Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1983 Cargese Summer Institute on Particles and Fields was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M. LEVY and J.-L. BASDEVANT), C.E.R.N. (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholique de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (R. GASTMANS). After 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1981, it was the fifth time they joined their efforts for organizing this Summer Insti tute. This school was characterized by simultaneous progress in the theory of elementary particles and by impressive experimental advances. On the theoretical front, one witnessed the new developments in lattice gauge theories, which explore the world of strongly interacting par ticles in a non-perturbative way, and progress in a better understan ding of the unity of all interactions based on supersymmetry. The experimentalists were ~roud to announce the discovery of the interme diate vector bosons; W- and ZO, at C.E.R.N., while physicists working with e+e- colliding beams continued to probe more deeply the validity of the theoretical models of strong, weak and electromagnetic inter actions. We owe many thanks to all those who have made this Summer Insti tute possible! Thanks are due to the Scientific Committee of NATO and its Presi dent for a generous grant and especially to the head of the Advanced Study Institute Program and his collaborators for their constant help and encouragement. BASDEVANT), CERN (M. JACOB), the Universite Catholique de Louvain (D. SPEISER and J. WEYERS), and the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven (R. GASTHANS), whieh, sinee 1975, have joined their efforts and worked in eommon. It was the 25th summer institute held at Cargese and the ninth one organized by the two institutes of theoretieal physics at Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve. The 1987 school was centered around two main themes: the re cent developments in string theory and the physics of high energy colliders. As the standard model of the fundamental interaetions has repeatedly proved to be suecessful in explaining the experimental findings in par tiele physies, more attention was given in this school to possible new features arising from string inspired models. This led us to inelude in the program aseries of lectures devoted to string theory per se. They eovered the more mathematical aspects of the theory as weIl as the phenomenological implications. The second theme concerns high energy collider physics and was meant to prepare young physicists for the future experimental results to be expected from the pp and e+e- colliders. It brought theorists and ex perimentalists actively together in their search for a better understand ing of the high energy phenomena.

Book excerpt: With the discovery of pulsars, quasars, and galactic X-ray sources in the late 60's and early 70's, and the coincident expansion in the search for gravitational waves, rela tivistic gravity assumed an important place in the astrophysics of localized objects. Only by pushing Einstein's solar-system-tested general theory of relativity to the study of the extremes of gravitational collapse and its outcomes did it seem that one could explain these frontier astronomical phenomena. This conclusion continues to be true today. Relativistic gravity had always played the central role in cosmology. The discov ery of the cosmic background radiation in 1965, the increasing understanding of matter physics at high energies in the decades following, and the growing wealth of observations on the large scale structure meant that it was possible to make increasingly detailed mod els of the universe, both today and far in the past. This development, not accidentally, was contemporary to that for localized objects described above.

The origin of this meeting goes back to 1982 when the organizers met at the GANIL laboratory in Caen, France which had just started accelerating argon ions at 44 MeV per nucleon. We then realized that 1984 should be the appropriate time to review the first results obtained with such new kinds of facilities. The material contained in this volume, presenting many beautiful re sults on nuclei at high excitation, fully confirms this point. Many stimulating exchanges between experts in rather diffe rent fields already took place during the school and we hope that this cross fertilization will lead to further developments. About half of the present volume is also devoted to the field of relativistic heavy ion collisions, which is now expanding rapidly. As an illustration, let us recall that the construction of a 30 on 30 GeV per nucleon collider at Brookhaven has been recognized last year as one cf the major priorities by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. We would like to express our gratitude to NATO for its ge nerous financial support which made this institute possible. The Institute was held at Centro "I Cappuccini" San Miniato, Tuscany, July 11-21, 1984. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students already engaged in the area of quantum electronics or for those wishing to switch into this area after working previously in other areas. From the outset, the School has been under the direction of Prof. F. T. Arecchi, then at the University of Pavia, now at the University of Florence, and Dr. D. Roess of Heraeus, Hanau. In 1981, Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich and Max-Planck Institut fur Quantenoptik joined as co-director. Book excerpt: The third Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Christiansted was the site of the first ASI, and it was certainly a delight to return there again. As in the previous ASI's, the aim was to bring together a small group of promising young experimenters and several outstanding senior scholars in experimental and theoretical high energy physics in order to learn about the latest developments in the field and to strengthen contacts among scientists from different countries and different backgrounds. The institute was both a great scientific and a great social success; much of this was due to the beautiful setting and to the dedication of the Hotel management of Ray Boudreau and Hurchell Greenaway and their excellent staff. The primary support for the meeting was once again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Found ation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contribution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the case of the previous ASI's, the scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics.

Book excerpt: Controlled thermonuclear fusion is one of the possible candidates for long term energy sources which will be indispensable for our highly technological society. However, the physics and technology of controlled fusion are extremely complex and still require a great deal of research and development before fusion can be a practical energy source. For producing energy via controlled fusion a deuterium-tritium gas has to be heated to temperatures of a few 100 Million °c corres ponding to about 10 keV. For net energy gain, this hot plasma has to be confined at a certain density for a certain time One pro mising scheme to confine such a plasma is the use of i~tense mag netic fields. However, the plasma diffuses out of the confining magnetic surfaces and impinges on the surrounding vessel walls which isolate the plasma from the surrounding air. Because of this plasma wall interaction, particles from the plasma are lost to the walls by implantation and are partially reemitted into the plasma. In addition, wall atoms are released and can enter the plasma. These wall atoms or impurities can deteriorate the plasma performance due to enhanced energy losses through radiation and an increase of the required magnetic pressure or a dilution of the fuel in the plasma. Finally, the impact of the plasma and energy on the wall can modify and deteriorate the thermal and mechanical pro perties of the vessel walls.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with recent experimental and theoretical work dealing with phenomena created by the transient dipoles and polarizabilities produced by intermolecular interactions. The for mer produce absorption from the microwave to the optical regions of the spectrum and the latter produce Rayleigh and Raman scattering; such absorption and scattering would be absent without collisions. Static properties, such as dielectric constant, refractive index, and Kerr effect, also exhibit the effects of induced dipoles and polarizabilities. The first observation of an infrared absorption spectrum pro duced by the collisions of molecules which ordinarily do not have an allowed dipole transition was reported in 1949 (Crawford, Welsh, and Locke). The first observation of depolarized Rayleigh spectra due to collisions in atomic gases appeared in 1968 (McTague and Birnbaum). However, it was not until 1977 that the first conference dealing with collision-induced phenomena was organized by J. D. Poll at the University of Guelph. This conference was mainly concerned with studies of collision-induced absorption in gases. Light scat tering received more attention at the second meeting of the colli sion-induced community in 1978, at the E. Fermi Summer School on "Intermolecular Spectroscopy and Dynamical Properties of Dense Sys tems," organized by J. Van Kranendonk. However, the emphasis was still on collision-induced absorption in compressed gases, although some work on liquids, solid H , and related subjects such as ro 2 tational relaxation was included.
