Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Soul-Winning The writer, who is the instructor on the subject of which this book treats, in the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, has prepared this work not more for the general public than for the young men and women who regularly take the work in his classes. Many of the students have expressed a wish to have these lectures in a printed and a completed form, so that when out in the field they may have Opportunity to refer to and make use'of them in the work of soul-winning, to which they have dedicated their lives. Being a graduate of the Institute, the writer had the privilege of listening to similar instruction from Rev. B. A. Torrey, D.D., whom he highly honored as a teacher, and who has read the proof sheets of this book with commendation. The nature of the theme, to say nothing of the impression made by such a teacher on his pupil, may show in this book a cer tain general similarity in manner of presentation. The great indebtedness of the writer to Dr. Torrey is hereby gratefully expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul-Winner's Gospel: The Saving Doctrines of the Gospel of John, Interpreted and Applied in Personal Work With Resultant Conversions Christianity and evangelism are inseparable. In its first form the Christian religion was a Gospel - an Evangel, a message of Good News. The Great Commission is a command to evangelize. The earliest church was the offspring of evangelism and the mother of evangelists. In the nature of the case the Apostolic community could know of no other way of propagating and growing than by evangelistic effort. And every Christian was expected to be, and was, an evangelist. The time came, however, when a new class of persons arose for the Church to take hold of and Christianize, viz., her own children. To these the Evangel was no new thing. They could not be evangelized as their parents were. They must be nurtured and trained in the faith received from believing fathers and mothers. Thus arose Christian nurture, after evangelism. But it did not supersede it. The evangelist still went forth outside of the Christian community to tell men of God's love through Jesus Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal and Practical Christian Work For forty years it has been my privilege and delight to teach and practice the art of soul-winning. As a pastor, it has been my privilege to minister to the sick, the shut - ins, and those bereft of loved ones, and to form friendships that have endured for long years, but the supreme joy of my life has been found in clasping the hand of a man who has looked me in the eyes and said, I will take Jesus Christ to be my Saviour, and I will confess Him before men. If the pages of this book are used to lead others to engage in soul-saving service in which they will find unspeakable joy, it will not have been written in vain. There are many doors of usefulness open to Chris tians, but after fifty years of practical participation in church life, I am persuaded that the one door which has been opened to all by the Hand that was pierced, the one possible for all to enter, and the one for our attitude toward which we shall all be held accountable, - is the door through which He entered Who found the woman at the well and Who says to every believer, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Long struggle, and that which, as we say, survives, is the particular manifestation of life which has won itself in the struggle for existence. I think it is well for us to' look at this aspect of our Christian life from time to time, because there are so many different theories about the meaning and Object of religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method in Soul-Winning: On Home and Foreign Fields The writer of the following pages, while yet in student days, was singularly led, largely through the influence of Dwight L. Moody and some of his associate workers in Chicago, into active efforts for souls, and was blessed in seeing many brought to the acceptance of Christ. Later when he entered the ministry and assumed different pastorates, east and west, much more marked blessing attended his labours of an evangelistic sort. An important spiritual crisis through which he passed while pastor in Indianapolis, in 1884, led him to see with new clearness that faith primarily involves a decisive act of the will in obedience to some present measure of spiritual light. This rather than theoretic belief of the truth as a system of intellectual propositions, is the chief element in that "belief of the heart" which is "unto righteousness." It is also the only principle on which any Christian however orthodox can grow in grace, and have power to help others into light. A certain measure of theoretic belief is, of course, always implied in an act of faith; and may usually, in Christian lands, be taken for granted. Practically, however, what others need from us, is to be "put on the clue" to a personal realization of Christ within themselves. This, the Holy Spirit, always and everywhere, waits and yearns to work in the willing heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soul-Winning: A Problem and Its Solution Methodism is the revivalist of modern times. It came into a group of formal churches. It passed by. The hem of its trailing garments touched the cold, silent forms, and virtue went out into them. They felt a new throb of life and sprang upon their feet and began anew the saving work in the world. Thus the birthright and birthmark of Methodism is revival work. Methodism as a form of work means the best available method under the circumstances. It is not bound by set forms, but by certain results. It must secure the new life. This life certainly secured is free to make its natural manifestation. Its forms and expressions are as varied as the habits of the peoples and communities touched. It is thus adapted to every grade of culture, from the peasant to the philosopher. The blind men healed by the Saviour did not say to their fellows, "You are not healed because Jesus did not send you to wash in the pool of Siloam," nor "because Jesus did not touch your eyes."
