Book excerpt: To assess performance on individual Table VIII gunnery engagements, the first run scores of 109 tank crews from three U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG) armor battalions were averaged and then ordinarily ranked for difficulty. For all three battalions, three of the four engagements found to have the lowest average scores (highest difficulty rankings) required machine gun (coax or Caliber .50) employment either alone or in combination with the main gun. In the remaining engagement of this foursome, crews were required to fire at multiple targets with the main gun using the gunner's auxiliary sight. Two of the three engagements found to have the highest average scores (lowest difficulty rankings) involved presentation of only a single target. These results can be used by ARNG armor trainers to help maximize the payoff from their training time investment by focusing on the engagements found to be the most difficult, thereby enhancing the probability of first-run crew qualification on Table VIII. Scores are added as each engagement is fired and the resulting sum is compared to tabular formatted cutoff scores established to support accurate qualification predictions. Adherence to this strategy will help Active Army armor unit commanders to maximize the efficiency of tank gunnery evaluation by reducing the number of first-run engagements fired, as well as the range time and operational tempo (OPTEMPO) resources spent in doing so, by roughly 20% without sacrificing the purpose and intent of the crew-level gunnery certification process."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: The research evaluated the effects of mental ability on the gunnery performance of 19K One Station Unit Training (OSUT) soldiers. Five hundred forty-seven soldiers were given a 35-engagement tank gunnery test on the high- fidelity Institutional-Conduct of Fire Trainer (I-COFT). The I-COFT test included offensive and defensive engagements fired in normal and degraded operational modes. The primary analysis compared speed and accuracy performance as a function of mental category as derived from General Technical (GT) scores. The test scores were also used a parameter estimates in a soldier performance model based on Lanchester-type combat attrition models. OSUT soldiers with higher mental ability were faster and more accurate on the I-COFT test than were soldiers with lower mental ability. Mental category I & II soldiers hit 14% more targets than category IV soldiers and were 2 seconds faster. The effects of mental ability were relatively the same for both normal and degraded mode exercises. Analyses based on the soldier performance model indicated that category IV soldiers performed at 73% of category I & II soldiers. This course was recently revised to increase the threat representation of the qualification course. As a first step in the development of such a program, an analysis of the performance requirements of the revised Table VIII was conducted. The critical characteristic of Table VIII is multi-target engagements. This firing table is defined by USAREUR Reg 350-704 (Draft of 10 May 1976 is the current basis of analysis). The training to be designed is to qualify crews on this table. Table VIII stresses both speed and accuracy of target engagement, but does not prescribe method (except for safety and minimal administrative requirements). It is thus a performance, rather than process specification.

Book excerpt: This investigation reports the development of a target engagement reduction methodology that supports resource-efficient, live-fire gunnery evaluation on Tank Table VIII (TTVIII), the intermediate-level tank crew gunnery certification exercise. Through a series of multiple regression analyses, it was determined that TTVIII can be reduced from its current 16 engagements to 7 engagements. Scores on these 7 engagements can be used to predict 10-engagement-based TTVIII total scores with greater than 85% predictive accuracy. For Army National Guard (ARNG) units, the 7 engagements can be selected randomly. For Active Component (AC) units, however, the predictive subset must consist of specific engagements. For the ARNG, subsets consisting of as few as two engagements can be used to identify tank crews with little chance of achieving first-run qualification (Q1), and subsets consisting of as few as four engagements can be used to identify crews with a high probability of firing Q1. Both predictions can be made with 95% accuracy. For both the ARNG and AC, short-cut scoring models allowed the prediction of 10-engagement-based TTVIII total scores, based on subsets of any size, with calculational ease. It was concluded that more resource-efficient live-fire tank gunnery evaluation is possible in both the ARNG and AC without sacrificing evaluative validity. The magnitude of resource savings to be anticipated from use of the recommended resource-efficient methods was estimated.
