Book excerpt: This research is concerned with the development of computer-oriented procedures for the design of sampled data control systems. Two general areas of this problem are considered: the synthesis of optimal controllers having low dynamical order, and the design of adaptive control systems. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of a quantitative performance criterion. Two new performance criteria are developed; the meanquadratic-error criterion and the average rate-of-decay criterion. Since the primary requirement of a dynamical system is stability, these criteria are examined in terms of the theorems from Liapunov's direct method of stability analysis. The analysis of the rate criterion may be applied to nonlinear as well as linear systems. Included in the discussion are illustrations on how some of the qualitative performance criteria, such as 'good' transient response, may be satisfied through proper selection of the mathematical performance criterion. The optimization procedures are based upon the concept of performance feedback in which the evaluated performance of the system is used directly in the adjustment of the system parameters.

Book excerpt: Analytical methods of analysis for linear feedback control systems are extended to include distributed lag in its most generalized form (terminating impedance having both resistive and reactive components). Methods are developed for examining analytically the effect of the distributed lag element with general impedance termination on the performance of a linear feedback control system in regard to frequency response, root locus, and time response to a specified input. In the analytical development a generalized approach is used resulting in mathematics and corresponding computer programs that are readily usable for a wide variety of distributed lag systems containing any type and combination of input, cascaded element, and termination impedance. The only restriction of the methods developed is that each element or variable within the system is linear and can be described by a Laplace transform. Using the analytical methods developed, typical first and second order distributed lag systems are analyzed for various combinations and values of system parameters. The calculated values of the first order distributed lag system obtained by use of the digital computer are compared with those measured in a laboratory simulation using a distributed lag model in conjunction with the analog computer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent introduction to feedback control system design, this book offers a theoretical approach that captures the essential issues and can be applied to a wide range of practical problems. Its explorations of recent developments in the field emphasize the relationship of new procedures to classical control theory, with a focus on single input and output systems that keeps concepts accessible to students with limited backgrounds. The text is geared toward a single-semester senior course or a graduate-level class for students of electrical engineering. The opening chapters constitute a basic treatment of feedback design. Topics include a detailed formulation of the control design program, the fundamental issue of performance/stability robustness tradeoff, and the graphical design technique of loopshaping. Subsequent chapters extend the discussion of the loopshaping technique and connect it with notions of optimality. Concluding chapters examine controller design via optimization, offering a mathematical approach that is useful for multivariable systems.

Book excerpt: The essential introduction to the principles and applications of feedback systems—now fully revised and expanded This textbook covers the mathematics needed to model, analyze, and design feedback systems. Now more user-friendly than ever, this revised and expanded edition of Feedback Systems is a one-volume resource for students and researchers in mathematics and engineering. It has applications across a range of disciplines that utilize feedback in physical, biological, information, and economic systems. Karl Åström and Richard Murray use techniques from physics, computer science, and operations research to introduce control-oriented modeling. They begin with state space tools for analysis and design, including stability of solutions, Lyapunov functions, reachability, state feedback observability, and estimators. The matrix exponential plays a central role in the analysis of linear control systems, allowing a concise development of many of the key concepts for this class of models. Åström and Murray then develop and explain tools in the frequency domain, including transfer functions, Nyquist analysis, PID control, frequency domain design, and robustness. Features a new chapter on design principles and tools, illustrating the types of problems that can be solved using feedback Includes a new chapter on fundamental limits and new material on the Routh-Hurwitz criterion and root locus plots Provides exercises at the end of every chapter Comes with an electronic solutions manual An ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students Indispensable for researchers seeking a self-contained resource on control theory

Book excerpt: Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems provides a fresh new look at a subject with which many researchers may think themselves familiar. Rather than emphasising the differences between sampled-data and continuous-time systems, the authors proceed from the premise that, with modern sampling rates being as high as they are, it is becoming more appropriate to emphasise connections and similarities. The text is driven by three motives: · the ubiquity of computers in modern control and signal-processing equipment means that sampling of systems that really evolve continuously is unavoidable; · although superficially straightforward, sampling can easily produce erroneous results when not treated properly; and · the need for a thorough understanding of many aspects of sampling among researchers and engineers dealing with applications to which they are central. The authors tackle many misconceptions which, although appearing reasonable at first sight, are in fact either partially or completely erroneous. They also deal with linear and nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic cases. The impact of the ideas presented on several standard problems in signals and systems is illustrated using a number of applications. Academic researchers and graduate students in systems, control and signal processing will find the ideas presented in Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems to be a useful manual for dealing with sampled-data systems, clearing away mistaken ideas and bringing the subject thoroughly up to date. Researchers in statistics and economics will also derive benefit from the reworking of ideas relating a model derived from data sampling to an original continuous system.
