This phenomenological study aimed to (a) explore teacher perceptions who have experienced teacher-directed student aggression by students with emotional behavioral disorder (EBD) and (b) investigate how teacher relationships affect student outcomes, school climate, and the emotional demands of the profession within a career technical school. In addition, the study was designed to (a) explore how principals view their efficacy in supporting teachers who experience aggressive outbursts by students with EBD and (b) help students with EBD develop prosocial and problem-solving skills. There has been little research on teacher-directed student aggression (TDSA) and the leadership imperative to support teachers and students with EBD. This study is designed to illuminate the experiences and perceptions of educators who work as classroom ambassadors and school leaders in the face of student aggression to meet and serve the needs of students with EBD. In attending to the complex problem, solutions will be grounded through the lens of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Starratt's ethical leadership paradigm, and Vygotsky's social constructivist theory. The study results were analyzed using Creswell's (2014) seven-step examination process for qualitative research. The overall findings suggest that mitigating TDSA can be positively influenced by the teacher-student relationship (TSR). Overarching themes indicated that teacher commitment, community engagement, ongoing professional development, and the emotional charge significantly contribute to nurturing the TSR with students with EBD. This study has several implications for policy and practice in the educational domain, leadership practice, and higher education.

There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Book excerpt: The intent of this study was to determine how the use of restraints and seclusion and a hands-off approach affect a student’s behavior in terms of the frequency of their physical aggression, non-compliance, and elopement within a full-time emotional support setting. Past research has shown a lack of training and resources to assist educators with managing high-risk behaviors with students classified as individuals with an Emotional Disturbance. In recent years, methods such as seclusion and the use of restraints have received much criticism because of the negative health outcomes these methods may cause. Therefore, more educators are seeking alternative approaches. To provide further clarification on this important issue, the present study investigates student classroom behaviors and how a restraint environment and a restraint-free environment influences student behavior. A nonrandom sample composed of students enrolled in two special education schools in western Pennsylvania was utilized in the study. The population researched within the study included students enrolled within a full-time emotional support program grades K-8 across two approved private schools. This qualitative study utilized existing electronic data sources to determine the relationship between high-risk behaviors including physical aggression, non-compliance, and elopement and methods to address this behavior, including a hands-on vs. hands-off approaches to behavior management. The analysis included frequency comparisons of the high-risk behaviors and demographic data including race, grade, and school year between School A and School B. The results suggested that the type of crisis management approach had a direct impact on student behavior (physical aggression, non-compliance, and elopement) within a full-time emotional support setting. The results support the study hypothesis. In the non-restraint school, there were higher rates of elopement and aggression compared to the restraint school. Additionally, there were no differences among schools in rates of non-compliance.
