Book excerpt: The endurance time method (ETM) is a seismic analysis procedure in which intensifying dynamic excitations are used as the loading function, and it provides many unique benefits in the design of structures. It can largely reduce the computational effort needed for the response history analysis of structures. This aids in the practical application of response history-based analysis in problems involving very large models and/or requiring numerous analyses to achieve optimal design goals. A single response history analysis through ETM provides an estimate of the system response at the entire range of seismic intensities of interest, thus making it ideal for applications such as seismic risk assessment, life-cycle cost analysis, and value-based seismic design. Conceptual simplicity also makes ETM a useful tool for preliminary response history analysis of structural systems. Features: Presents full coverage of the subject from basic concepts to advanced applied topics. Provides a coherent text on endurance time excitation functions that are essential in endurance time analysis. Seismic Analysis and Design using the Endurance Time Method serves as a comprehensive resource for students, researchers, and practicing structural engineers who want to familiarize themselves with the concepts and applications of the endurance time method (ETM) as a useful tool for dynamic structural analysis.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlled rocking steel braced frames (CRSBFs) have been developed with the goal of minimizing the post-earthquake impact of primary building functions. While there has been significant research to date to demonstrate the viability of the CRSBF as a high-performance system, much less has been accomplished in the development of performance-based design and assessment methods. This research is focused on developing models, tools and techniques for practicing engineers to analyze, design and assess the performance of CRSBFs. To avoid the computational expense of nonlinear response history analyses, an approximate method is formulated to estimate the CRSBF drift demands using the primary design parameters. Additionally, a reliability-based methodology for establishing the load and resistance factors for the force-controlled (braced frame) members is formulated. A key departure from previously developed capacity design approaches is the development of an explicit link between the effect of the failure of the force-controlled components and system level performance limit states (collapse and post-earthquake structural safety). The results from a case study applied to 3-, 6- and 9-story building cases show that the effect of force-controlled components is more significant for the collapse limit state compared to post-earthquake structural safety. Also, even when the resistance to load factor ratio ( / ) is increased to 1.8, the 50-year collapse probability remained below the 1% threshold prescribed by current building codes. The effect of record-to-record and modeling uncertainty on the seismic response and performance assessment of CRSBFs is also studied. The results showed that the impact of modeling uncertainty on seismic performance increases with the building height. To enable practitioners to estimate the service life costs of potential designs, surrogate models are developed to assess earthquake-induced life cycle economic loss and environmental impacts. The effectiveness of the surrogate models is demonstrated by evaluating their accuracy on "unseen" (i.e., not used in the development of the surrogate models) designs.

Book excerpt: A new approach to seismic assessment of structures called endurance time method (ETM) is developed. ETM is a dynamic analysis procedure in which intensifying dynamic excitations are used as the loading function. ETM provides many unique benefits in seismic assessment and design of structures and is a response history-based procedure. ETM considerably reduces the computational effort needed in typical response history analyses. Conceptual simplicity makes ETM a great tool for preliminary response history analysis of almost any dynamic structural system. Most important areas of application of ETM are in the fields of seismic design optimization, value-based seismic design, and experimental studies. This book is aimed to serve as a coherent source of information for students, engineers, and researchers who want to familiarize themselves with the concepts and put the concepts into practice.

Book excerpt: Performance-based Earthquake Engineering has emerged before the turn of the century as the most important development in the field of Earthquake Engineering during the last three decades. It has since then started penetrating codes and standards on seismic assessment and retrofitting and making headway towards seismic design standards for new structures as well. The US have been a leader in Performance-based Earthquake Engineering, but also Europe is a major contributor. Two Workshops on Performance-based Earthquake Engineering, held in Bled (Slovenia) in 1997 and 2004 are considered as milestones. The ACES Workshop in Corfu (Greece) of July 2009 builds on them, attracting as contributors world-leaders in Performance-based Earthquake Engineering from North America, Europe and the Pacific rim (Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, China). It covers the entire scope of Performance-based Earthquake Engineering: Ground motions for performance-based earthquake engineering; Methodologies for Performance-based seismic design and retrofitting; Implementation of Performance-based seismic design and retrofitting; and Advanced seismic testing for performance-based earthquake engineering. Audience: This volume will be of interest to scientists and advanced practitioners in structural earthquake engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, engineering seismology, and experimental dynamics.
