Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the prevalence of behavioral research conducted through genetic studies, there is an absence of literature pertaining to the genetics of motor behavior. Genetics and the Psychology of Motor Performance is the first book to integrate cutting-edge genetic research into the study of the psychological aspects of motor learning and control. The book’s central line of enquiry revolves around the extent to which psychological factors central to motor proficiency – including personality, emotion, self-regulation, motivation, and perceptual-cognitive skills – are acquired or inherited. It explains how these factors affect motor performance, distilling the latest research into their genetic underpinnings and, in doing so, assessing the magnitude of the role genetics plays in the stages of motor development, from early proficiency through to expertise. Written by leading experts in the genetics of human performance and exercise psychology, and thoroughly illustrated throughout, Genetics and the Psychology of Motor Performance is a crucial resource for any upper-level student or researcher seeking a deeper understanding of motor learning. It is an important book for anyone studying or working in exercise psychology, motor development, exercise genetics, or exercise physiology more broadly.

Book excerpt: Based upon a conference held in Bethesda in 1985, this volume brings together the research and theoretical perspectives of experts in the developmental aspects of motor control, coordination, and skill in the mentally handicapped. This is accomplished within the context of cognition. Section I deals with the dynamics of controlling movement skill and the nature of the variables that mediate the learning of motor skills. Sections II and III examine the traditional area of research in motor behavior, i.e., the speed of information processing and reaction time paradigms. The last section discusses the issue of training to minimize the effects of mental retardation on motor behavior.

Book Synopsis Individual Differences in Movement by : D.B. Kirkcaldy
Download or read book Individual Differences in Movement written by D.B. Kirkcaldy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to bridge the gap between differential psychology and human movement. It is curious that each discipline has received considerable attention in its own right but little effort has been made to cross-fertilize them. Some experimentalists view this union as the equivalent of committing academic adultery; they have tended to concentrate on general theories and models of motor control and movement, viewing individual differences as awkward and best assigned to the error variance component of an analysis. By neglecting person variables, valuable information is discarded: people do differ in terms of ability, attitude, motivation and temperament and it is hardly surprising that such differences interact with a variety of experimental and situational para digms. The causes and determinants of individual differences must be examined at an interdisciplinary level, incorporating studies from experimental, physio logical, clinical and educational psychology. This synthesis could not have been actualized by any single contributor. For this reason, a multi-authored approach has been adopted, in which 17 specialists have been assembled to present the current position of individual difference research in their respective disciplines. The authors were granted maximum freedom in their selection and present ation of material. What emerges is, hopefully, a novel and informative col lection of articles addressed to a wide audience and providing an impulse for further research.

It deals with the development of ability, maximization of performance in competition, emotional health, social adjustement and general well being of the participants in sport. The two main aims are firstly to select and outline ways in which young people can learn to become highly skilled and well adjusted sportsmen and secondly to describe the techniques by which players, having become highly skilled, can perform consistently well under pressure or stress. This book is based on tried and tested methods in teaching and on extensive research findings in the field of sport psychology. There is a strong bias towards the practical and most chapters contain specific guidelines to be followed and detailed practices to be undertaken, making it ideal as a practical text for teachers, coaches or as an aid to self-improvement in the competitor.
