In this process, the spiritual experience of the person is considered as an important component. The aim of the author's present research is to explore the therapist’s perceptions of the role of spirituality in counselling services. This book reports the findings of interviews with counsellors to ascertain the answers to questions such as how comfortable they feel discussing spirituality in therapy and what level of caution they should have in discussing spirituality with the client. Critical examination of the recent edition of APA manual DSM-IV-V code (62.89) is attempted due to its caution to the therapists in dealing with spirituality for proper diagnosis and effective therapy. The findings indicate therapists’ need to include the spirituality of the client in a therapeutic setting for diagnosis and treatment. The findings also emphasise the need for an integrated approach taking into consideration the contextual factors within counselling and similar mental health professions. Implications for practice and theory are discussed. Further themes for research are also proposed.

Book excerpt: Counseling and psychology have experienced a conflicted relationship with the issue of spirituality over the last century. Spirituality is a construct that has been receiving more attention in counseling over the last fifteen to twenty years. More counselors and educators are affirming its place and value in the counseling relationship. Yet, there is a disparity between this and what counselors-in-training are being taught regarding spirituality, its value to clients and counselors, and its role in the counseling relationship. Very little research has been done examining spirituality and its relationship to counseling students level of confidence and competence in their work---their self-efficacy. This study investigated the relationship of perceived spirituality to counseling self-efficacy for graduate counseling students in faith-based and secular institutions. Additionally, the researcher studied the relationship of spirituality and counseling self-efficacy to the following demographic variables: age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status. The results from a sample of 135 students demonstrated a relationship between spirituality and counseling self-efficacy for students in faith-based and secular universities. The four demographic variables studied---age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status---showed a relationship with counseling self-efficacy but not spirituality. Implications for counseling pedagogy and clinical work are offered. Areas of future research are discussed.

Ironically, the field of psychology has largely ignored the spiritual beliefs and experiences that so many people see as central to their well-being. Empirical study of spirituality, along with people's differing perceptions of their relationship to God, is a viable area of study for psychologists. This dissertation examines both spirituality and God image and the relationship between these two constructs using qualitative hermeneutic analysis. Findings showed a difficulty defining spirituality among other themes. Findings also showed that individuals' experiences with God led to more concrete descriptions of Deity, and participants often alluded to a gap between themselves and God that creates dissonance. It was generally easier for participants to describe God than spirituality, and religious concepts were integral to participants' descriptions of both spirituality and God. Implications for psychology and counseling include the limitations of current quantitative measurement of these constructs, the importance of addressing contextual worldviews, and issues relevant to counseling.

Book excerpt: There has been a call for further integration of religion and spirituality into counselor training due to a large percentage of the American population reporting that religion and spirituality are important factors in their lives. Yet this integration seems to rarely occur. Although issues of religion and spirituality are generally seen to be at least somewhat important in clinical practice, training programs have still been slow to integrate these issues into curriculum, practicum training, supervision and research. Attention had been directed toward understanding the integration of, or hesitation to integrate, religion and spirituality into counselor training, but this focus has most often been from the perspective of clinicians or educators, and rarely from the perspective of the counselor trainee. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to explore the counseling psychology student's perspective on integrating religion and spirituality in training, looking specifically at perceived importance of religion and spirituality in training. Factors influencing the perceived levels of importance of students are explored, including religious affiliation, program openness, openness, quest orientation to religion, cognitive orientation toward spirituality and multicultural competence. Results indicated that, for doctoral counseling students, program and personal variables explain a significant portion of the variance in perceived importance of integrating religion and spirituality into counselor training, with quest orientation to religion and cognitive orientation toward spirituality being significant predictors while controlling for organized and non-organized religious activity. Exploratory analyses were also conducted to assess students' training experiences, work with clients, interest in integrating religion and spirituality into training and thoughts about how to integrate religion and spirituality into training. Findings are described in detail and implications and recommendations for future training are discussed.
