Book excerpt: Louis Althusser’s interpretation of Niccolò Machiavelli has never really been studied in any detail as an analysis of political action and intervention. The same is also true for Althusser’s notion of aleatory materialism. Instead, these have conventionally been studied from the viewpoint of a philosophical perspective in which politics is excluded. The objective of the present book thus runs against many of the prevailing views on Althusser. Here the emphasis is placed on Althusser's advancement of a theory of materialist politics. The main argument put forward is that, for Althusser, it was essential to reflect on how the conjunctural understanding of history and reality could offer a theoretical starting point for a subversive political strategy.

Each chapter sets out the major positions and debates that surround the texts of key thinkers, analyzes major problems of interpreting them, examines the sources of disagreement, and evaluates the different interpretations in terms of their strengths, weaknesses and contributions to scholarship.

Book excerpt: "This book attempts to answer the question "what on earth is the Marxist political philosophy?" The author discusses Karl Marx's vision of the good life and the good society, focusing in particular on the interrelationship between property and justice. Strictly speaking, the subject of the present book should not be placed within an a priori conceptual framework, which essentially focuses on academic notions of the good society, good government and justice. However, for the purposes of this book, Marxist political philosophy, namely communism, is already embodied in two aspects. This book argues that it is the noisy and confusing modern political philosophy that obscures the actualisation of human nature unfolded by the Marxist political philosophy before us. The book will be essential reading for students and scholars of philosophy, Marxism, Chinese studies and Chinese Marxist philosophy"--

Order may rest upon popular affirmation of conventional morality, but it also depends upon the resourcefulness of politicians in circumventing these moral standards. Hobbes and the Politics of Fear - For the rational citizen, public order is not simply the highest political priority; if political stability is to be attained it must be the only political priority. For the only meaningful political right is the right to live. Locke and the Politics of Rights - To be secure, public authority must be based upon needs self evident to any rational person. Politics must not be concerned with our highest ideals, but only with interests we all have in common.

Book excerpt: Interest in the study of Marx’s thought has shown a revival in recent years, with a number of newly established academic societies, conferences, and journals dedicated to discussing his thought. This book brings together distinguished and up-and-coming scholars to provide a major re-evaluation of historical issues in Marx scholarship and to connect Marx’s ideas with fresh debates in contemporary Anglo-American social and political philosophy. Among the topics discussed are Marx’s relationship to his philosophical predecessors—including Hegel, the young Hegelians, and the utopian socialists—his concept of recognition, his critique of liberalism, and his views on the good life. This book will be of interest to scholars and advanced students interested in Marx, Hegel, the history of political thought, and social and political philosophy.

Book excerpt: In The Radical Machiavelli: Politics, Philosophy and Language, some of the finest Machiavellian scholars explore the Florentine’s thought five hundred years after the composition of his masterpiece, The Prince. Their analysis, however, goes past The Prince, extending to Machiavelli’s entire corpus and shining new light on his political, historical, and military works, with a special focus on their heritage in modern Marxist thought, the arena in which they reverberate most profoundly and originally. Rather than a neutral, comprehensive, and safe interpretation, this book offers a partial and even partisan reading of Machiavelli, the 16th-century thinker who continues to divide scholars and interpreters, forcing them to confront their responsibility as contemporary thinkers in a global society where Machiavelli's ideas and the issues they address still matter. Contributors are: Etienne Balibar, Banu Bargu, Jérémie Barthas, Thomas Berns, Alison Brown, Filippo Del Lucchese, Romain Descendre, Jean-Louis Fournel, Fabio Frosini, Giorgio Inglese, Mikko Lahtinen, Jacques Lezra, John P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "Machiavelli: The Prince" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Prince is a political treatise by the Florentine philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, written c. 1513. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Machiavelli dedicated The Prince to the ruling Medici of the time, leading some today to still speculate whether the book was a satire. Niccolò Machiavelli asserted that The Prince (president, dictator, prime minister, etc.) does not have to be concerned with ethics, as long as their motivation is to protect the state. It is this questionable belief that in many ways had lead to the modern world as we know it. His assertion was that the head of state must protect the state no matter the cost and no matter what rules he or she breaks in the process.
