Book excerpt: Routing is the network-layer function that selects the paths that data packets travel from a source to a destination in a computer communication network. This thesis is on distributed adaptive routing algorithms for large packet-switched networks. A new type of routing algorithms for computer networks, the link-vector algorithm (LVA) is introduced. LVAs use selective dissemination of topology information. Each router running an maintains a subset of the topology that corresponds to adjacent links and those links used by its neighbor routers in their preferred paths to known destinations. Based on that subset of topology information, the router derives its own preferred paths and communicates the corresponding link-state information to its neighbors. An update message contains a vector of updates; each such update specifies a link and its parameters. LVAs can be used for different types of routing policies. LVAs are shown to have better performance than the ideal link-state algorithm based on flooding and the distributed Bellman-Ford algorithm.

Book excerpt: In large measure the traditional concern of communications engineers has been the conveyance of voice signals. The most prominent example is the telephone network, in which the techniques used for transmission multiplex ing and switching have been designed for voice signals. However, one of the many effects of computers has been the growing volume of the sort of traffic that flows in networks composed of user terminals, processors, and peripherals. The characteristics of this data traffic and the associated perfor mance requirements are quite different from those of voice traffic. These differences, coupled with burgeoning digital technology, have engendered a whole new set of approaches to multiplexing and switching this traffic. The new techniques are the province of what has been loosely called computer communications networks. The subject of this book is the mathematical modeling and analysis of computer communications networks, that is to say, the multiplexing and switching techniques that have been developed for data traffic. The basis for many of the models that we shall consider is queueing theory, although a number of other disciplines are drawn on as well. The level at which this material is covered is that of a first-year graduate course. It is assumed that at the outset the student has had a good undergraduate course in probability and random processes of the sort that are more and more common among electrical engineering and computer science departments.

Book excerpt: Two distributed routing procedures based upon the Yen shortest path algorithm are developed for application in a packet-switched communications network. The algorithm uses a unique method in calculating shortest paths based upon the time of arrival of update messages. The first routing procedures uses a proposed 'combination' link weight function having parameters involving both current link queue size and recent history of link utilization. Performance of this procedure is analyzed under a variety of network conditions using computer simulation. A comparison study is done with both a least hop routing protocol and a multiple path static routing protocol. The second routing procedure has a hierarchical structure which offers substantial reductions in routing traffic and memory requirements over the first version when implemented in large networks. The major conclusion is that these routing procedures exhibit robust operating characteristics which are almost optimal in simple situations. (Author).

Book excerpt: As the dividing line between traditional computing science and telecommunications quickly becomes blurred or disappears in today's rapidly changing environment, there is an increasing need for computer professionals to possess knowledge of telecommunications principles. Telecommunications and Networking presents a comprehensive overview of the interaction and relationship between telecommunications and data processing. The book's early chapters cover basic telecommunications vocabulary, common nomenclature, telecommunications fundamentals, as well as the important relationships among coding, error detection and correction, and noise. Later chapters discuss such topics as switching, timing, topological structures, routing algorithms, and teleprocessing. Other topics covered in detail include specific concerns inherent to computer communications, such as protocols, error detection and correction, network monitoring and security, and system validation. System designers and programmers can no longer be effective simply by understanding the tradeoffs between hardware and software. Telecommunications and Networking provides both computing professionals and students the fundamental computer communications concepts necessary to function in today's computer industry.

Book excerpt: Network routing can be broadly categorized into Internet routing, PSTN routing, and telecommunication transport network routing. This book systematically considers these routing paradigms, as well as their interoperability. The authors discuss how algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment impact these approaches. A unique feature of the book is consideration of both macro-state and micro-state in routing; that is, how routing is accomplished at the level of networks and how routers or switches are designed to enable efficient routing. In reading this book, one will learn about 1) the evolution of network routing, 2) the role of IP and E.164 addressing in routing, 3) the impact on router and switching architectures and their design, 4) deployment of network routing protocols, 5) the role of traffic engineering in routing, and 6) lessons learned from implementation and operational experience. This book explores the strengths and weaknesses that should be considered during deployment of future routing schemes as well as actual implementation of these schemes. It allows the reader to understand how different routing strategies work and are employed and the connection between them. This is accomplished in part by the authors' use of numerous real-world examples to bring the material alive. Bridges the gap between theory and practice in network routing, including the fine points of implementation and operational experience Routing in a multitude of technologies discussed in practical detail, including, IP/MPLS, PSTN, and optical networking Routing protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP presented in detail A detailed coverage of various router and switch architectures A comprehensive discussion about algorithms on IP-lookup and packet classification Accessible to a wide audience due to its vendor-neutral approach

Book excerpt: This is a book about the bricks and mortar out of which are built those edifices that so well characterize late twentieth century industrial society networks of computers and terminals. Such computer networks are playing an increasing role in our daily lives, somewhat indirectly up to now as the hidden servants of banks, retail credit bureaus, airline reservation offices, and so forth, but soon they will become more visible as they enter our offices and homes and directly become part of our work, entertainment, and daily living. The study of how computer networks work is a combined study of communication theory and computer science, two disciplines appearing to have very little in common. The modern communication scientist wishing to work in this area finds himself in suddenly unfamiliar territory. It is no longer sufficient for him to think of transmission, modulation, noise immun ity, error bounds, and other abstractions of a single communication link; he is dealing now with a topologically complex interconnection of such links. And what is more striking, solving the problems of getting the signal from one point to another is just the beginning of the communication process. The communication must be in the right form to be routed properly, to be handled without congestion, and to be understood at the right points in the network. The communication scientist suddenly finds himself charged with responsibility for such things as code and format conversions, addressing, flow control, and other abstractions of a new and challenging kind.

Book excerpt: This volume contains revised versions of the 23 regular papers presented at the First International Workshop on Parallel Computer Routing and Communication (PCRCW '94), held in Seattle, Washington in May 1994. Routing for parallel computer communication has recently experienced almost explosive activity: ever increasing processor speeds are placing greater demands on interprocessor communication, while technological advances offer new capabilities to respond to those demands. The contributions from industry and academia cover all areas, from details of hardware design to proofs of theoretical results. There are also many papers dealing with the performance of various adaptive routing schemes, new network topologies, network interfaces, and fault-tolerant issues.

Book excerpt: This book provides a single-source reference to routing algorithms for Networks-on-Chip (NoCs), as well as in-depth discussions of advanced solutions applied to current and next generation, many core NoC-based Systems-on-Chip (SoCs). After a basic introduction to the NoC design paradigm and architectures, routing algorithms for NoC architectures are presented and discussed at all abstraction levels, from the algorithmic level to actual implementation. Coverage emphasizes the role played by the routing algorithm and is organized around key problems affecting current and next generation, many-core SoCs. A selection of routing algorithms is included, specifically designed to address key issues faced by designers in the ultra-deep sub-micron (UDSM) era, including performance improvement, power, energy, and thermal issues, fault tolerance and reliability.
