Book excerpt: Deep in the woods of Maine, the Revolutionary War is still fresh in settlers' minds as a young man named Peter Loon sets off at his mother's urging to find a mysterious person. Peter, who has never been away from his home, quickly falls into a series of startling entanglements. He befriends a nomadic parson with a seafaring past and whose humble intelligence and steady head prove useful, especially when the two find themselves in the middle of a bitter land battle. Crisscrossing between the two sides, Peter and Parson Leach tread the razor-thin line between law and justice. With the inimitable storytelling, exquisitely etched characters, and gentle humor that make Reid such a master, Peter Loon is a breathtaking tale of high adventure and great humility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Alexander Schmemann and Joseph Ratzinger insist that the human person remains shrouded in mystery without God's self-disclosure in the person of Jesus Christ. Like us, Jesus lived in a particular time and location, and therefore time and temporality must be part of the ontological question of what it means to be a human person. Yet, Jesus, the one who has time for us, ascended to the Father, and the bride of Christ awaits his return, and therefore time and temporality are conditioned by the eschatological. With this in mind, the ontological question of personhood and temporality is a question that concerns eschatology: how does eschatology shape personhood? Bringing together Schmemann and Ratzinger in a theological dialogue for the first time, this book explores their respective approaches and answers to the aforementioned question. While the two theologians share much in common, it is only Ratzinger's relational ontological approach that, by being consistently relational from top to bottom, consistently preserves the meaningfulness of temporal existence.

Book excerpt: Conga Blues, is a collection of poetry that explores cultural identity, personal identity and social identity. Migrating to the United States and growing up in New York City, I often questioned my cultural identity as a Puerto Rican. I struggled to find my own personal identity, my purpose in life. My social identity was intertwined with the social uproars of the late 60s and the early 70s. Conga Blues, is a collection of this search.

Download or read book Mollie Peer written by Van Reid and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once again, Van Reid enthralls with a story filled with wonderment, romance, and old-fashioned adventure, from the catacomb-like underground of the Portland waterfront to a perilous night pursuit on the October coast. During the autumn of 1896 in Portland, Maine, feisty society columnist Mollie Peer believes that a little ragamuffin boy, known only as Bird, is merely the subject of a story that will propel her to the level of a true reporter. Instead, the chain of events she sets in motion, and the heroic people she comes to know, lead her to better understand her own valor and compassion as she follows the boy into the dark world of the nightrunners. She is joined in her pursuit of these shadowy figures by the hapless, yet loveable members of the Moosepath League. This is an entertaining novel about the triumph of simply kindness
Download or read book New York written by Kenneth Scott and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although a goodly portion of the Albany County census of 1790 was burned in a 1911 fire, about half of the names for Albany County (just under 4,000) did survive. Professor Scott's compilation is a transcription of the rescued portion of the Albany County census and gives, first, the name of the head of household as it appears in the state census and, immediately after it, in brackets, the reading in the federal census-an arrangement of uncommon advantage to the genealogist.

Book Synopsis Peter Lax, Mathematician by : Reuben Hersh
Download or read book Peter Lax, Mathematician written by Reuben Hersh and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of one of the most famous and influential living mathematicians, Peter Lax. He is virtually unique as a preeminent leader in both pure and applied mathematics, fields which are often seen as competing and incompatible. Although he has been an academic for all of his adult life, his biography is not without drama and tragedy. Lax and his family barely escaped to the U.S. from Budapest before the Holocaust descended. He was one of the youngest scientists to work on the Manhattan Project. He played a leading role in coping with the infamous "kidnapping" of the NYU mathematics department's computer, in 1970. The list of topics in which Lax made fundamental and long-lasting contributions is remarkable: scattering theory, solitons, shock waves, and even classical analysis, to name a few. His work has been honored many times, including the Abel Prize in 2005. The book concludes with an account of his most important mathematical contributions, made accessible without heavy prerequisites. Reuben Hersh has written extensively on mathematics. His book with Philip Davis, The Mathematical Experience, won the National Book Award in science. Hersh is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of New Mexico.
