Book excerpt: Fueled by falling display hardware costs and rising demand, digital signage and pervasive displays are becoming ever more ubiquitous. Such systems have traditionally been used for advertising and information dissemination, with digital signage commonplace in shopping malls, airports and public spaces. While advertising and broadcasting announcements remain important applications, developments in sensing and interaction technologies are enabling entirely new classes of display applications that tailor content to the situation and audience of the display. As a result, signage systems are beginning to transition from simple broadcast systems to rich platforms for communication and interaction. In this lecture, we provide an introduction to this emerging field for researchers and practitioners interested in creating state-of-the-art pervasive display systems. We begin by describing the history of pervasive display research, providing illustrations of key systems, from pioneering work on supporting collaboration to contemporary systems designed for personalized information delivery. We then consider what the near future might hold for display networks -- describing a series of compelling applications that are being postulated for future display networks. Creating such systems raises a wide range of challenges and requires designers to make a series of important trade-offs. We dedicate four chapters to key aspects of pervasive display design: audience engagement, display interaction, system software, and system evaluation. These chapters provide an overview of current thinking in each area. Finally, we present a series of case studies of display systems and our concluding remarks.

More and more of these public displays are networked and equipped with sensors, making them part of a global infrastructure that is currently emerging. Such displays provide the opportunity to create a benefit for society in the form of immersive experiences and relevant content. In this way, they can overcome the display blindness that evolved over the years. Two main reasons prevent this vision from coming true: first, public displays are stuck with traditional advertising as the driving business model. Second, no common ground exists for researchers or advertisers that outline important challenges. The main contribution of this thesis is presenting a design space for advertising on public displays that identifies important challenges - mainly from an HCI perspective. The results are envisioned to provide a basis for future research and for practitioners to shape future advertisements on public displays in a positive way.

The year2008wasthesecondtimeinasmanyyearsthatthePervasiveconferencehas attempted to “globalize”: For the second year in a row the conference was held outside of Europe. The conference is seen as one of the most respected venues for publishing researchon pervasive and ubiquitous computing and captures the state of the art in pervasive computing research. In 2008, as in previous years, the proceedings present solutions for challenging research problems and help to identify upcoming research opportunities. Pervasive 2008 attracted 114 high-quality submissions, from which the Te- nical Program Committee accepted 18 papers, resulting in a competitive 15. 8% acceptance rate. There were over 335 individual authors from 27 countries,c- ing from a wide range of disciplines and from both academic and industrial organizations. Papers were selected solely on the quality of their peer reviews using a double-blind review process. The review process was carried out by 38 members of the international Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC) who are - perts of international standing. The TPC members were aided by 104 external reviewers. It wasa rigorousreviewprocess,in whicheachpaper had atleastfour reviews: three reviews provided by by the Committee members and one review written by an external reviewer. The reviews were followed by a substantive - liberation on each paper during an electronic discussion phase before the start of the Committee meeting.

Relevant design research is discussed and framed in a story and value based participatory approach. Sustainability is the most important design goal. This is the first message. A second message is that information technologies, and in particular pervasive computing are invaluable keys in the quest for sustainability. Thirdly there is a lack of knowledge on sustainability issues in the interaction design community. In this book a unique meta-level framework structures an extensive discussion of design for sustainability. The framework is based on a principle of justice that is complemented by circumstances for sustainability chosen from the perspective of interaction design. We suggest and present the following circumstances: limited shared resources, socio-technical components and structures, technology development, vision and reflection, cognitive and behavioural support, joint ventures and political action. Topics discussed within the circumstances include experience design, ethics, Latours’s modes of existence, design fiction, computer games, futures studies, theories for reflection and behavioural change, personal informatics, and practice theory. The convolute concludes with a number of case studies where interaction design research is summarized and studied from the perspective of sustainability. We start out with thoughts on sustainable consumption, sustainable character, and the sustainable family that gets a section each. Adding to them are annotated case studies from research on design fiction, game and performance, value based design, practice theory, multi-level perspective design and design for a sustainable society. The book is a polyphonic convolute which means that there will be some overlap in the reports from the different discourses. Development in the areas related to interaction design can be sensed by identifying the surfacing themes. In total the e-book consists of the equivalence of 530 pages excluding references and index. The vast majority of this data is likely to benefit us greatly—making our lives more convenient, efficient, and safer through custom-tailored and context-aware services that anticipate what we need, where we need it, and when we need it. But beneath all this convenience, efficiency, and safety lurks the risk of losing control and awareness of what is known about us in the many different contexts of our lives. Eventually, we may find ourselves in a situation where something we said or did will be misinterpreted and held against us, even if the activities were perfectly innocuous at the time. Even more concerning, privacy implications rarely manifest as an explicit, tangible harm. Instead, most privacy harms manifest as an absence of opportunity, which may go unnoticed even though it may substantially impact our lives. In this Synthesis Lecture, we dissect and discuss the privacy implications of mobile and pervasive computing technology. For this purpose, we not only look at how mobile and pervasive computing technology affects our expectations of—and ability to enjoy—privacy, but also look at what constitutes ""privacy"" in the first place, and why we should care about maintaining it. We describe key characteristics of mobile and pervasive computing technology and how those characteristics lead to privacy implications. We discuss seven approaches that can help support end-user privacy in the design of mobile and pervasive computing technologies, and set forward six challenges that will need to be addressed by future research. The prime target audience of this lecture are researchers and practitioners working in mobile and pervasive computing who want to better understand and account for the nuanced privacy implications of the technologies they are creating. Those new to either mobile and pervasive computing or privacy may also benefit from reading this book to gain an overview and deeper understanding of this highly interdisciplinary and dynamic field.

A range of information from sensing and reas- ing technologies is used by distributed devices in the environment. The cooperation between natural user interfaces and sensor interfaces covers all of a person’s s- roundings, resulting in a device environment that behaves intelligently; the term “Ambient Intelligence” has been coined to describe it. In this way, the environment is able to recognize the persons in it, to identify their individual needs, to learn from their behavior, and to act and react in their interest. Since this vision is influenced by a lot of different concepts in information proce- ing and combines multi-disciplinary fields in electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design, user interfaces, and cognitive sciences, considerable research is needed to provide new models of technological innovation within a multi-dimensional society. Thus the AmI vision relies on the large-scale integration of electronics into the environment, enabling the actors, i.e., people and objects, to interact with their surrounding in a seamless, trustworthy, and natural manner.
