Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed investigation was planned to study the origin and development of selected Sahiwal herds and to determine the amount of inbreeding and its effect on various economic traits, to investigate and culling rates herd life, reasons for mortality and disposal of animals at different stages of life and their influence on improvement of the breds, and to evaluate the reproductive and productive status of different herds and to estimate the optimal levels of different reproductive traits affecting milk production. The inbred studies revealed that in general there was no delectarious effect of inbreeding on various economic traits considered. The exceptions were herd life, productive life and number of calvings in some herds. A great part of the total variation for majority of the characters studied in different herds was realised to be due to intangible causes and it seems unlikely that the range of variation could be reduced by inbreeding to a significant level. About disposal pattern in heifer calves the study revealed that more care is required in summer to save the lives of calves. The analysis of causes of mortality indicated the need for early and immediate diagnosis and treatment of the ailments which were found to cause losses so that the mortality could be restricted and higher intensities of selection by way of culling the cows for low production and other economic reasons could be achieved. The results of reproductive traits indicated that the effect of level of inbreeding varied greatly and in general there was deterioration in the traits among marginally inbred, moderate inbred and closely inbred groups while the trend was reverse in highly inbred cows. The reproductive traits recorded higher values during first lactation and in later lactations then did not differ much. The results obtained for different life time traits indicated that per day of production life and life time production were lower for herds having higher herd life and productive life and vice-versa. The results obtained concerning the effect of age at first calving on different first lactation traits revealed that the optima differed from herd to herd and from trait to trait, within a herd, indicating no significant role of age at first calving in determining these traits. It is concluded from the estimates that 30-39 months of age at first calving would be optimum for heifers to have higher performance in later life.
Book Synopsis Herd Size and Its Influence on Genetic Change for Economic Traits in Sahiwal by : S. K. Singh
Download or read book Herd Size and Its Influence on Genetic Change for Economic Traits in Sahiwal written by S. K. Singh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was conducted to find out the effect of various environmental factors affecting certain economic traits, to estimate genetic change in different herds and to determine relationship between herd size and genetic change in some economic traits and to study the effect of various levels of inbreeding on some economic traits. There was significant effect of period and season on birth weight of calves in most of the herds period and season of calving significantly affected average weight at calving based on repeated records but it did not affect weight at first calving in majority of the herds. The increase in milk yield from first to second or later lactations occured and this might be due to increased functional activity of the secretary tissues. The effect of period of calving on productio reflects the influence of changes in managemental practices. The phenotypic and genotypic trend study revealed in total, that in large herds although genetic trends wee clearly noticed in desirable direction, on account of poor environmental effects the resultant phenotypes were poor. On the contrary, in the smaller herds it was observed that although there was poor genetic improvement in herds because of good environmental conditions the performance was not had in compaison to larger herd in the context of phenotypic trends observed. Bull selection on the basis of their dam's performance played considerable role in bringing about favourable genetic changes in milk production. The estimates of heritability for weight at different ages indicated higher values in later ages in comparison to earlies ages. The phenotypic relationships of 300 days yield with weight at different ages were low in majority of the cases. The differeces between average birth weight and weight at different ages of inbred and non inbred calves were not statistically significant in all the herds except at Ganjaria for birth weight. Level of inbreeding had no significant effect on weight at different ages. No significant effect of different levels of inbreeding on weight at calving in majority of the cases. The average first lactation milk yield of inbred cows was lower than that of non-inbreds in all the herds although the differences between these groups were not statistically significiant in all the herds. It may be surmised that judicious inbreeding accompanied by proper culling policies can be practiced succesfully in dairy herds without affecting production traits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Livestock industry is vital in providing nutritive food rich in animal protein, supplementing family incomes and generating gainful employment for rural India, particularly among the small, marginal farmers, landless laborers and women. With the livestock and its allied sub-sectors assuming an important role in the national economy, there is a requirement to improve the present knowledge and information dissemination to students, teachers, planners and farmers. Prominent features of this book include vast coverage of the events from pre-independence to post -independence period in the areas of policy planning, research and development activities in veterinary, animal husbandry and animal sciences leading to 'white revolution', 'green revolution', 'egg revolution', 'pink revolution' and taking India at number one position in milk production, third in egg production, and fifth in meat production globally, with a mix of public-private partnership, technology adoption, policy support and political will. The book is easily understandable with factual information making it an excellent reference book. Animal Husbandry is directed to veterinary and agricultural students under the same faculties in Forestry and Horticulture. The book is recommended for teachers, research scientists, PG and UG students in disciplines including animal health, reproduction and production, encompassing animal nutrition, livestock products technology, animal genetics and breeding, and veterinary medicine. The faculties in Animal Husbandry and related disciplines must be necessarily updated for transforming the science in rural India. The book will cater to the needs of scholars in the streams of veterinary science, animal sciences, animal husbandry and agriculture undergoing BVSc & AH, BSc & AH, MVSc, MSc and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees.
