Book excerpt: Providing high-quality streaming over peer-to-peer (P2P) systems faces multiple challenges such as limited upload capacity of peers and high heterogeneity of receivers in terms of download bandwidth and screen resolutions. In this thesis, we present the design of a P2P live streaming system that uses scalable video coding (SVC) as well as network coding. The proposed design enables flexible customization of video streams to support heterogeneous receivers, highly utilizes upload bandwidth of peers, and quickly adapts to network and peer dynamics. The proposed design is simple and modular. Therefore, other P2P streaming systems could also benefit from various components of the proposed design to improve their performance. We conduct an extensive quantitative analysis to demonstrate the expected performance gain from the proposed design.

Book Synopsis On Large-scale Peer-to-peer Streaming Systems by : Chen Feng

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming has recently received much research attention, with successful commercial systems showing its viability in the Internet. Despite the remarkable popularity in real-world systems, the fundamental properties and limitations are not yet well understood from a theoretical perspective, as there exists a significant gap between the fundamental limits and the performance achieved in practice. In this thesis, we seek to provide an in-depth analytical understanding of fundamental properties and limitations of P2P streaming systems, with a particular spotlight on the performance gap. We first identify the major problem in existing streaming protocols and show that this problem accounts for most of the gap separating the actual and optimal performances of the streaming systems. We then propose a remedy based on network coding to address this problem and show that the gap to the fundamental limits can be significantly reduced.

Book Synopsis Low-latency and Robust Peer-to-peer Video Streaming by : JeongHun Noh
Download or read book Low-latency and Robust Peer-to-peer Video Streaming written by JeongHun Noh and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have emerged as a promising and cost-effective transport solution for streaming video to a group of users in the Internet. In the P2P architecture, users not only consume video, but also forward it to other users. Thus, P2P systems scale better than client-server systems as users bring resources to the system. The challenge is to achieve low-latency and robust video dissemination by overcoming a number of adversarial aspects and challenges -- peer dynamics, heterogeneous uplink bandwidth of peers, heterogeneous hardware and capabilities of peers, and peer-wise connection restrictions due to NATs/firewalls. This dissertation presents Stanford Peer-to-Peer Multicast (SPPM), a P2P video streaming system. SPPM is designed to achieve low-latency and robust streaming by constructing an overlay of multiple complementary trees and dynamically rearranging the position of peers by Active Overlay Management in a distributed fashion. Next, we extend SPPM for providing playback control to users by time-shifted streaming. To perform time-shifted streaming, peers store past portions of video and forward them to other users when requested, thereby reducing server load. To further alleviate server load, we propose fast prefetching, by which peers can disseminate content quickly. Finally, we present a way to accommodate mobile users. Video transcoding is often required to adapt video for the mobile users. We propose interleaved distributed transcoding (IDT), which allows a video stream to be transcoded at multiple peers that are more capable than mobile users. IDT is shown not only to reduce computation required at a peer but also to achieve higher error resilience in case of peer failure or packet loss.

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Internet has witnessed a rapid growth in P2P (peer-to-peer) applications, especially, in the live streaming domain. There have been several deployments of largescale industrial level P2P live video systems, e.g., CoolStream, PPLive, Sopcast. Several contemporary measurement studies have verified that thousands of users can simultaneously participate in these systems. Almost all live P2P video systems offer multiple channels (e.g., PPLive can host over 100 channels). It is expected that in near future, live streaming systems with hundreds of user-generated channels will likely have thousands of live channels in total. With such a large number of streaming channels and huge number of participants, there are still some challenging issues needed to be addressed for an efficient P2P live streaming system. This PhD thesis is organized around three such problems related to the P2P live streaming systems. In the first research problem, our focus is on the Dedicated Channels used by a Small numbered Viewers (can be termed as DCSV channels for short) in a multi-channel live streaming system. Usually, these are user generated channels and they suffer adversely from poor channel performance, mainly, due to having a small number of participants. As a result, when a viewer of such a channel explicitly requests for a block of streaming content (commonly referred as a chunk), the probability that the chunk will be available among the existing viewers is less than it would be if the number of viewers was higher in that channel (e.g., viewers in a popular channel). We have proposed HnH (short for Hand-in-Hand), a novel scheme of cross-channel resource sharing, in order to solve the performance problem of DCSV channels due to their small number of viewers. We next develop a discrete-time stochastic model in order to analyze its efficiency. In the second research problem, we focus on the Free riders who only want to download and watch the streaming content from their neighboring peers but are unwilling to upload any content to their neighbors. The presence of free riders impose obstacle to the stability of any live streaming system because of consuming bandwidth from the system without significant contribution. We have investigated the performance of a Live streaming system with and without the presence of a free riders. First, we develop a discrete-time stochastic model and then compare the probability of continuous playback without any free rider and with certain amount of free riders. Next, we introduce a simple incentive mechanism and modify our stochastic model in order to accommodate the incentive mechanism. Then we compare the result of probability of continuous playback with and without having an incentive mechanism. Our work shows that presence of an incentive mechanism improves the overall system performance. In the third research problem, we focus on less motivated peers who are not interested to upload streaming contents to their neighbors if those contents are not from the channels they are watching. The context of this work is related to our first research problem where we have proposed the HnH scheme and for simplicity have considered that all the peers from all participating DCSV channels are motivated to cooperate. However, in practice, some of them may behave selfish and become less motivated to help peers from other channels. In this work, we investigate the performance of a HnH scheme based Live streaming system with and without the presence of less motivated peers. First, we develop a discrete-time stochastic model and then compare the probability of continuous playback without any selfish peer and with certain amount of selfish peers. Next, we introduce a simple incentive mechanism and modify our stochastic model accordingly. Finally, we compare the result of probability of continuous playback with and without incentive mechanism. Our work shows that presence of an incentive mechanism improves the over all system performance due to the fact that less motivated peers are motivated to cooperate more by the improved performance.
