Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the past few years, teaching, research, and practice has underscored the importance of performance measurement and criterion development as topics of great interest, considerable debate, and some misunderstanding. It has also become clear that the field needs to address a compendium of research, applications, and issues. Performance Measurement: Current Perspectives and Future Challenges brings together internationally recognized leaders in the field and each examines the subject matter in a way that has never been done--focusing on the dynamic nature of work and the tremendous demands being placed on assessment and measurement as core organizational activities. It also uniquely uses their expertise to provide critical pointers to not only the practical implications of work in the field, but also to the new and continuing issues to be addressed and research to be conducted. The book will be useful to both scientists and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Business firms & public organizations have long struggled with the task of evaluating the performance of their managers & creating reward structures that truly motivate them to pursue organizational goals. Success in this vital task has been elusive. This volume presents a number of field studies by top scholars that address three key issues: 1) alternative methods of rewarding managers; 2) reward mechanisms across organizations & cultures; & 3) implementing performance evaluation schemes. Unlike most of the research done in this area, these studies look beneath the highly visible arenas of the CEO to the large, unexplored realm of middle management

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You cant understand, manage, or improve what you dont measure While every smart executive now knows the truth of those words, perhaps more so than anyone, it was Jerry Harbour who turned that adage into a science. Originally published in 1997, The Basics of Performance Measurement helped pioneer the science of performance measurement and continues to serve as an industry standard. Yet, despite the books continued relevancy, Harbour is once again stepping ahead of the curve to fully update his little yellow book. In addition to adding the wisdom of lessons learned over the past decade, he adds two new chapters to this second edition. One of these chapters discusses units of measurement. The other introduces ways to better interpret what has been measured and then translate those measurement-related interpretations into actionable knowledge. Harbour provides a six-step method for developing a performance measurement system. He shows how to design performance measurement families and how to build hierarchies tailored to different levels within an organization. He also covers collection and distribution, as well as the value of performance measure displays. When you finish this book, you will be able to undertake performance measurement with new confidence. You will also come away knowing how to present your findings with an authority that will convince stakeholders of the importance and accuracy of your results.

Book excerpt: "The Airborne Streak Tube Imaging LIDAR (ASTIL) was evaluated for use in detecting schools of tuna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) waters in order to aid in reducing bycatch of dolphin associated with yellowfin tuna. Three airborne experiments were conducted and data were collected for southern bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, akule (trachiurops crumenophthalmus), giant bluefin tuna (GBFT) and dolphin. The LIDAR signature of tuna was studied and extended to an evaluation of fish and fish school detection of GBFT using STIL experimental data. The utility of fish school detection was confirmed for GBFT in terms of detection statistics for binary hypothesis testing and also by direct implementation of a three-dimensional matched filter algorithm. Based on the GBFT observations, modeled performance estimates were made for yellowfin in the ETP for an upgraded ASTIL system."--p.11

From an academic perspective, all sections clearly outline the intricacies of the technology, new applications (other than for spore inactivation) and how technology related process variables impact on food, quality attributes, textures, safety, and chemical aspects, etc. From a manufacturer perspective, throughout the product development stage and the actual commercial implementation, the book content will assist users greatly in doing this efficiently and safely. Within a single reference book, this book reaches researchers in academia who face the challenge to drive the science and assist the manufacturers to commercialize these new technologies. It is also ideal for regulators around the world who need to assess these new technologies and implement guidelines for manufacturers. Provides a comprehensive overview on the technology, including food safety aspects, new product developments and regulations Thoroughly explores HPTP for microbial spore inactivation, the sterilization of ambient stable low-acid food products Covers HPTP and its effect on the production of food processing contaminants

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores and brings together the existent body of knowledge on building performance analysis Shortlisted in the CIBSE 2020 Building Performance Awards Building performance is an important yet surprisingly complex concept. This book presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of the subject. It provides a working definition of building performance, and an in-depth discussion of the role building performance plays throughout the building life cycle. The book also explores the perspectives of various stakeholders, the functions of buildings, performance requirements, performance quantification (both predicted and measured), criteria for success, and the challenges of using performance analysis in practice. Building Performance Analysis starts by introducing the subject of building performance: its key terms, definitions, history, and challenges. It then develops a theoretical foundation for the subject, explores the complexity of performance assessment, and the way that performance analysis impacts on actual buildings. In doing so, it attempts to answer the following questions: What is building performance? How can building performance be measured and analyzed? How does the analysis of building performance guide the improvement of buildings? And what can the building domain learn from the way performance is handled in other disciplines? Assembles the current body of knowledge on building performance analysis in one unique resource Offers deep insights into the complexity of using building performance analysis throughout the entire building life cycle, including design, operation and management Contributes an emergent theory of building performance and its analysis Building Performance Analysis will appeal to the building science community, both from industry and academia. It specifically targets advanced students in architectural engineering, building services design, building performance simulation and similar fields who hold an interest in ensuring that buildings meet the needs of their stakeholders.
