Our old leadership and educational models no longer work in this unpredictable and complex environment. What does work in times of turmoil is the ability to envision and enact new models, new systems and new forms of leadership. The contributions in this book provide leaders and change agents with a broad perspective on how transformation can take place across different domains as well as practical steps that can be implemented in various situations. It offers examples from different cultures, regions, and religions to help leaders quickly adapt and embrace whatever challenges that emerge. Taken together, the enclosed chapters provide a roadmap for a more positive future for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is based on the premise that there can be no organizational transformation without personal transformation. Anything else is just moving the chairs around on the deck of the Titanic, and we see that all too often in organizations today. Einstein said that we cannot solve problems from the same mindset that created the problems. In order to see positive change occur in the world, we must shift our consciousness to a high level of thinking and being, but we must also have systems or approaches that scale up, so that there is a collective shift in consciousness in groups, work teams, villages, governments, and corporations. This handbook aims to draw the best and most creative thinking about the field of transformation in one place, to present a comprehensive overview of leading edge transformation theories and approaches for both the academic and the practitioner. In fact, the lines between academic and practitioner are becoming more and more blurred these days. Many management faculty also consult to organizations, a practice that deeply enriches their teaching and research. And many successful full-time consultants conduct high quality research to support their approaches and change initiatives. This Handbook aims to be a creative dialogue in this space that integrates transformation theory and practice. The Handbook of Personal and Organizational Transformation acknowledges the classic literature and principles that have informed the field to date, but primarily showcases authors who are on the cutting edge of new theories and new approaches to give us their latest thinking. Some of these ideas are conjecture about what is possible in human and organizational development. Some of these approaches are currently being tested in the field and may not yet have scientific results. And some of these theories and models have stunning results, but may not have been published in academic journals because the author is a practitioner instead of an academic, or because the concepts are a little too far out of the mainstream. The aim of this book is to expand the reader’s thinking and to encourage readers to be courageous about their involvement in creating transformation, at whatever level they feel called to do so. It will serve as an essential resource for researchers and students of organizational culture, leadership, and change management, as well as consultants, business and team leaders, and anyone interested in global trends and their impact on corporate culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Can You Become the Boss traces the trajectory of knowledge, skills, and disposition beginning with the ones needed to lead oneself through to leading others to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to lead themselves, and ultimately, using that knowledge, those skills, and dispositions for leading an organization to transformation. The goals is being able to lead a party of one before assuming that one can lead others. Leading an organization means transformation into more of what the organization was intended to be by its vision and mission. Leaders develop a personal vision and mission, use the 168 hours a week that everyone has to produce a result, hold a problem-solving frame of mind, cultivate a desire to learn, and productively use self-talk. Ultimately these leaders foster a team approach through a culture of participantship. They regard leadership as an action rather than a position. They see the future of leadership as collective, lateral, and integral and work with others from an abundance mentality. These leaders move forward in learning, using neuroscience findings to promote actions grounded in brain research and assuming responsibility as a way of being for the organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that approximately seventy percent of organizations fail in their attempts to implement transformative change. This book will help lessen that rate. Using real-world examples, Bruce J. Avolio maps four states of change that any organization must go through: identifying and recognizing, initiating, emerging and impending, and institutionalizing new ways of operating. Each state is described in detail, as are the leadership qualities necessary to solidify and transition from one to the next. These "in-between moments" are an often-overlooked key to organizational transformation. So too is the fact that organizational change happens one individual at a time. For transformation to take root, each person must shift his or her sense of self at work and the role that he or she plays in the transforming organization. Intended as a road map, rather than a "how-to" manual with fixed procedures, Organizational Transformation will help leaders to locate their organization's position on a continuum of progress and confidently navigate planned, whole-systems change, overcoming the challenges of growing from and adjusting to watershed moments.

