Book excerpt: ABU NUWAS & OBEYD ZAKANI 'CONTROVERSIAL' DERVISH/SUFI POETS Selected Poems & Prose Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Abu Nuwas (757-814) was the most famous and infamous poet who composed in Arabic of the Abbasid era. His style was extravagant and his compositions reflected the licentious manners of the upper classes of his day. As a youth he was sold into slavery; a wealthy benefactor later set him free. As a man he finally settled in Baghdad and was composing poetry. Because of his long hair, he acquired the name Abu Nuwas (Father of Ringlets). Gradually he attracted the attention of Harun al-Rashid and was given quarters at court. His ability as a poet no doubt was one reason for Abu Nuwas' success with the caliph, but after a while he became known as a reprobate and participated in less reputable pastimes with the ruler. He spent time in Egypt but soon returned to Baghdad to live out his remaining years. He is popular today, perhaps more so than he ever was, as a kind of comic anti-hero. His poems consist of qit'as (of which he was the first master) ghazals and qasidas. His poems could be classified into: praises, mockeries, jokes, complaints, love of men and women, wine, hunting, laments, asceticism. All forms are here in the true meaning & rhyme structure. Introduction: Life, Times & Poetry and forms both composed in and two appendixes of some stories about him in the Arabian Nights and elsewhere. Obeyd Zakani (1300-1371) is an important a figure in Persian and Sufi literature and poetry. His satire, humorous stories, ribald and obscene poems, social commentary, mystical ghazals, prose, ruba'is, qit'as and his famous epic qasida 'Cat & Mouse' are popular today and are more relevant than ever. Book excerpt: THE SUFI TARJI-BAND, A STROPHE POEM Selected Poems by Farrukhi, 'Iraqi, Obeyd Zakani, Hafiz, Jahan Khatun, Shah Ni'matu'llah, Hatef & Nazir Translation & Introduction Paul Smith A Persian or Urdu Sufi tarji-band consists of a series of stanzas or strophes each containing a variable but equal, or nearly equal, number of couplets all in one rhyme... as in the ghazal and qasida, these stanzas being separated from each other by a series of isolated rhyming couplets that mark the end of each strophe. If the same couplet (or refrain) is repeated at the end of each band, or strophe, the poem is a tarji-band, or 'return-tie'. From Farrukhi (the probable inventor of this form) to 'Iraqi, the first great Sufi poet to take it up, to the outrageous Sufi satirist Obeyd Zakani, to the greatest of all the Persian lyric Sufi poets Hafiz, to his friend the tragic princess Jahan Khatun, Shah Ni'matu'llah the Sufi Master, to Hatef, considered by many to be the master of this form and lastly to the great Urdu poet and Sufi Nazir Akbarabadi. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept and beauty and meaning of these sometimes satirical, honest, eye-opening, powerful, loving and occasionally controversial and at times deeply mystical poems. Introduction: Form of the Tarji-band, Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art & Use of Poetry. Life, Times & Poetry of each poet with 'Further Reading'. Large Print (14pt) and Large Format (7" x 10") Edition. Pages 223. Book excerpt: The romantic lyricism of the great Persian poet Hafiz (1315-1390) continues to be admired around the world. Recent exploration of that lyricism by Iranian scholars has revealed that, in addition to his masterful use of poetic devices, Hafiz's verse is deeply steeped in the philosophy and symbolism of Persian love mysticism. This innovative volume discusses the aesthetic theories and mystical philosophy of the classical Persian love-lyric (ghazal) as particularly exemplified by Hafiz (who, along with Rumi and Sa'di, is Persia's most celebrated poet). For the first time in western literature, Hafiz's rhetoric of romance is situated within the broader context of what scholars refer to as 'Love Theory' in Arabic and Persian poetry in particular and Islamic literature more generally. Contributors from both the West and Iran conduct a major investigation of the love lyrics of Hafiz and of what they signified to that high culture and civilization which was devoted to the School of Love in medieval Persia. The volume will have strong appeal to scholars of the Middle East, medieval Islamic literature, and the history and culture of Iran.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent civil servant, scientist, and intellectual, Taghi Erani was a pivotal figure in interwar Iran. Witness to two of the major political upheavals in the twentieth century—the rise of Pahlavi and the collapse of the Weimar Republic—he turned from fundamental science to leftwing activism and pacifism, leading to his arrest and death in prison. Younes Jalali traces his journey from Tehran to Berlin, where in the 1920s he crossed paths with the greatest German scientists and scholars of his day, including Max Planck, Albert Einstein, and Friedrich Rosen, and published seminal works on psychology and political philosophy. In the 1930s, as Reza Shah pursued rapprochement with the Third Reich, Taghi Erani was caught up in a crackdown on left-wing and pro-labor activists. His life and death offer a unique lens through which to view modern Iranian intellectual and political history.
