Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to describe and evaluate the process of shared governance implementation in a clinic system. Shared governance in healthcare empowers nurses to share in the decision making process, which results in decentralized management and collective accountability. Share governance practices have been present in hospitals since the late 1970's; however, shared governance in ambulatory care clinics has not been well established. The subjects of this project included staff and administrative nurses in a clinic system. The Stakeholder Committee chose what model of shared governance to implement and educated clinic staff. The Index of Professional Nursing Governance (IPNG) measured a shared governance score pre and post implementation of the Clinic Nursing Council (CNC). The CNC met bimonthly for three months during this project to discuss issues and make decisions related to nursing staff. The IPNG scores indicated traditional governance pre and post implementation of the CNC, which is to be expected. The stakeholder committee was beneficial to the initial implementation process and facilitated staff nurse involvement. Shared governance is an evolutionary process that develops empowered nurses and nurse leaders.

Book excerpt: This is the first practical guide for nurses on how to incorporate the knowledge, skills, and tools of Strength-Based Nursing Care (SBC) into everyday practice. The text, based on a model developed by the McGill University Nursing Program, signifies a paradigm shift from a deficit-based model to one that focuses on individual, family, and community strengths as a cornerstone of effective nursing care. The book develops the theoretical foundations underlying SBC, promotes the acquisition of fundamental skills needed for SBC practice, and offers specific strategies, techniques, and tools for identifying strengths and harnessing them to facilitate healing and health. The testimony of 46 nurses demonstrates how SBC can be effectively used in multiple settings across the lifespan.

Book Synopsis Nursing Empowerment and Shared Governance by : Rose L Valentino
Download or read book Nursing Empowerment and Shared Governance written by Rose L Valentino and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Empowerment applies to almost any activity associated with the human experience. The human experience is the core pillar of nursing practice; therefore, it is critical to the application of the art and science of nursing. Empowerment of registered nurses (RN) through professional practice frameworks that are inclusive of shared governance has been proposed to improve quality patient care, increase work effectiveness, improved organizational loyalty, and staff satisfaction. Using Kanter's (1977) theory of structural empowerment, a unit-based practice council was implemented in an ambulatory cancer center, within an organization with an established nursing shared governance model. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact on the staff RNs perceptions of empowerment. Pre and post intervention scores of the 22 RNs who participated using the Conditions for Work Empowerment II survey tool perceived themselves as moderately empowered. There was a statistically significant change in empowerment 8-weeks post-implementation of the shared governance unit-based council as indicated by a p-value of 0.032. These findings are not typical of nursing empowerment measurements in the early stages of shared governance implementation. Recommendations for professional practice and future inquiry are included. Key words: nurse; structural; psychological; empowerment; patient outcomes; shared governance; unit-based councils; Kanter; motivation; engagement; ambulatory; evidence-based practice." -- Abstract.