Book excerpt: This text is designed to help managers who have to deal with a complex environment, and who are often presented with "ready-made" solutions as to how to best organize their firm, to best use information technology. The book presents a simple and attractive framework within which managers can analyze their firm's environment and characteristics, and reflect on the most appropriate way - for them - to "put the puzzle together." It provides the manager and student with an integrated conceptual but pragmatic framework to analyze their situation. Courses examining the role of Information Technology in emerging organizational forms will find a well-grounded conceptual framework, illustrated with in-depth case studies. The book draws from the latest research in industrial organization, strategy, information technology, organizational theory, and leadership. It examines the individual puzzle pieces that have to be put together - strategy, structure, information technology, and leadership, and present the cases of three firms that were equally successful in putting these pieces together, while choosing pieces with dramatically different forms and adjusting them in radically different ways. The three in-depth cases included in the book are international:Oticon is a Danish firm with close to 1500 employees and is a world leader in the manufacture of hearing aids. Li & Fung is another, fist established in Canton and is an international trading company.Progressive Insurance which is the third largest insurance company in the US.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Change (Transformation) in Government Organizations” discusses recent efforts to bring about change in government organizations. The book brings together contributions by a number of managers, practitioners, academics and consultants in the study of international, federal, state, and local government efforts to respond to increased calls for change (transformation) in public sector organizations. Each contributor describes their work in this area using as a backdrop the fact that public sector organizations continue to be under new and substantial pressures to change and transform themselves. Hence a collection of current contributions such as those in this book are intended to add to the ongoing debates and rewriting of the success and failures of change in public sector organizations. The ultimate purpose of this book is to further our knowledge about the related issues and current efforts to bring about change or transformation in public sector organizations. The contributors, all experts with extensive experience as change agents in both public and private sector organizations not only support their analyses and discussions of specific cases and change (transformation) management issues but also provide practical tools, ideas and lessons learned, intended to be generalizable to other public sector agencies and helpful to those responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating similar efforts in the years to come. The audience for the book will be government managers, scholars and others interested in undertaking or learning about such efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every leader understands the burning need for change–and every leader knows how risky it is, and how often it fails. To make organizational change work, you need to base it on science, not intuition. Despite hundreds of books on change, failure rates remain sky high. Are there deep flaws in the guidance change leaders are given? While eschewing the pat answers, linear models, and change recipes offered elsewhere, Paul Gibbons offers the first blueprint for change that fully reflects the newest advances in mindfulness, behavioral economics, the psychology of risk-taking, neuroscience, mindfulness, and complexity theory. Change management, ostensibly the craft of making change happen, is rife with myth, pseudoscience, and flawed ideas from pop psychology. In Gibbons’ view, change management should be “euthanized” and replaced with change agile businesses, with change leaders at every level. To achieve that, business education and leadership training in organizations needs to become more accountable for real results, not just participant satisfaction (the “edutainment” culture). Twenty-first century change leaders need to focus less on project results, more on creating agile cultures and businesses full of staff who have “get to” rather than “have to” attitudes. To do that, change leaders will have to leave behind the old paradigm of “carrots and sticks,” both of which destroy engagement. “New analytics” offer more data-driven approaches to decision making, but present a host of people challenges—where petabyte information flows meet traditional decision-making structures. These approaches will have to be complemented with “leading with science”—that is, using evidence-based management to inform strategy and policy decisions. In The Science of Successful Organizational Change , you'll learn: How the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous) world affects the scale and pace of change in today’s businesses How understanding of flaws in human decision-making can help leaders guide their teams toward wiser strategic decisions when the stakes are largest—including “when to trust your guy and when to trust a model” and “when all of us are smarter than one of us” How new advances in neuroscience have altered best practices in influencing colleagues; negotiating with partners; engaging followers' hearts, minds, and behaviors; and managing resistance How leading organizations are making use of the science of mindfulness to create agile learners and agile cultures How new ideas from analytics, forecasting, and risk are humbling those who thought they knew the future–and how the human side of analytics and the psychology of risk are paradoxically more important in this technologically enabled world What complexity theory means for decision-making in the context of your own business How to create resilient and agile business cultures and anti-fragile, dynamic business structures To link science with your "on-the-ground" reality, Gibbons tells “warts and all” stories from his twenty-plus years consulting to top teams and at the largest businesses in the world. You'll find case studies from well-known companies like IBM and Shell and CEO interviews from Nokia and Barclays Bank.
