Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... PRESIDENT LINCOLN, HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN LINCOLN was an unusually affectionate and indulgent father. A paragraph in a letter to his friend Speed shows that he and his wife had the experiences and emotions common to proud parents. We have another boy, born the 10th of March. He is very much such a child as Bob was at his age, rather of a longer order. Bob is " short and low," and I expect always will be. He talks very plainly -- almost as plainly as anybody. He is quite smart enough. I sometimes fear that he is one of the little rare-ripe sort that are smarter at about five than ever after. He has a great deal of that sort of mischief that is the offspring of such animal spirits. Since I began this letter, a messenger came to tell me Bob was lost; but by the time I reached the house his mother had found him and had him whipped, and by now, very likely, he is run away again. The second child died in infancy, but two others were born to them, both boys. Their father liked to have them with him, even when to others they appeared decidedly troublesome. If they swarmed too persistently over his person he brushed them away like gnats, but he never turned them out of the room or reproved them, except in the mildest manner. When they began to go to school he studied with them. One of his Springfield neighbors, recalling how constantly they were in his company, tells of being attracted to the door one day by hearing children cry. He saw Mr. Lincoln striding by with two of his sons, both wailing loudly. "Why, what is the matter with the boys?" he asked. "Just what is the matter with the whole world," was the answer. "I've got three walnuts, and each wants two." "Bob," the eldest, showed a grasp of principles and property rights in dealing with his...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln When my father began collecting material to be used in his joint work with John Hay, "Abraham Lincoln: A History," he put certain things into an envelope marked "Personal Traits," meaning to make a chapter with that heading. As the work grew the items gathered under that head overflowed from one envelope into many; and at the same time it became manifest that a chapter with such a title would be out of place. Incidents illustrating Mr. Lincoln's personal traits found their rightful place elsewhere; and the authors argued that if the work as a whole did not reflect his character, it was labor lost. Book excerpt: From Pulitzer Prize–winning author and esteemed presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, an invaluable guide to the development and exercise of leadership from Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The inspiration for the multipart HISTORY Channel series Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. “After five decades of magisterial output, Doris Kearns Goodwin leads the league of presidential historians” (USA TODAY). In her “inspiring” (The Christian Science Monitor) Leadership, Doris Kearns Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)—to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entries into public life, we encounter them at a time when their paths were filled with confusion, fear, and hope. Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to shatter forever their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged fitted to confront the contours and dilemmas of their times. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. At moments of great challenge, they were able to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? “If ever our nation needed a short course on presidential leadership, it is now” (The Seattle Times). This seminal work provides an accessible and essential road map for aspiring and established leaders in every field. In today’s polarized world, these stories of authentic leadership in times of apprehension and fracture take on a singular urgency. “Goodwin’s volume deserves much praise—it is insightful, readable, compelling: Her book arrives just in time” (The Boston Globe).

Book excerpt: In the climax of Richard Lawrence Miller's epic four-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln's pre-presidential years, a blunder by the proponents of slavery propels Lincoln toward the White House. Initially, passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act seems to be a victory for the South, opening the American West to slavery. Ultimately, however, the North rises in anger, with Lincoln helping to fan the flames of rage. Before the first shot of the Civil War is fired, the ambitious westerner is transformed, seeking more power yet, but wielding it in defense of the American dream. His dedication and dependability set him apart from his Republican competitors and help him secure his party's presidential nomination in 1860. With this installment, the most detailed and comprehensive biography of a pre-presidential Abraham Lincoln in the past 100 years comes to its conclusion.

James Conroy brings to life the people who knew it, from servants to cabinet secretaries. We see the constant stream of visitors, from ordinary citizens to visiting dignitaries and diplomats. Conroy enables the reader to see how the Lincolns lived and how the administration conducted day-to-day business during four of the most tumultuous years in American history. Relying on fresh research and a character-driven narrative and drawing on untapped primary sources, he takes the reader on a behind-the-scenes tour that provides new insight into how Lincoln lived, led the government, conducted war, and ultimately, unified the country to build a better government of, by, and for the people.

Preconceived myths about the former first lady are factually disproved. At times her judgment was faulty; in other instances it was brilliant. After her 1861 refurbishing of the Executive Mansion, she made no further furnishings purchases, only replacement items. The furniture she purchased is still in use and the Lincoln bed is well known. Committed to an insane asylum by her only surviving son, she organized, while under constant scrutiny, her friends in a skillfully successful scheme to obtain her freedom and resume control of her life and money. Mary Todd Lincoln had a brilliant mind, a caring heart and an exuberant personality and she was, in every aspect, a true partner to Abraham Lincoln.
