La prima parte del lavoro inquadra i personaggi all'interno della trama episodica del Vangelo, con la conseguente differenziazione della funzione narrativa da assegnare al diversi racconti che la compongono. La parte successiva si studia di verificare quanto premesso, analizzando la sequenza degli episodi con i personaggi minori che occupano la sezione che va dal capitolo quarto all'ottavo: l' indemoniato geraseno (5, 1 -20), glairo e l'emorroissa (5,21 -43), la sirofenicia e il sordomuto con i suoi compagni (7,24-37) ed infine il cieco di Betsaida (8,22-26). Parallelamente, valorizza il percorso di caratterizzazione del protagonista, Gesu, che si snoda sino alla confessione di 8,29: tappa decisiva, benche preliminare, nell'economia del vangelo e punto d'approdo del presente lavoro. Questa duplice attenzione permette di evitare il rischio. corso frequentemente dalla critica esegetica, di compattare indebitamente i personaggi minori entro il confine di un personaggio-gruppo (character-group) che spiana le differenze funzionali e non tiene in debito conto il processo costruttivo del secondo vangelo. Da questa lettura emerge che l'intenzione di Marco non e di squalificare l' incomprensione dei discepoli a tutto vantaggio dell'esemplarita dei personaggi minori. Costoro, proprio a motivo della loro presenza una tantum nella trama, hanno piuttosto una funzione illustrativa ed epesegetica della posta in gioco nel progressivo snodarsi del racconto.
