Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Sailly (1754-1826) A Pioneer of the Champlain Valley: With Extracts From His Diary and Letters The purpose of these pages is to sketch the life of an interesting Frenchman, Peter Sailly, who for four decades was a striking and influential figure in the pioneer life of northern New York. The appending of his short diary makes available for reference a record of early journeyings in the Champlain and Mohawk valleys. A few letters, his own and by other persons important in the life of the State a hundred years and more ago, are also added. It is hoped that the history of a part of New York State which is not rich in authentic historical publications relating to the formative years, 1780 - 1825, may thus be somewhat illuminated and that incidentally a recognition, delayed but abundantly deserved, may be recorded of the substantial debt which New York and the new nation owe to a considerable number of French immigrants of condition and character who were attracted to the United States between 1780 and 1800, first by prospect of an alluring political and commercial status to follow their newly gained independence and later as a refuge from danger and distress at home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the history of the Mohawk Valley has been shaped by the complex relationships among the valley’s native inhabitants, the Mohawk Indians, and its colonists, starting with the Dutch. In Mohawk Country collects for the first time the principal documentary narratives that reveal the full scope of this Mohawk-settler interaction. Some of the sources have never before been translated into English, and several have not been previously published. Of those works that had been published, nearly all are out of print. The Mohawk location near Albany, New York put them at the center of transactions between the Iroquois and European colonists. (The Mohawk were one of the constituent nations within the League of the Iroquois.) These narratives-written by Dutch merchants, French Jesuit missionaries, English soldiers, romantic European travelers, and other literate observers-provide often biased but always fascinating accounts of the Mohawk and their valley. The reader is treated to over two centuries of history, starting with the arrival of the Dutch in the early seventeenth century to the planning of the Erie Canal in the early nineteenth century. These records bring to life the rapid changes experienced by both the Mohawk and their European neighbors. Wars, catastrophic epidemics, and the diplomacy of nearly two centuries are all well represented in this volume. Fascinating cultural differences are also unearthed: the French, for example, dealt with the Mohawk much differently than the Dutch or the English. Just as importantly, these writings reveal—from the unique perspectives of the observer—the Mohawk’s struggle to retain their culture in the midst of evolving political, social, and physical environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Roosevelt and Churchill recognized the importance of the land and naval battles of Plattsburgh. Many other, more famous, engagements were ruses meant to divert U.S. troops away from the prize Plattsburgh would afford: a clear pathway into New England. If not for the exemplary skills of two young military officers, Commodore Macdonough and General Macomb, and the force they commanded, regular army and naval personnel, New York and Vermont Militia, Native Americans, Veteran Exempts and boys from the local school, the war and the nation would have been lost. Using original source documents, author Keith Herkalo retells the battles at Plattsburgh, the key battles of the War of 1812.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of New Netherland reads like a small anthology on the discovery, origins, and history of the United States, but from a Dutch, rather than traditional English, perspective. A collection of excerpts from works spanning the years 1609 to 1664, a historical picture is painted through books, letters, journal entries, and commentaries. Works focus on Henry Hudson's voyage across the Atlantic and down the Hudson River, as well as on settlers' experiences in the New World. Readers with an interest in American History will be reminded of similar stories from English settlers first experiencing the east coast. John Franklin Jameson was born in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1859. He attended Amherst College, where he graduated valedictorian and studied with several influential historians, as well as John Hopkins University, where he received the first doctorate ever awarded in the field of history in 1882. Jameson went on to become a history teacher, author, journalist and editor. He was the first professional historian to become president of the AHA, and had much influence on historians in the early 20th century. In 1928, he became the head of the Division of Manuscripts at the Library of Congress. Jameson died in 1937.
