Book excerpt: When transmitting digital information by radio or wireline systems, errors may arise from additive noise and from successively transmitted signals interfering with one another. This report presents new results on evaluating the probability of error, i.e. performance, of optimum detector structures which are obtained when compound statistical decision theory is used to unravel noisy intersymbol interference patterns in the received signal. It includes a comparative study of the performance of certain detector structures and approximations to them, and the performance of a transversal equalizer. The report also shows that the optimum compound statistical decision procedure is not equivalent, either to subtracting out the interfering energy from the received signal, or to gathering together the energy which is dispersed throughout the received signal. Book excerpt: It is shown that the maximum-likelihood (ML) detector for noisy, binary channel with restricted intersymbol interference (ISI) consists of a matched filter followed by a tapped delay line. The useful output is a nonlinear function of the tap outputs. Bounds on the per-symbol probability of error indicate that a gross approximation to the ML detector performs as well as an optimum linear detector. The major assumptions are (1) bi-polar binary signals, (2) ISI only between adjacent bauds, (3) stationary additive white, Gaussian noise, and (4) perfect synchronization. Extensions are suggested to remove assumptions (1) and (2) and to handle stationary, non-white Gaussian noise. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses the problem of finding nearly optimal detector structures for non-Gaussian noise environments. It is assumed that the noise statistics are unknown except for a very loose characterization. Under this condition, the goal is to study adaptive detector structures that are simple, yet capable of high levels of performance. Attention is focused on the discrete-time locally optimal detector for a constant signal in independent, identically distributed noise. A definition for non-Gaussian noise is given, several common univariate density models are exhibited, and some physical non-Gaussian noise data is discussed. Two approaches in designing adaptive detector nonlinearities are presented, where it is assumed that the noise statistics are approximately stationary. Both proposals utilized simple measurements of the noise behavior to adapt the detector, and in several examples the adaptive detectors are shown capable of attaining nearly optimal performance levels. A simulation is presented demonstrating their successful application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invented more than a hundred years ago by Alexander Graham Bell, the technology of free-space optical communications, or lasercom, has finally reached the level of maturity required to meet a growing demand for operational multi-giga-bit-per-second data rate systems communicating to and from aircrafts and satellites. Putting the emphasis on near-earth links, including air, LEO, MEO, and GEO orbits, Near-Earth Laser Communications presents a summary of important free-space laser communication subsystem challenges and discusses potential ways to overcome them. This comprehensive reference provides up-to-date information on component and subsystem technologies, fundamental limitations, and approaches to reach those limits. It covers basic concepts and state-of-the-art technologies, emphasizing device technology, implementation techniques, and system trades. The authors discuss hardware technologies and their applications, and also explore ongoing research activities and those planned for the near future. The analytical aspects of laser communication have been covered to a great extent in several books. However, a detailed approach to system design and development, including trades on subsystem choices and implications of the hardware selection for satellite and aircraft telecommunications, is missing. Highlighting key design variations and critical differences between them, this book distills decades’ worth of experience into a practical resource on hardware technologies.

This is not a sUlprising view, considering that data storage is essentially the transfer of data between different times. The past decade has indeed seen rapidly growing interest in applying improved coding and detection techniques to magnetic data storage, a traditional approach to enhance performance of communication channels. Since its inception in the 1930's, the magnetic recording industry has achieved impressive progress in data capacity. This has been made possible mainly by innovations and advances in heads and media design. However, as the demand for higher storage capacity continues in the modem information era, a need arises to explore other possibilities to help meet the ever-growing demand. Advanced coding and detection are one such possibility, providing an efficient, cost-effective means to increase data capacity. In fact, with the advent of modem Ie technology which has enabled real-time implementation of increasingly complex signal processing algorithms, advanced coding and detection are rapidly becoming a major issue in the development of improved data storage products. While there have been remarkable advances in recent years in the areas of both coding and detection for data storage, this book focuses only on data detection, or the processing of readback waveforms to reproduce stored data, in conjunction with the traditional modulation coding method called run length-limited or (d,k) coding.
