Comes Alive This fall, DAILY BIBLE STUDY presents a series of readings following the theme “The Christian Community Comes Alive.” Readings come primarily from the Book of Acts and focus on the beginnings of the Christian church; the boldness with which Jesus’ followers testified to their faith; and the ways the gospel spread among the Jews and then the Gentiles. These daily readings, which prepare us for the 13 lessons in ADULT BIBLE STUDIES, are written by Bill Carter, Katie Shockley, and Lee Franklin. Seeds of New Growth Daily readings in this four-week unit recall how the early Christians supported one another through prayer, how they lived generously and shared all things, ways they witnessed to the truth, and how they remembered God’s faithfulness. Giving Bold Testimony Daily readings in this four-week unit follow the members of the early church as God’s Spirit worked in and through them, enabling them to stand firm, follow God’s way, take risks to share the gospel, and trust the Spirit to equip them to do the work God called them to do. Spreading the Gospel Daily readings in this five-week unit explore the role of prayer in the spread of the gospel, the abundant grace of God that makes salvation available to all with no distinctions, the cost of following Christ, the majesty and goodness of God, and the wisdom of living based on teachings from God’s Word For individual reading This daily devotional Bible study guide helps individuals develop the discipline of engaging with the Bible every day. Bible-based, Christ-focused, and United Methodist-approved, the daily readings support and lead up to the weekly lessons in Adult Bible Studies. Each one-page daily reading includes: A focal Scripture. An introductory reflection question. Commentary on the biblical text. Life application. A concluding prayer. Coming for next quarter! DAILY BIBLE STUDY is also available as a mobile app! The DAILY BIBLE STUDY mobile app helps individuals on the go develop the discipline of engaging with and applying the teachings of the Bible to their lives. Book excerpt: First Peter provides Christians with hope for the future of humanity as Christianity left its Jerusalem "nest" with Christ's mission for the world. It provides a message of hope in the face of struggle and suffering as Christianity first undermines the paganism of Roman culture in order to provide the foundation for Christian culture. The transition, said Peter, will be difficult-but rewarding. Second Peter continues this same theme, but acknowledges that the tran-sition process may be more difficult than first expected because there were false teachers who had successfully entered the ranks of the church, and were actively working to destroy God's plan of salvation in Christ. Indeed, the unfolding of God's plan for the salvation of humanity has taken much longer than any of the biblical writers first thought, though it has not surprised God in the least. Nonetheless, said Peter, stay true to Christ because the process of His progressive revelation in history will continue to provide true guidance. ..".full of remarkable insight, practical application, and rich content. Prepare to have your faith strengthened and your life transformed through Biblical truth." -Thomas E. Hendershot

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the theme of the missional conversion of the church, namely how the church is transformed toward its missionary vocation, from a biblical-theological perspective. The purpose of this book is to find biblically grounded, theologically sound, and practically applicable principles helpful for the church which seeks to be continuously shaped into a missional community which authentically and fully participates in God’s mission today. The biblical-theological findings on how the triune God in the biblical narrative shapes the people of God toward their missionary vocation demonstrates, first, that, in Scripture, the missional conversion of the church is primarily the consequence of its continuous encounter with the triune God, and, second, that this divine-human encounter for the missional conversion of the church is ineluctable in view of the ongoing tension between the missional faithfulness of God in fulfilling the missionary vocation of the church, on the one hand, and the missional failure of the church in its missionary vocation, on the other hand.
