Book excerpt: "The criminal class is a more exact cross-section of humanity than any trade could be." –Luc Sante, interview by The Believer Weed, coke, heroin, molly, promethazine, crack, PCP, LCD, opium, hashish, mushrooms, and countless other illicit substances flood the streets of New York City where they are consumed as quickly as they can be delivered. The War on Drugs may have been declared in 1971, but the numbers are in and the government’s $1.5 trillion war has done little to nothing to kink the flow of drugs in America. In New York City the NYPD has even instated a Stop and Frisk policy that, since its 2002 inception, has resulted in millions of New Yorkers being unconstitutionally stopped and searched. This controversial policy has heightened the danger for the city’s intrepid drug dealers, who brave all weather and police-profiling to meet their customers' insatiable desires. Add on the constant threat of violence and robbery, and it is arguably the most high-risk yet lucrative time to be a NYC dealer. Demand never ceases to grow, and where there is demand, there will always be plenty of outlaw capitalists willing to step up and supply. For Dealers, street reporter Peter Madsen set out across New York City—from staid Gramercy residences to bleak homeless hangouts; grimy Bushwick bike messenger bars and tony Park Avenue penthouses—to interview this particular criminal class. Through anonymous one-on-one interviews with an alarmingly wide host of subjects (including a transient heroin-addict supporting his habit, cute art-school girls running a weed lounge, a connection-ready concierge, fixed-gear weed couriers, stick-up kids, and a couple lawyers who deal on the side), Madsen extracts un-glamorized, sometimes hilarious, and always nuanced accounts of the navigators of New York City's expansive drug underworld.

Book excerpt: I want to set the record straight. Everything you’ve heard about my stepmother is wrong. Okay, she did have a magic mirror of sorts, but that is about the only truth in the tale you’ve heard. For a start, she wasn’t my stepmother, she was my mother. The victors write the history, or at least the ones with the pen do. My mother gets a bad rap because she stood up to some powerful people and those people were the ones who got to dictate the ‘truth.’ The story you’ve heard, or read, tells of a woman twisted by vanity who couldn’t stand that her stepdaughter was more beautiful than she was. Such utter crap. Only a man could write something so asinine. I’m pretty sure that men purposely pit women against women so that we can never unite because every man knows if women could come together, they wouldn’t stand a chance against us…but I digress. According to the ‘history’, my stepmother—mother—was so jealous of me that she commanded a huntsman to take me into the woods and kill me. Apparently, my stepmother wanted to eat my heart so she could become immortal—insert eye roll here. Of course the valiant man did not kill me—insert another eye roll here—but rather helped me to escape my evil stepmother’s clutches. If you haven’t guessed already, I’m not exactly happy with the way things have turned out. Let’s not forget about the multiple attempts to kill me—all blamed on my mother, of course—or the fact that a complete stranger stole my body while I was in a coma…yeah, we’ll get to that. This entire story has been nothing but propaganda. A blatant attempt by a neighbouring king to marry me off to his son, take over my homeland, and dethrone my mother. Well, I’ve had enough. I’m writing this down to document the truth. This is truth as I experienced it…the real truth. This is the full and unabridged tale of my own life. Me, Snow White, the Poisoned Princess.

Cody has begun what promises to be an epic trilogy.” —Adam Gidwitz, New York Times bestselling author of A Tale Dark and Grimm It is said that in the thirteenth century, in a town called Hamelin, a piper lured all of the children away with his magical flute, and none of them were ever seen again. Today, tough, pink-haired Max and her little brother, Carter, are stuck in modern-day Hamelin with their father . . . until they are also led away by the Piper to a place called the Summer Isle. There they meet the original stolen children, who haven’t aged a day and who have formed their own town, vigilantly guarded from the many nightmarish beings that roam the land. No one knows why the Piper stole them, but Max and Carter may be the key to returning the lost children of Hamelin. Together they set out on the Peddler’s Road to find their way back to the real world. This swashbuckling journey is perfect for fans of Rump and A Tale Dark and Grimm. Don’t miss the second adventure in the series, The Magician’s Key!

Book excerpt: Peter Silverlos Livingston was born before World War II and would be considered a traditionalist in today’s jargon. There is an old saying, “You can take the kid out of Brooklyn but you can’t take Brooklyn out of the kid”. As a young kid growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Peter had the opportunity of being involved in many activities as a young boy. Brooklyn was the most populated of the five boroughs of New York City with over 3 million people of mostly European extraction including many other ethnic races from all over the world during World War II. New York City was and still is the biggest city in the country. There were more combat troops from Brooklyn than any other area in the country. Over three thousand died in World War II. The average age of those who fought and died in WWII was 26 years old. Believe It or not, the average age of those who fought and died in Vietnam was 19 years old. Also, Marine casualties in Viet Nam totaled over 13 thousand. The Viet Nam war was one of the longest U.S. conflicts to date totaling ten years from 1965 to 1975, but the U.S. had advisors there for a number of years even before 1965. Over 58,000 U.S. troops died in Viet Nam and some are still Missing In Action (MIA’s) like the great track and field star Cliff Cushman. He was from the University of Kansas and was a silver medalist in the Olympics and a track buddy of Pete's. He flew an Air Force jet when he went missing. The Viet Nam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington D.C. is a long black slab marble wall dedicated to all the fallen warriors and those that served and fought in Viet Nam, including those who are still MIA. Each of the soldiers names are inscribed on it in chronological order based on the date they died and served. This honor has been bestowed on all these veterans who courageously fought in the Viet Nam war conflict as remembered by the United States which dedicated the building of this wall in their honor. The monument’s importance and significance is a symbol for all peoples in the United States and future generations to remember the sacrifice these veterans undertook regarding this conflict.
