Book excerpt: This classic German children's tale of imaginative fantasy and adventure tells the story of how Peter and Anneli help Mr. Zoomzeman, a June Bug, bring his leg back from the Moon. Long ago, a thief--stealing wood in the forest--had accidentally cut off Mr. Zoomzeman's great-great grandfather's leg and was banished to the Moon. Unfortunately, he took the leg with him and, since then, the family of the Zoomzemans have all had only five legs. Only "two good children" can get the leg back, so Mr. Zoomzeman, in search of goodness, finds Peter and Anneli. The three set off together on an astonishing journey filled with marvelous encounters, fantastic beings, and exciting events. Finally, reaching the Moon, they must challenge the ferocious Moon Man and, with the help of the Nature Forces, they restore the missing leg to Mr. Zoomzeman.

Book excerpt: Encyclopedic in its coverage, this one-of-a-kind reference is ideal for students, scholars, and others who need reliable, up-to-date information on folk and fairy tales, past and present. Folktales and fairy tales have long played an important role in cultures around the world. They pass customs and lore from generation to generation, provide insights into the peoples who created them, and offer inspiration to creative artists working in media that now include television, film, manga, photography, and computer games. This second, expanded edition of an award-winning reference will help students and teachers as well as storytellers, writers, and creative artists delve into this enchanting world and keep pace with its past and its many new facets. Alphabetically organized and global in scope, the work is the only multivolume reference in English to offer encyclopedic coverage of this subject matter. The four-volume collection covers national, cultural, regional, and linguistic traditions from around the world as well as motifs, themes, characters, and tale types. Writers and illustrators are included as are filmmakers and composers—and, of course, the tales themselves. The expert entries within volumes 1 through 3 are based on the latest research and developments while the contents of volume 4 comprises tales and texts. While most books either present readers with tales from certain countries or cultures or with thematic entries, this encyclopedia stands alone in that it does both, making it a truly unique, one-stop resource.

Book excerpt: It's important that we reflect upon and celebrate our experiences, to learn from them and to push for more small steps and giant leaps. "One Small Step" commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and all of those individuals who helped make it a success. It inspires us to keep dreaming and reaching while saluting the mission and those who made it happen. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and that it will rouse you to take at least one small step of your own. The most significant event of our time and the start of hundreds of Space expeditions for mankind, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's journey to the moon and back. With amazing images of the event supplied by NASA and an introduction from astronaut Buzz Aldrin we hope you'll agree this book is an amazing resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a fresh assessment of the pioneering practices of theatre directors Jerzy Grotowski, Peter Brook and Eugenio Barba, whose work has challenged and extended ideas about what theatre is and does. Contributors demonstrate how each was instrumental in rethinking and reinventing theatre's possibilities: where it takes place – whether in theatres or beyond – and who the audience might then be, as well as how actors train and perform, highlighting the importance of the group and collaboration. The volume examines their role in establishing intercultural dialogues and practices, and the wider influence of this work on theatre. Consideration is also given to each director's documentation of their practice in print and film and the influence this has had on 21st-century performance.

Book excerpt: The title is purposefully ironic. The Moon does not change, but our understanding of it does. The people and mission of Apollo 16 teach us a great deal about our celestial neighbor. After accomplishing President Kennedy's challenge of a lunar landing, NASA places more emphasis on science. John Young, Ken Mattingly, and Charlie Duke are assigned to Apollo 16, the first mission to a mountainous region. Exploration of the lunar highlands is vital for answering long-lasting questions about the Moon. Mechanical issues jeopardize the mission less than an hour before the scheduled landing. Are years of training for naught, or rewarded by rich discovery? Enjoy the ambition, humor, and skill of astronauts and engineers as they seek to advance our knowledge of the Moon through the 1972 mission of Apollo 16."Extremely well written. There's nothing out there like this. Very detailed, very well researched." - Jerry Bostick, Flight Controller, Chief of the Flight Dynamics Branch"It sure was wonderful to remember such details of the Apollo missions. You did a great job in conveying the excitement of those years to today's readers. Your writing will excite many young minds."- Farouk El-Baz, Trainer of Apollo astronauts in geology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinity without men. In Female Masculinity Judith Halberstam takes aim at the protected status of male masculinity and shows that female masculinity has offered a distinct alternative to it for well over two hundred years. Providing the first full-length study on this subject, Halberstam catalogs the diversity of gender expressions among masculine women from nineteenth-century pre-lesbian practices to contemporary drag king performances. Through detailed textual readings as well as empirical research, Halberstam uncovers a hidden history of female masculinities while arguing for a more nuanced understanding of gender categories that would incorporate rather than pathologize them. She rereads Anne Lister's diaries and Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness as foundational assertions of female masculine identity. She considers the enigma of the stone butch and the politics surrounding butch/femme roles within lesbian communities. She also explores issues of transsexuality among "transgender dykes"--lesbians who pass as men--and female-to-male transsexuals who may find the label of "lesbian" a temporary refuge. Halberstam also tackles such topics as women and boxing, butches in Hollywood and independent cinema, and the phenomenon of male impersonators. Female Masculinity signals a new understanding of masculine behaviors and identities, and a new direction in interdisciplinary queer scholarship. Illustrated with nearly forty photographs, including portraits, film stills, and drag king performance shots, this book provides an extensive record of the wide range of female masculinities. And as Halberstam clearly demonstrates, female masculinity is not some bad imitation of virility, but a lively and dramatic staging of hybrid and minority genders.
