Book excerpt: This research project covered a wide range of activities that allowed researchers to understand the relationship between stability, pavement distress, and recycled portland cement concrete (RPCC) subbase aggregate materials. Detailed laboratory and field tests, including pavement distress surveys, were conducted at 26 sites in Iowa. Findings show that specific gravities of RPCC are lower than those of crushed limestone. RPCC aggregate material varies from poorly or well-graded sand to gravel. A modified Micro-Deval test procedure showed that abrasion losses of virgin aggregate materials were within the maximum Micro-Deval abrasion loss of 30% recommended by ASTM D6028-06. Micro-Deval abrasion loss of RPCC aggregate materials, however were much higher than those of virgin materials and exceeded 30% loss. Modulus of elasticity of RPCC subbase materials is high but variable. RPCC subbase layers normally have low permeability. The pavement surfaces for both virgin and RPCC subbase across Iowa were evaluated to fulfill the objectives of this study related to field evaluation. Visual distress surveys were conducted to gather the detailed current pavement condition information including the type, extent, and severity of the pavement distresses. The historical pavement condition information for the surveyed field sections was extracted from the Iowa DOT's Pavement Management Information System (PMIS). The current surface condition of existing field pavements with RPCC subbase was compared with the virgin aggregate subbase sections using two different approaches. The changes in pavement condition indices (PCI and IRI) with time for both types of pavements (subbases) were compared.

Book excerpt: Paper 1: This study covers a condition survey in Indiana of 328.5 mi. of rigid pavements constructed with granular bases. Paper 2: All new concrete pavement in Illinois has been placed on granular subbase where the natural soil is fine-grained and heavy truck traffic is expected. The lower cost of constructing the trenched undrained subbase was a deciding factor in the preference shown for this type of subbase.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main issue associated with this research is if cheaper alternatives can be configured for subbase construction. Subbase layers have certain functions that need to be fulfilled in order to assure adequate pavement performance. One key aspect is resistance to erosion, and assessment of each of these functions relative to different alternatives is key to understanding the capability of different alternatives to perform adequately. In this respect, this project was poised to examine the design assumptions associated with each alternative and provide design recommendations accordingly to include test methods and material specifications. This report describes some of the work accomplished by summarizing data on subbase performance and testing relative to concrete pavement subbase and subgrade erosion but mainly addresses guidelines for concrete pavement subbase design. Findings from field investigations are discussed to identify factors associated with erosion. An approach to mechanistically consider the erosion process was introduced and review of current design procedures was conducted to reveal how they address erosion. This review was extended to include erosion models described in the literature as a means to shed light on the relationship between measurable material properties and performance. Additionally, past and current design procedures relative to erosion were reviewed in terms of test methods, erosion models, and their utility to characterize subbase materials with respect to erosion resistance. With this information, a new test configuration was devised that uses a rapid tri-axial test and a Hamburg wheel-tracking device for evaluating erodibility with respect to the subbase type and degree of stabilization (cement content). Test devices, procedures, and results are explained and summarized for application in mechanistic design processes. A proposed erosion model was validated by comparing erosion predictions to erosion results. Several computer program analyses were conducted to assess the design and performance implications of different subbases alternatives. Guidelines are p rovided to promote economical and sustainable design of concrete pavement subbases.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Construction Materials: Recycled Aggregate focuses on the massive systematic need that is necessary to encourage the uptake of recycled and secondary materials (RSM) in the construction industry. This book is the fifth and the last of the series on sustainable construction materials and like the previous four, it is also different to the norm. Its uniqueness lies in using the newly developed, Analytical Systemisation Method, in building the data-matrix sourced from 1413 publications, contributed by 2213 authors from 965 institutions in 67 countries, from 1977 to 2018, on the subject of recycled aggregate as a construction material, and systematically analysing, evaluating and modelling this information for use of the material as an aggregate concrete and mortar, geotechnics and road pavement applications. Environmental issues, case studies and standards are also discussed. The work establishes what is already known and can be used to further progress the use of sustainable construction materials. It can also help to avoid repetitive research and save valuable resources. The book is structured in an incisive and easy to digest manner and is particularly suited for researchers, academics, design engineers, specifiers, contractors, and government bodies dealing with construction works. - Provides an exhaustive and comprehensively organized list of globally-based published literature spanning 5000 references - Offers an analysis, evaluation, repackaging and modeling of existing knowledge that encourages more responsible use of waste materials - Provides a wealth of knowledge for use in many sectors relating to the construction profession, including academia, research, practice and adoption of RSM

Book excerpt: This report presents the analysis conducted on relating pavement performance or response measures and design considerations to specific pavement layers utilizing data contained in the Long-Term Pavement Performance Program National Information Management System. The goal of this research activity was to enhance implementation and use of the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide through improved materials characterizations. Specifically, the focus of this research activity was to identify the differences that exist between laboratory measured and backcalculated resilient moduli; determine the applicability of the C values, drainage coefficients, and relative damage factors that are included in the Design Guide; and provide procedures to adequately consider the seasonal variation of material properties as related to flexible pavement designs. Based on these results, design pamphlets have been prepared in support of the AASHTO Design Guide. These design pamphlets are documented and included in other reports. The results reported here form the basis and background for those design pamphlets.

Book excerpt: With recent focus on sustainable construction practices and the ever-increasing transportation costs and scarcity of natural resources, integration of large-size and marginally acceptable aggregates and recycled materials (e.g., reclaimed asphalt pavement [RAP]) with current construction specifications is becoming imperative. As an incentive, the Illinois Department of Transportation has been using large-size rocks, popularly known as aggregate subgrade. However, adequate scientific knowledge about material performance is largely unknown. To this end, a research study was undertaken at the Illinois Center for Transportation to evaluate the adequacy and field performances of IDOT's new aggregate subgrade specifications. A state-of-the-art image analysis technique was used to characterize the size and shape as well as the texture and angularity properties of selected aggregate subgrade materials. For field evaluation, 24 combinations of pavements were constructed over subgrade with controlled low immediate bearing value (IBV) or unsoaked California bearing ratio (CBR) strength properties. Construction quality control was achieved through inplace density and modulus measurements on aggregate layers using a nuclear gauge, lightweight deflectometer, and soil stiffness gauges. Periodic rut measurements were carried out on the pavement surface throughout the accelerated loading process using an Accelerated Transportation Loading Assembly (ATLAS). Contributions of the underlying pavement layers to the total rut accumulation were evaluated through innovative applications of groundpenetrating radar (GPR), a lightweight variable-energy penetrometer device, known as the PANDA, and a geoendoscopy probe. Layer intermixing and material migration at the aggregate subgrade-subgrade interface improved the foundation layer stiffness properties and pavement performance results significantly. RAPcapped construction platforms consistently exhibited a higher magnitude of rutting. Performances of flexible pavement sections were governed by the as-constructed HMA thicknesses, which varied considerably during the paver operation because of RAP subbase sinkage and the weak subgrade. Adequate validation and potential revisions to current IDOT specifications were recommended.
