For this reason, robust radiation models are currently being implemented into MFiX - a CFD software package that specializes in simulating multiphase flows. It is still necessary however to quantify the error of these models by means of comparison with exact solutions, yet traditional solution methods for the complex radiative transfer equation (RTE) are computationally infeasible. Therefore, the objective of this study is to derive and implement an appropriate statistical method, known as the photon Monte Carlo (PMC) method, for the validation of radiative heat transfer calculations. Through a series of increasingly complex test cases, the PMC algorithm was verified and ultimately integrated into the MFiX framework. This work will allow for the implemented PMC algorithm to be used as a high-fidelity radiation solver in MFiX or to validate other MFiX radiation models.

Book excerpt: Recently, the appearance of very large (3-10M gate) FPGAs with embedded arithmetic units has opened the door to the possibility of floating point computation on these devices. While previous researchers have described peak performance or kernel matrix operations, there is as yet little experience with mapping an application-specific floating point pipeline onto FPGAs. In this work, we port a supercomputer application benchmark onto Xilinx Virtex II and II Pro FPGAs and compare performance with comparable microprocessor implementation. Our results show that this application-specific pipeline, with 12 multiply, 10 add/subtract, one divide, and two compare modules of single precision floating point data type, shows speedup of 1.6x-1.7x. We analyze the trade-offs between hardware and software 'sweet spots' to characterize the algorithms that will perform well on current and future FPGA architectures.

Book excerpt: In this study, the application of a Monte Carlo method (MCM) for radiative heat transfer in three-dimensional rectangular enclosures was investigated. The study covers the development of the method from simple surface exchange problems to enclosure problems containing absorbing, emitting and isotropically/anisotropically scattering medium. The accuracy of the MCM was first evaluated by applying the method to cubical enclosure problems. The first one of the cubical enclosure problems was prediction of radiative heat flux vector in a cubical enclosure containing purely, isotropically and anisotropically scattering medium with non-symmetric boundary conditions. Then, the prediction of radiative heat flux vector in an enclosure containing absorbing, emitting, isotropically and anisotropically scattering medium with symmetric boundary conditions was evaluated. The predicted solutions were compared with the solutions of method of lines solution (MOL) of discrete ordinates method (DOM). The method was then applied to predict the incident heat fluxes on the freeboard walls of a bubbling fluidized bed combustor, and the solutions were compared with those of MOL of DOM and experimental measurements. Comparisons show that MCM provides accurate and computationally efficient solutions for modelling of radiative heat transfer in 3-D rectangular enclosures containing absorbing, emitting and scattering media with isotropic and anisotropic scattering properties.
