Book excerpt: A large portion of the network capacity of an ad hoc network can be wasted by the medium access mechanisms of omni-directional antennas. To overcome this problem, researchers propose the use of directional or adaptive antennas that largely reduce radio interference, improving the utilization of wireless medium and the resulting network throughput.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a remarkable interest in wireless ad hoc networks that operate without any infrastructure support. The potential for deployment of such networks exists in many scenarios ranging from civil and construction engineering, disaster relief to sensor networks and military applications. The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) is the dominant MAC (layer) protocol for wireless ad hoc networks. Though the DCF scheme has survived the test of time, it still has its characteristic flaws namely the hidden and exposed terminal problems. Various protocols have been suggested to address these problems thereby leading to an overall increase in network throughput. Some of the popular protocols involve adjusting the carrier sensing threshold, replacing the omni directional antennas with directional antennas and intelligent calibration of transmission power. Studies have shown that directional antennas offer numerous advantages over omni directional antennas and thus has the potential to enhance the performance of ad hoc networks. For one, directional antennas have the ability to streamline their power in the direction of the receiver thereby offering longer transmission and reception ranges for the same amount of power. MAC layer protocols specifically designed to support such directional transmission and reception has been a current active area of research. Most of these protocols consider directional transmission under the assumption that the communication range of omni and directional antennas are the same. Apparently this assumption is not supported in any realistic situation. Moreover, the scientific community has not researched in depth the effect of topology on power consumption in ad hoc networks. In this thesis, we propose a cross-layer power optimization scheme for wireless ad hoc networks. The novelty of our work lies in the fact that we exploit the knowledge of the network topology to dynamically calibrate transmission power. The information about the network topology is retrieved from the Network Layer. Specifically, we consider three different network topologies -- (i) a sparse topology, (ii) a dense topology and a (iii) clusterbased topology. The MAC layer implements a dynamic power control scheme which regulates the transmission power of a transmitting node based on the node density at the receiver's end. In addition a transmitting node can adjust its own transmission power to the optimal level if the SINR value at the receiving node is known. Our cross-layer power control algorithm takes the above fact into account. Extensive simulation in NS2 shows that in all the three topologies our cross layer power control scheme (use of directional antennas with power control) leads to prolonged network lifetime and significantly increases the system throughput.

Book excerpt: An ad hoc network is a dynamic network formed on demand by a group of nodes without the aid of any pre-existing network infrastructure. An efficient and effective medium access control (MAC) protocol which regulates nodes access to the shared channel(s) is essential in an ad hoc network. Our work is focused on the throughput and fairness properties of existing omni-directional MAC protocols as well as enhancement of their performance with directional antennas via both analytical and simulation approaches. In the first part, we present the first analytical modeling of collision avoidance MAC protocols including the popular IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in multi-hop ad hoc networks. We show that in ad hoc networks with a lot of hidden terminals, collision avoidance even if done correctly, can still limit achievable throughput significantly because of the much reduced spatial reuse. Then we advance the analytical modeling to evaluate those MAC protocols which use directional antennas and can achieve much higher throughput through directing transmissions and receptions to desired directions only. We show that the gain in spatial reuse outweighs that of collision avoidance and hence an aggressive all-directional scheme is more advantageous than other hybrid schemes that take conservative (or unnecessary) tradeoff between collision avoidance and spatial reuse. All the analytical work has provided very useful insight on the interaction between spatial reuse, interference reduction and collision avoidance that previous work lacked.

Book excerpt: Wireless ad hoc networks can suffer from capacity and scalability problems, especially when omni-directional antennas are used. Meeting the required Quality of Service (QoS) of the communications becomes a difficult task in such networks. To help alleviate these traditional problems of wireless ad hoc networks, this thesis presents the design and analysis of low level protocols and algorithms that intelligently use adaptive beamforming smart antennas to facilitate the provision of communications meeting QoS constraints of applications. The network model for which the protocols and algorithms in this thesis are designed is a cooperative, community wireless ad hoc network where nodes are in general fixed and there is no centrally owned infrastructure. This is an extension to the Suburban Ad-Hoc Network (SAHN). Though SAHN is a quasi-static network, much of the work of this thesis can be extended to include mobility. In this thesis medium access control, routing and topology control protocols and algorithms that are aware of QoS requirements of communications have been developed, simulated and evaluated. These protocols and algorithms take advantage of special characteristics of smart antennas. As a complete system, the new algorithms and protocols within a smart antenna equipped wireless ad hoc network, offers significant performance gains over traditional wireless networks.

It emphasizes that there is a major interdependence among various layers of the network protocol stack. Contrary to wired or even one-hop cellular networks, the lack of a fixed infrastructure, the inherent mobility, the wireless channel, and the underlying routing mechanism by ad hoc and sensor networks introduce a number of technological challenges that are difficult to address within the boundaries of a single protocol layer. All existing textbooks on the subject often focus on a specific aspect of the technology, and fail to provide critical insights on cross-layer interdependencies. To fully understand these intriguing networks, one need to grasp specific solutions individually, and also the many interdependencies and cross-layer interactions.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks have very unique features, such as dynamic topologies, relatively limited bandwidth and wireless signal propagation schemes, which present difficult challenges for wireless communication. We propose control mechanisms for channel access scheduling and topology control in ad hoc networks, respectively, which utilize the neighborhood information within two hops to cope with the difficulties of communicating in ad hoc networks. First, we present the neighbor-aware contention resolution (NCR) algorithm, and analyze its generic performance with regard to the contention delay and system throughput. The required neighbor information in NCR for ad hoc networks is acquired through the neighbor protocol, which is based on a random channel access mechanism and a reliable message propagation scheme using retransmissions. Then, four channel access protocols based on NCR are presented, namely NAMA, LAMA, PAMA and HAMA, which correspond to node-, link-, pair- wise- and hybrid-activation multiple access protocols, respectively. These protocols are aimed at ad hoc networks with omnidirectional antennas, and their performance is analyzed. Furthermore, channel access protocols, adapted from NAMA and PAMA, are considered for heterogeneous ad hoc networks that include unidirectional links, which may occur due to power and signal propagation differences between wireless stations.

They investigate both the performance of unicast traffic in the presence of broadcast traffic, and the performance of broadcast traffic when mixed with unicast traffic, which is different from previous investigations reported in the literature in which broadcast traffic was investigated in isolation. Through extensive simulation experiments with three Medium Access Control (MAC) schemes, they show that throughput and delay can vary widely even in networks in which nodes are uniformly distributed. They also show that the use of a MAC protocol that utilizes directional antennas can help to improve the performance of broadcast traffic in ad hoc networks, in terms of both throughput and delay, through a more aggressive channel access scheme that maximizes spatial reuse.
