X, i (December, 1952, pp. 49-57) - Richard Hill did kindly allow me to itemize my indebtednesses to the Spanish friends whose names make up two-thirds of the following list. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major French poet to disassociate lyric poetry from its musical setting, Eustache Deschamps gives poetry a value independent of music. This work, Deschamps' ars poetica, examines many aspects of medieval attitudes towards poetry as well as the historical conditions of medieval life. Despite remaining incomplete, L'art de dictier is considered remarkable for its acceptance of the vernacular, its deemphasis of medieval setting, and its author's place in historical poetic tradition. In fact, Geoffrey Chaucer borrowed extensively from his French contemporary, and Deschamps returned the compliment, calling him "grand translateur" in his "Ballade adresse a Geoffrey Chaucer."

This volume explicates the historical circumstances surrounding the stories that the king tells about himself and his kingdom. As Mary's troubadour, he appeals to her as his advocate and consoler.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Las Siete Partidas, or Seven Divisions, is the major law code of thirteenth-century Spain, compiled by Alfonso X the Learned of Castile. Seven centuries later, this compendium of legal and customary information remains the foundation of modern Spanish law. In addition, its influence is notable in the law of Spain's former colonies, including Texas, California, and Louisiana. The work's extraordinary scope offers unparalleled insight into the social, intellectual, and cultural history of medieval Spain. Built on the armature of a law code, it is in effect an encyclopedia of medieval life. Long out of print, the English translation of Las Siete Partidas—first commissioned in 1931 by the American Bar Association—returns in a superior new edition. Editor and distinguished medieval historian Robert I. Burns, S.J., provides critical historical material in a new general Introduction and extensive introductions to each Partida. Jerry Craddock of the University of California, Berkeley, provides updated bibliographical notes, and Joseph O'Callaghan of Fordham University contributes a section on law in Alfonso's time. Las Siete Partidas is presented in five volumes, each available separately: The Medieval Church, Volume 1: The World of Clerics and Laymen (Partida I) Medieval Government, Volume 2: The World of Kings and Warriors (Partida II) The Medieval World of Law, Volume 3: Lawyers and Their Work (Partida III) Family, Commerce, and the Sea, Volume 4: The Worlds of Women and Merchants (Partidas IV and V) Underworlds, Volume 5: The Dead, the Criminal, and the Marginalized (Partidas VI and VII)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the essays collected in this volume had their origins in a conference entitled Nouveaux regards sur le manuscript 564 de Chantilly/New Perspectives on the Chantilly Codex held on 13-15 September 2001 in Tours, under the auspices of the Centre d'Etudes Superieures de la Renaissance (Universite Francois Rabelais/Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique). The conference was the last in a series of meetings held that week marking the tenth anniversary of the musical research branch, Programme Ricercar. The idea to hold the conference had emerged in 1999 as we ourselves embarked on a collaborative project on this most fascinating of music sources from the late Middle Ages. Our own extended scrutiny of the codex and its contents, which has culminated in the publication of a detailed study and the first colour reproduction of the manuscript made us keenly aware of the significance of this source and its repertory to our understanding of the history of music before 1600. The Chantilly codex is beyond doubt one of the most important sources for late medieval secular polyphony.

Book excerpt: This monumental study of medieval law and sexual conduct explores the origin and develpment of the Christian church's sex law and the systems of belief upon which that law rested. Focusing on the Church's own legal system of canon law, James A. Brundage offers a comprehensive history of legal doctrines–covering the millennium from A.D. 500 to 1500–concerning a wide variety of sexual behavior, including marital sex, adultery, homosexuality, concubinage, prostitution, masturbation, and incest. His survey makes strikingly clear how the system of sexual control in a world we have half-forgotten has shaped the world in which we live today. The regulation of marriage and divorce as we know it today, together with the outlawing of bigamy and polygamy and the imposition of criminal sanctions on such activities as sodomy, fellatio, cunnilingus, and bestiality, are all based in large measure upon ideas and beliefs about sexual morality that became law in Christian Europe in the Middle Ages. "Brundage's book is consistently learned, enormously useful, and frequently entertaining. It is the best we have on the relationships between theological norms, legal principles, and sexual practice."—Peter Iver Kaufman, Church History
