Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Men and Things on Long Island, Vol. 1 Improvement after improvement followed in the Frank lin until perfection was nearly attained. No special credit is due to any one individual, unless it be to Count Rumford who made a cook stove with an oven, then for the first time was learned how to bake and cook and be protected from the di rect heat of the fire, which had formerly been done in front of the blazing fire of the hearth, or in a brick oven detached from the house. From these early methods of our ancestors, from the old corner fireplace to the modern steam heat, from the old tallow candle to electricity, from the wheat shock in the field to a bag of Hecker's prepared flour were long and tedious processes of evolution. Machinery has also solved its great problem from the sickle and sythe to the reaping machine and from the old ail, which resounded on the barn oor all winter long, in separating the seed from the sheaf, is now accomplished in hours by the threshing machine where months were formerly involved. The next stage of development was from the house to the factory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Men and Things on Long Island, Vol. 2 Spencer, Wallace and others is the greatest the world has ever witnessed. The author of the Vestiges in concluding his work says Thus ends a book composed in solitude and almost without the cognizance of a single fellow being, as solely as possible for the purpose of improving the knowledge of mankind and through that medium their happiness. For reasons best to be appreciated by myself, my name is retained in its original obscurity and in all probability will never be generally known. Carpenters, painters and masons received six shillings per day and found, farm hands, laborers, ten dollars pe month in winter and fifteen dollars in summer and board. A day's work was from sun to sun. Plain board at a farm house could be obtained at six shillings per week; women help in the house, six shillings per week. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Long Island: From Its Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time IN collecting materials for the History Of Long Island, the compiler has availed himself Of every source Of authentic information to render the work both use ful and interesting; with what success must be left to the consideration Of the reader. He has avoided no reasonable labor or expense to make his publication worthy Of approbation, although he has failed to satisfy himself in accomplishing all that he anticipated on first setting out. Beauty Of style and elegance Of description were not among the primary Objects of the compiler, his principal aim being to present a correct and full account Of Long Island, constituting a valuable repository Of historical and statistical information. Had he anticipated the labor and responsibility he was about to assume, with the obstacles to be encountered in his progress, he would most likely have abandoned the undertaking, even after a large mass of material had been accumulated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Long Island, Vol. 2: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time The elemental strength of his character was first clearly demonstrated by his work in building the town of Florence, New York. From his boyhood he had known Gerrit Smith. The eminent capitalist and philanthropist, who in 1832 made him a propo sitiou according to the terms of which he was to go to Oneida county. New York, where Mr. Smith owned large tracts of land, and found a manufac turing town'. He was then a young man of only twenty-four years, but the work was successfully accomplished, and the village of Florence. New York, was transformed into a thriving little city of between two and three thousand. H'is active identification with things political began during the period of his residence in Florence, for in 1838 he was elected to the state legislature on the Whig ticket. In a Democratic-district. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
