However, there is a lack of well-instrumented, full-scale experiments to investigate the effect of geotextile reinforcement on the pavement design. In this study, full-scale accelerated tests were conducted on eight lanes of pavement test sections. Six out of these eight sections had granular bases reinforced with different types of woven geotextiles. The reinforced base sections and the control sections (with unreinforced base) were paved with Superpave hot-mix asphalt. Base and subgrade materials were the same for all sections while the test sections had different asphalt and base layer thicknesses. Each section was instrumented with two pressure cells on top of the subgrade, six strain gages on the geotextile body, six H-bar strain gages at the bottom of the asphalt layer, two thermocouples and one Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) sensor. The sections were loaded to 250,000 to 500,000 repetitions of an 80-kN single axle load of the accelerated pavement testing machine. The mechanistic response of each section was monitored and analyzed at selected number of wheel passes. Results indicate that properly selected and designed geotextile-reinforced bases improve pavement performance in term of rutting and reduced pressure at the top of the subgrade. Finite element (FE) models were developed and verified using results from the full-scale accelerated pavement tests. The calibrated model was used to investigate the effects of geotextile properties on the pavement responses. FE analysis shows that benefits of reinforcement are more evident when stiffer geotextile is used.

Book excerpt: This research study aims at evaluating the benefits of using geosynthetics to reinforce/stabilize base aggregate layer/subgrade in pavements under repeated loading test conditions. For this purpose, a total of six 80-ft. long and 13 ft. wide full-scale test lane sections were constructed, among which two sections were reinforced by one or two layers of triaxial geogrids, two sections were reinforced by one layer of high strength woven geotextile with different base layer thickness, and the remaining two sections were the control sections. The field test sections were instrumented by a variety of sensors to measure the load- and environment-associated pavement response and performance. Two series of tests, moving wheel load tests and cyclic plate load tests, were conducted to investigate the field performance of geosynthetic reinforced/stabilized paved roads and to identify the differences in pavement response to moving wheel and cyclic plate loads. In addition, six similar test sections were constructed inside a 6.5-ft. × 6.5-ft. × 5.5-ft. test box. The test box sections were also instrumented by a variety of sensors to measure the load-associated pavement response and performance. Laboratory cyclic plate load tests were then conducted. The results of accelerated load testing on the pavement test sections demonstrate the benefits of using geosynthetics in reducing the permanent deformation in the pavement structure. The adjusted traffic benefit ratio (TBRadj) associated with geosynthetic reinforcement can be increased up to 2.12 at a rut depth of 0.75 in. for pavement constructed using 18 in. thick base layer on top of weak subgrade soil using two layers of geogrid reinforcement. The inclusion of geosynthetics results in redistributing the applied load to a wider area, thus reducing the accumulated permanent deformation within the subgrade. The benefit of geosynthetics on reducing the maximum stress on top of subgrade is more appreciable at higher load levels. It was also found that the geosynthetics placed at the base-subgrade interface was able to improve the performance of both subgrade and base layers; by placing an additional layer of geogrid at the upper one-third of the base layer, the performance of the base layer was further enhanced. While geosynthetics showed appreciable benefit on reducing the permanent deformation of the subgrade layer, it showed less effect on the resilient properties of the subgrade layer. Drainage of the base layer has important effect on the performance of pavement structures for both unreinforced and reinforced lane sections. The life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) demonstrated the cost savings of using geosynthetics in pavement as compared to the unreinforced/untreated sections. However, compared to the 12-in. cement/lime treated subgrade with the cement stabilized base pavement section, the LCCA showed it is more cost effective to use geosynthetics for base thickness less than 12 in. (or 15 in. of unreinforced aggregate base). The cost benefit becomes close for base thickness 12 in. between using a single geosynthetic layer and a 12-in. cement/lime treated subgrade with a cement stabilized base. Moreover, the cost benefit of using double geogrid layers exceeds the cost savings of a 12-in. treated subgrade with a cement stabilized base.

Book excerpt: In recent years polymer geogrids have been proposed and used to improve the performance of paved roadways and/or to reduce base course thickness. Performance improvements have been demonstrated for design conditions where relatively large rut depths are acceptable and where relatively weak pavement sections have been used. This work was undertaken to examine existing literature concerning laboratory and field experimental studies, and analytical studies pertaining to the inclusion of geogrid polymer materials in roadway pavement sections for the purpose of improving performance or to allow for a reduction in the constructed section thicknesses. The original goal of this study was to examine the feasibility of using existing data from laboratory or field studies and existing finite element models to validate and calibrate the model and then use the model to predict the response of pavement sections not included in the experimental studies. This study has indicated that this approach is feasible and has been accomplished by a previous project. Furthermore, the literature reviewed in this study has shown conflicting results pertaining to the level of improvement that is realized by inclusion of a geogrid in the base course layer of a pavement section. While additional laboratory and analytical studies may aid in resolving these conflicts it is concluded that the most productive approach at this point is to construct well instrumented, full scale field sections to assess improvement levels. These sections should be designed and constructed to include variables identified in previous studies as having the greatest impact on pavement performance.

Book excerpt: Geosynthetic reinforcement of the base, or subbase, course of pavement structures is addressed. The value added with reinforcement, design criteria/protocols, and practices for design and for material specifications are presented. Base, or subbase, reinforcement is defined within as the use of geosynthetic reinforcement in flexible pavements to support vehicular traffic over the life of a pavement structure. Primary base reinforcement benefits are to improve the service life and/or obtain equivalent performance with a reduced structural section. Substantial life-cycle cost savings are possible with base reinforcement. The use of geosynthetic reinforcement to aid in construction over low strength subgrades, termed subgrade restraint within, is also addressed. Geosynthetic reinforcement is used to increase the support equipment during construction of a roadway. Geogrid, geotextile, and geogrid-geotextile composite materials are addressed within.
