Book excerpt: Properties of cement-stabilized soils were interrelated, and the performance of field sections previously tested (1963-1964) at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Vicksburg, Mississippi, was evaluated for the purposes of determining the validity of existing theory for prediction of pavement behavior and developing criteria and procedure for designing pavements containing soil layers stabilized with small amounts of cement. Field test sections of three different thicknesses were constructed of Vicksburg silty clay stabilized with 3%, 6%, and 10% cement contents on a heavy clay subgrade prepared to CBR values of 4 and 10, and tested under 10,000, 25,000, and 50,000-pound single-wheel loads. A failure criterion was defined according to rut depth, and the equivalency of different wheel loads (in terms of damage caused to the pavement) was determined. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwest States Accelerated Pavement Testing Pooled Fund Program, financed by the highway departments of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska, has supported an accelerated pavement testing (APT) project to compare the performance of stabilized clayey embankment soil when Portland cement, fly ash, lime and a commercial product were used as stabilizing agents. The project aimed to improve the practices related to the design of flexible pavements when the top of the subgrade is improved by chemical stabilization. The experiments were conducted at the Civil Infrastructure Systems Laboratory (CISL) of Kansas State University. The test program consisted of constructing four flexible pavement structures and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated loading test. The study indicated that cement and lime are the most effective stabilizers for the studied soil. These stabilizers resulted in lower vertical compressive stresses at the top of the subgrade and lower rut depth at the pavement surface than the fly ash-treated soil. After more than two million axle load repetitions, the pavement with cement stabilized embankment soil exhibited much less surface cracking than the pavement with fly-ash stabilized embankment. The commercial product proved not to be effective in stabilizing the non-sulfate clayey soil used in this experiment, when the embankment is constructed at the same moisture content and compaction level as for the other three chemicals. The unconfined compression strength measured on laboratory prepared samples of soil stabilized with the commercial chemical compound was very similar to that of the untreated soil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program of construction and performance evaluation of seven Virginia flexible pavements containing at least some experimental features is reported. The objective of the program is to evaluate the performance of the pavements incorporating new or timely design concepts and to assess the flexibility of these concepts for further use. Among the major findings of the study to this point are the following. 1. Pavements having equivalent design thickness indices are not necessarily equivalent in construction cost or in early structural strength, 2. Very early deflection tests do not give good indications of the ultimate strength characteristics of pavements having cement stabilized layers. Full-depth asphaltic concrete pavements can give excellent performance in very poor soil areas, especially when the design is modified through the provision of a cement stabilized subgrade. An unstabilized sandwich layer placed between a cement stabilized layer and asphaltic concrete layers is effective in significantly delaying the reflection of transverse cracking from the cement stabilized layer through the asphaltic concrete layers. There is some evidence that reflective cracks may develop after many years under heavy truck traffic. Such a sandwich layer is weaker than either of the two layers it contacts and can cause a net reduction in pavement strength as compared with the situation where the weaker layer is on the bottom. Transverse shrinkage cracks reflect from a cement treated stone subbase through 3 inches (75 mm) of bituminous concrete in as little as 18 months and through 7 inches (175 mm) of bituminous concrete in less than 5 years. Cement treatment of stone subbases can be omitted in passing lanes with no detriment to performance. (This may not be true with traffic volumes near capacity because of the change in distribution of truck usage as that point is approached.
