Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of experiment and simple theory is used to investigate the deformation response of complete, hollow, spherical shells subjected at elevated temperatures to high velocity normal imapct upon a planar rigid target. Temperature of the shells at impact is a few hundred degrees Fahrenheit below their melting point. A semi-inverse method of analysis is developed which is based upon energy conservation during the impact process. The method for prediction of dynamic behavior is essentially a static description of the deformation process. An assumed shell deformation pattern closely resembling the postimpact pattern obtained by test is used in formulating the external work and strain energy expressions.
Book Synopsis Deformation of Rigid-Plastic Spherical Shells in Low Velocity Impact by : Dean P. Updike
Download or read book Deformation of Rigid-Plastic Spherical Shells in Low Velocity Impact written by Dean P. Updike and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behavior of a rigid-perfectly plastic spherical shell loaded under static conditions simulating low velocity impact of the shell against a flat rigid surface is considered. Large axisymmetric deformations of the shell are investigated. At each stage of deformation an approximate limit load and corresponding velocity field are found for an assumed deformed shape of the shell, which later is shown to be very close to the calculated deformed shape. A simple formula relating the total axial force on the shell to the displacement of the shell is derived, and its range of validity is investigated. Finally, the results of some static tests of shells are shown to agree favorably with the theory. (Author).

Book Synopsis Bendings of Surfaces and Stability of Shells by : Alekse_ Vasil_evich Pogorelov

This book was released on 1988-12-31 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an accessible exposition of the geometric theory of stability of elastic shells, starting from the basic facts of the theory of finite and infinitesimal bendings of surfaces. The author has included a number of new results obtained in recent years. In particular, the complete solution of the problem of stability of spherical shells under an external pressure is contained here without any assumptions regarding the character of buckling. Within the framework of the mathematical model of the phenomenon, the author gives a complete investigation of the loss of stability of a general, strictly convex shell fastened along an edge under external pressure. The author considers the question of the loss of stability of cylindrical shells under axial compression and the effect of various factors on the critical load, among other questions. In contrast to the author's 1967 book on the subject, this work is limited to a relatively small number of classical problems on the loss of stability of shells, but these problems are investigated more thoroughly.
