Book excerpt: Intelligent Information Systems (IIS) can be defined as the next generation of Information Systems (IS) developed as a result of integration of AI and database (DB) technologies. IIS embody knowledge that allows them to exhibit intelligent behavior, allows them to cooperate with users and other systems in problem solving, discovery, retrieval, and manipulation of data and knowledge. For any IIS to serve its purpose, the information must be available when it is needed. This means that the computing systems used to store data and process the information, and the security controls used to protect it must be functioning correctly. This book covers some of the above topics and it is divided into four sections: Classification, Approximation and Data Security, Knowledge Management, and Application of IIS to medical and music domains.

Book excerpt: Qualitative research has become a legitimate approach within the information systems community, but researchers have traditionally drawn upon material from the social sciences given the absence of a single source relevant to them. Qualitative Research in Information Systems: A Reader represents just such a volume and is both timely and relevant. Information systems and qualitative research articles are now widely used for teaching on many upper level courses in information systems, and there is demand for a definitive collection of these readings as a basic reader and teaching text. This book expertly brings together the seminal works in the field, along with editorial introductions to assist the reader in understanding the essential principles of qualitative research. The book is organised according to the following thematic sections: · Part I: Overview of Qualitative Research · Part II: Philosophical Perspectives · Part III: Qualitative Research Methods · Part IV: Modes of Analyzing and Interpreting Qualitative Data Qualitative Research in Information Systems: A Reader should become the benchmark reference point for students and researchers in information systems, management science and others involved in information technology needing to learn about qualitative research.

Book excerpt: Quantum Information Processing is a young and rapidly growing field of research at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and computer science. Its ultimate goal is to harness quantum physics to conceive -- and ultimately build -- "quantum" computers that would dramatically overtake the capabilities of today's "classical" computers. One example of the power of a quantum computer is its ability to efficiently find the prime factors of a larger integer, thus shaking the supposedly secure foundations of standard encryption schemes. This comprehensive textbook on the rapidly advancing field introduces readers to the fundamental concepts of information theory and quantum entanglement, taking into account the current state of research and development. It thus covers all current concepts in quantum computing, both theoretical and experimental, before moving on to the latest implementations of quantum computing and communication protocols. With its series of exercises, this is ideal reading for students and lecturers in physics and informatics, as well as experimental and theoretical physicists, and physicists in industry. Dagmar Bruß graduated at RWTH University Aachen, Germany, and received her PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Heidelberg in 1994. As a research fellow at the University of Oxford she started to work in quantum information theory. Another fellowship at ISI Torino, Italy, followed. While being a research assistant at the University of Hannover she completed her habilitation. Since 2004 Professor Bruß has been holding a chair at the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany. Gerd Leuchs studied physics and mathematics at the University of Cologne, Germany, and received his Ph.D. in 1978. After two research visits at the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA, he headed the German gravitational wave detection group from 1985 to 1989. He became technical director at Nanomach AG in Switzerland. Since 1994 Professor Leuchs has been holding the chair for optics at the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. His fields of research span the range from modern aspects of classical optics to quantum optics and quantum information. Since 2003 he has been Director of the Max Planck Research Group for Optics, Information and Photonics at Erlangen.

Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions by participants in the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference on Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, held at the University of Colorado in June 1984. The conference brought together researchers from a wide spectrum of areas in Hamiltonian dynamics. The papers vary from expository descriptions of recent developments to fairly technical presentations with new results. Collectively, they provide an excellent survey of contemporary work in this area. The field of Hamiltonian dynamics has its roots in Newton's application of the science of dynamics to the emerging problems of orbital mechanics and in the development of celestial mechanics. Indeed, many of the talks at the conference emphasized topics directly concerned with such questions as the Newtonian $n$-body problem, the three-body problem, and the artificial earth satellite. Some speakers focused on those dynamical issues--such as integrability, KAM, and extensions of the Poincare-Birkhoff results--that emerged from celestial mechanics and extend to wider classes of dynamical systems. Other topics covered include periodic orbits with variation methods, twist and annulus maps, stable mainfold theory, almost periodic motion, and heteroclinic and homoclinic orbits. By bringing together papers from such a diverse range of topics, this book may serve to stimulate further development in this area.

Book excerpt: In the quantum world, a particle can behave like a wave and accordingly seems to be in two places at eh same time. This of course is contradictory to our daily experiences with classical particles. How then should this be understood? What happens in the transitional area between the classical world and quantum mechanics? The present book answers exciting questions like these in a way that is easy to follow and to understand and it shows that the link between these two worlds will have concrete and applied effects on our daily life in the near future. It will, for example, improve and change the conventional methods of information processing. With the help of quantum cryptography, it will be possible to communicate tap-proof. Using quantum computers we will be able to solve highly complicated problems in a very short time.
