This study investigated the use of natural sand in the fine and coarse gradations for the surface course mixtures. The mixtures were designed using the SUPERPAVE mix design approach and were evaluated for their performance in terms of resistance to rutting, fatigue and moisture damage. In addition, the accelerated performance of these mixtures was also evaluated using the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer.

Book excerpt: A Superpave asphalt mixture with 4.75-mm nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS) is a promising, low-cost pavement preservation treatment for agencies such as the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). The objective of this research study is to develop an optimized 4.75-mm NMAS Superpave mixture in Kansas. In addition, the study evaluated the residual tack coat application rate for the 4.75-mm NMAS mix overlay. Two, hot-in-place recycling (HIPR) projects in Kansas, on US-160 and K-25, were overlaid with a 15- to 19-mm thick layer of 4.75-mm NMAS Superpave mixture in 2007. The field tack coat application rate was measured during construction. Cores were collected from each test section for Hamburg wheel tracking device (HWTD) and laboratory bond tests performed after construction and after one year in service. Test results showed no significant effect of the tack coat application rate on the rutting performance of rehabilitated pavements. The number of wheel passes to rutting failure observed during the HWTD test was dependent on the aggregate source as well as on in-place density of the cores. Laboratory pull-off tests showed that most cores were fully bonded at the interface of the 4.75-mm NMAS overlay and the HIPR layer, regardless of the tack application rate. The failure mode during pull-off tests at the HMA interface was highly dependent on the aggregate source and mix design of the existing layer material. This study also confirmed that overlay construction with a high tack coat application rate may result in bond failure at the HMA interface. Twelve different 4.75-mm NMAS mix designs were developed using materials from the aforementioned but two binder grades and three different percentages of natural (river) sand. Laboratory performance tests were conducted to assess mixture performance. Results show that rutting and moisture damage potential in the laboratory depend on aggregate type irrespective of binder grade. Anti-stripping agent affects moisture sensitivity test results. Fatigue performance is significantly influenced by river sand content and binder grade. Finally, an optimized 4.75-mm NMAS mixture design was developed and verified based on statistical analysis of performance data.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement construction, maintenance, design, and materials engineers; pavement contractors; and others interested in the use of open-graded friction course (OGFC) mixes. It describes the current state of the practice on the use of OGFC mixes, including information regarding design, materials, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation strategies. Alternative treatments to traditional OGFC are also identified and discussed. Information was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search to gather additional insight into North American and European practices. This TRB report describes the recent performance of North American OGFC mixes and European porous asphalt by identifying benefits and stress indicators. A new generation of OGFC mixes has evolved over the last 5 years with changes that have been reported to dramatically improve performance. This synthesis describes new materials and design methods being used, as well as the applicability of the new generation of open-graded mixtures to North American use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unexpected performance of coarse-graded and crushed stone mixtures when compared to fine-graded and partially crushed gravel mixtures at WesTrack led to an examination of consensus aggregate properties for all mixtures used. These properties did not explain the differences in performance, but an analysis of mixture sensitivity to asphalt content and percent passing the 0.075 mm sieve did highlight the potential for substantial changes in volumetrics in terms of air voids for coarse-graded Superpave mixtures. The rutting performance of both coarse and fine-graded mixtures was sensitive to asphalt content, with coarse-graded mixtures highly sensitive to decreases in asphalt content and both types of mixtures sensitive to increases in asphalt content. Increased variability in aggregate gradation for the coarse-graded mixture coupled with this sensitivity may explain the unexpected performance. Based on these results, a sensitivity analysis was recommended for inclusion in the Superpave mix design process. Rutting performance models also indicated that volumetrics and aggregate properties related to gradation significantly contribute to performance.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Two gradation specifications were developed as part of the Superior Performing Pavement Program in 1993. They are known as coarse and fine gradations respectively. It was recommended to use the coarse gradation in order to achieve better rutting resistance, however many researchers believe that either of the two gradations will do well in rutting resistance if they are properly designed and constructed. This research focuses on evaluating the rut resistance of a fine-graded mixture, as compared to a coarse-graded mixture in use in the State of Florida. Both field and laboratory evaluation methods were used.

Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superpave was introduced in 1994, as a result of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and was aimed at addressing the performance of asphalt concrete pavements. This SHRP study recommended new specifications for asphalt mixture designs which included performance graded binders, performance related aggregate properties, and new principles for volumetric mix designs. With these new mix design principles, it was evident that Superpave mix designs would contain more coarse aggregates and less natural sands. With the introduction of Superpave, many in the Asphalt industry feared that the recommended coarse structured mixes would be very difficult to compact and highly permeable compared to the Marshall mixes they were replacing. In North Carolina, we have seen instances where this theory was proven true and have witnessed coarse Superpave mixes that have been permeable. In general, the cause of this permeability may be due to increased voids caused by improper compaction that results from the coarse nature of the designs, which in turn creates interconnected voids that will transmit water through the pavement. A remedy to the permeability problem may be a new test that can determine in the laboratory if certain mixes are susceptible to permeability. This test is discussed in this study. The data represented in this study shows the causes of permeability in a small group of pavements that were sampled and should not be misinterpreted to imply that this small number of distressed pavements is indicative of all Superpave mixes. The selected mixes are a cross section of surface mixes used across the State of North Carolina. The permeability test method discussed in this study is a very simple procedure and the data presented show that this test can be used for predicting field permeability of Superpave surface mixtures. The coarse graded mixes performed poorly in the lab permeability tests and the fine graded mixes proved to be very impermeable. This study also eval.

Book excerpt: Laboratory fatigue testing was performed on six Superpave HMA mixtures in use at the Virginia Smart Road. Evaluation of the applied strain and resulting fatigue life was performed to fit regressions to predict the fatigue performance of each mixture. Differences in fatigue performance due to field and laboratory production and compaction methods were investigated. Also, in-situ mixtures were compared to mixtures produced accurately from the job mix formula to determine if changes occurring between the laboratory and batch plant significantly affected fatigue life. Results from the fatigue evaluation allowed verification of several hypotheses related to mixture production and compaction and fatigue performance. It was determined that location within the pavement surface, such as inner or outer wheelpath or center-of-lane, did not significantly affect laboratory fatigue test results, although the location will have significant effects on in-situ fatigue life. Also the orientation of samples cut from an in-situ pavement (parallel or perpendicular to the direction of traffic) had only a minor effect on the laboratory fatigue life, because the variability inherent in the pavement due to material variability is greater than the variability induced by compaction. Fatigue life of laboratory-compacted samples was found to be greater than fatigue life of field-compacted samples; additionally, the variability of the laboratory compacted mixture was found to be less than that of the field-compacted samples. However, it was also found that batch-plant production significantly reduces specimen variability as compared to small-batch laboratory production when the same laboratory compaction is used on both specimen sets. Finally, for Smart Road mixtures produced according to the job mix formula, the use of polymer-modified binder or stone matrix asphalt was shown to increase the expected fatigue life. However, results for all mixes indicated that fatigue resistance rankings might change depending on the applied strain level. This study contributes to the understanding of the factors involved in fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures. Considering that approximately 95% of Virginia's interstate and primary roadways incorporate asphalt surface mixtures, and that fatigue is a leading cause of deterioration, gains in the understanding of fatigue processes and prevention have great potential payoff by improving both the mixture and pavement design practices.
