Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "In recent years, rapid performance improvements in the design of processors, communications systems, and storage systems have facilitated the creation of new and exciting applications such as video-on- demand. With growing interest in video-on-demand as an application for high-performance computers, a close examination of the requirements and the performance evaluation of this application on such machines is warranted. Video-on-demand can be implemented on many platforms. A typical design includes a video server that supplies continuous video streams to a number of distributed viewing stations. This paper focuses on the use of a parallel processor as a video-on-demand server using this type of design. Presented are performance results based on a simulation model of the system. These results show that the internal network can be the bottleneck in this system. However, using a parallel processor as a video-on-demand server is scalable provided that sufficient buffering is present to eliminate or reduce glitches caused primarily by network contention."

Book excerpt: Interactive Video-on-Demand Systems: Resource Management and Scheduling Strategies addresses issues in scheduling and management of resources in an interactive continuous-media (e.g., audio and video) server. The book emphasizes dynamic and run-time strategies for resource scheduling and management. Such strategies provide effective tools for supporting interactivity with on-line users who require the system to be responsive in serving their requests, and whose needs and actions vary frequently over time. With an emphasis on responsiveness and transient performance, this book elaborates on dynamic strategies for managing and scheduling resources in Video-on-Demand/Multimedia systems. Unlike previous books, this volume presents an unprecedented detailed analysis of the start-up and departure of streams. It gives a comprehensive evaluation of various techniques as workloads are varied in multiple dimensions (including arrival rate, data rate and length of play). Interactive Video-on-Demand Systems: Resource Management and Scheduling Strategies collectively addresses multiple issues including QoS, throughput, responsiveness and efficiency. The solutions discussed in this volume are particularly valuable to practitioners who are building digital library, interactive multimedia and hypermedia servers. Interactive Video-on-Demand Systems: Resource Management and Scheduling Strategies is an excellent reference for researchers, practitioners and educators in the field of multimedia systems, and may be used for advanced courses on multimedia systems and Video-on-Demand servers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference in Enschede, The Netherlands, is the sixth in a series of international conferences and workshops under the title Protocols for Multimedia Systems, abbreviated as PROMS. The first PROMS workshop took place in June 1994 in Berlin, Germany, followed by workshops in Salzburg, Austria (October 1995) and Madrid, Spain (October 1996). In 1997, PROMS formed a temporary alliance with Multimedia Networking, a conference previously held in Aizu, Japan, in 1995. This led to the international conference on Protocols for Multimedia Systems – Multimedia Networking, PROMS MmNet, that took place in Santiago, Chile (November 1997). Since then PROMS has been announced as an international conference, although informal contacts and interactive sessions – as in a workshop – were retained as a desirable feature of PROMS. After a gap of three years, PROMS was organized in Cracow, Poland (October 2000), for the fifth time. We consider it a challenge to make this sixth edition of PROMS as successful as the previous events. The goal of the PROMS series of conferences and workshops is to contribute to scientific, strategic, and practical cooperation between research institutes and industrial companies in the area of multimedia protocols. This is also the goal of PROMS 2001. The basic theme of this conference continues to be multimedia protocols, both at the network and application level, although the increasing interest in wireless, mobility, and quality of service as interrelated topics with relevance to multimedia are reflected in the current program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) has become the application that drives theInternet to a new height. However, challenges still remain in IPTV in-home distribution. The high-quality video streaming in IPTV services demands home networks to deliver video streaming packets with stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. Currently, most service providers recommend Ethernet-based broadband home networks for IPTV. However, many existing houses are not wired with Ethernet cables and the rewiring cost is prohibitively expensive. Therefore, wireless solutions are preferred if their performance can meet the requirements. IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) are pervasively adopted in home networks for their flexibility and affordability. However, through our experiments in the real environment, we found that the conventional single-hop infrastructure mode WLANs have very limited capacity and coverage in a typical in-door environment due to high attenuation and interference. The single-hop wireless networks cannot provide supportfor high-quality video streaming to the entire house. Multi-hop wireless networksare therefore used to extend the coverage. Contrary to the common believes that adding relay routers in the same wireless channel should reduce the throughput, our experiment, analysis and simulation results show that the multi-hop IEEE 802.11 WLANs can improve both the capacity and coverage in certain scenarios, and sufficiently support high-quality video streaming in a typical house. In this research, we analyzed and evaluated the performance of H.264-based video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks. Our analysis and simulation results reveal a wide spectrum ofcoverage-capacity tradeoff of multi-hop wireless networks in generic scenarios. More-over, we discuss the methods of how to further improve video streaming performance. This research provides the guidance on how to achieve the optimal balance for a givenscenario, which is of great importance when deploying end-to-end IPTV services withQoS guarantee.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Design of servers to meet the quality of service (QoS) requirements of interactive Video-On-Demand (VOD) systems is challenging. Recognizing the increasing use of these systems in a wide range of applications, as well as the stringent service demands expected from them, several design alternatives have been proposed to improve server throughput. A buffer management technique, called interval caching, is one such solution, which can be implemented in conjunction with other techniques to further improve performance. This mechanism exploits the temporal locality of requests to the same movie and tries to serve requests from the cache, thereby enhancing system throughput. Earlier studies have examined interval caching with only normal playback operations and have not considered various interactive VCR functionalities such as fast forward, rewind, and pause. Moreover, the complexity of the problem has confined the evaluation methodology to simulation. In this paper, we present a mathematical model for analyzing the performance of an interactive video server that uses interval caching. In particular, it captures the complex interactions of five different VCR operations and predicts the improvement in system throughput due to interval caching. Validation through simulation shows that the model is quite accurate in predicting performance over a wide range of parameters. By simply plugging in the user interactivity and system configuration parameters, one can quantify the effectiveness of interval caching. Using this model as a design tool, impact of different VCR operations on client requests and rejection probability, effect of cache size, and server design alternatives with cost constraints have been analyzed."

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive view of the methods and approaches for performance evaluation of computer networks. It offers a clear and logical introduction to the topic, covering both fundamental concepts and practical aspects. It enables the reader to answer a series of questions regarding performance evaluation in modern computer networking scenarios, such as ‘What, where, and when to measure?’, ‘Which time scale is more appropriate for a particular measurement and analysis?’, 'Experimentation, simulation or emulation? Why?’, and ‘How do I best design a sound performance evaluation plan?’. The book includes concrete examples and applications in the important aspects of experimentation, simulation and emulation, and analytical modeling, with strong support from the scientific literature. It enables the identification of common shortcomings and highlights where students, researchers, and engineers should focus to conduct sound performance evaluation. This book is a useful guide to advanced undergraduates and graduate students, network engineers, and researchers who plan and design proper performance evaluation of computer networks and services. Previous knowledge of computer networks concepts, mechanisms, and protocols is assumed. Although the book provides a quick review on applied statistics in computer networking, familiarity with basic statistics is an asset. It is suitable for advanced courses on computer networking as well as for more specific courses as a secondary textbook.
