In the Southwest, rapid population growth also contributes to the personnel shortage. Paraprofessionals may be a promising group of potential teachers (Smith, 2003; Tillery et al, 2003; White, 2004). Little research exists concerning the perceptions of paraprofessionals about their training and interest in teaching. This study investigated the perceptions of 48 paraprofessionals concerning training experiences in one Southwestern school district. A 46-item Paraprofessional Training Questionnaire sought opinions about preparation, types of training, the alignment of training with the competencies from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and the extent training and length of service were related to a desire to enter the field of education. Responses were analyzed using the SPSS System (2004). Data analysis for closed-ended questions presented response distribution among categories. Descriptive statements were used to clarify, summarize, and interpret the data. Cross tabulation tables assisted in identifying relationships between specific topics and the demographic characteristics of the respondents. Seventy-two percent of paraprofessionals reported being offered training opportunities to assist their work. Eighty-three percent reported the training they received assisted them. Training opportunities varied in topic, but were aligned with the CEC knowledge and skill competencies for special education paraprofessionals. Over 53.2% of the paraprofessionals reported they were Satisfied or Very Satisfied with the training opportunities provided. However, more training opportunities were desired by both beginning and experienced paraprofessionals. Opportunities to meet with supervising teachers varied, as did attendance at training which fostered collaborate relationships with teachers. The relationship between years of service and the desire to become a special education teacher was not statistically significant. However, paraprofessionals with fewer years of service were more interested in becoming teachers. This study provides local and state educational agencies with a framework for designing a supportive and defined infrastructure for implementing competency-based training programs for paraprofessionals, supporting special education teachers, and increasing the pool of qualified special education staff in the schools. Districts may find well-designed paraprofessional training programs could assist in meeting the need for a qualified special education teacher workforce.

Paraprofessional perception of job roles varies greatly within the different educational facilities within the United States. The purpose of this study was to conduct a quantitative analysis on paraprofessionals in the inclusion and self-contained environment. Survey research was chosen for the method of research for this study as the researcher attempted to gain a deeper understanding of the perception of job role of paraprofessionals in the inclusion and self-contained settings. This quantitative study examined, described and interpreted the results of a survey given to paraprofessionals in the inclusion and self-contained settings measuring perception of job role. A total of 98 paraprofessionals from the inclusion and self-contained settings completed a 15 question Likert survey assessing their perception of job role within their setting. Five factors were identified and used as the framework of the study; these were identified as Instructional Role, Liaison Role, Personal Support Role, One-to-One Support Role, and School Support Role. The independent variable in this study was identified as setting; the dependent variable was identified as the paraprofessionals' perception of job role. The results from the survey indicated there is a difference in perception of job role in the area of school support. By identifying areas where a gap exists in perception between selfcontained and inclusion paraprofessionals, strategies related to this gap are provided in hopes of creating a more than productive learning environment for students.

Book excerpt: Educational legislation mandates that all students, including those with disabilities, be provided a free and appropriate public education (IDEA, 2004). Students with low-incidence disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and cognitive disabilities, may have challenging needs that often warrant additional support (i.e. a paraprofessional) to help them access the general education curriculum. As the number of students with disabilities in need of special education services grows, so does the use of paraprofessionals. However, it is known that training for paraprofessionals is very limited. While special education teachers are responsible for supervising the paraprofessional in the classroom, training in supervision for special education teachers is limited to non-existent. Effective supervision and teamwork through communication and shared goals have been shown to be key to a positive working and learning environment (Delvin, 2008; Carnahan et al., 2009; Lynch & Irvine, 2009). However, information about the supervision and teamwork between the supervising special education teacher and the paraprofessional and the subsequent impact on student outcomes is relatively unknown. Using survey methodology, this study aimed to find: (1) the amount of supervision education obtained by special educators, (2) how the amount of supervision education received by special educators related to perceptions of supervisory practices as measured by the Perceptions of Supervision survey (3) if there were significant differences in the perceptions of supervisory practices between paraprofessionals and their supervising special education teacher (SET), (4) what were the reported characteristics that made for successful supervisory practices from SETs' and paraprofessionals' perspectives, and (5) what was most effective and least effective to improving student outcomes (academic and social) with regard to supervision. A total of 107 participants (86 SETs and 21 paraprofessionals) completed the Perceptions of Supervision survey. Results indicated that supervision education is moderately to highly correlated to supervisory practices. There were also significant differences between SETs and paraprofessional in the areas of Evaluation and Performance Monitoring, Task Delegation, and Working Relationship. The selected sample of SETs and paraprofessionals who perceived successful supervisory practices generally matched the sample at large. Communication, feedback, and teamwork were noted as necessary components of supervision that impact student outcomes.

Other support strategies are observed however, the paraprofessional is used most frequently. The use of other support strategies may require additional training and modeling in order to be implemented more effectively.

The primary focus aimed to determine perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the overall quality of pre-service special education certification programs, as well as the perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the aspects of the special education training programs that could be improved in order to increase the overall quality of the certification experience. Six school districts in central and northeastern Pennsylvania participated in the study. Fourteen novice special educators began the online survey composed of demographic, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions, with twelve completing the study. Of the twelve who completed the study, five volunteered to participate in an interview. The study revealed that overall, novice special education teachers felt adequately prepared in the areas of teaching, assessment, professional credentials and employment, professional development, professional colleagues, para-educations, parents and families, and case management; however, there is still room for improvements to be made in pre-service training programs. Data collected from the open-ended and interview questions supported the perception that novice special education teachers felt they may need more training to handle special education paperwork, as well as to provide support in specific areas of special education which they did not feel sufficiently trained, such as life skills support, emotional support or hearing/vision support. Findings also suggested that teacher preparation programs could include more field experiences throughout the duration of the program in a variety of areas and settings.

Most research on paraprofessionals centers on their roles and responsibilities, training, and supervision (Giangreco, Sutter, & Doyle, 2010); however, few studies have explored the influence of paraprofessionals’ perspectives in these areas on their perceived self-efficacy. Although Bandura’s (1994) four sources of self-efficacy have been widely applied to teacher training and development (Tschannen-Moran & Hoy, 2001; Tschannen-Moran & Hoy, 2007), few investigations have ascertained key sources of self-efficacy for paraprofessionals. This study recruited eleven paraprofessionals working for the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) to participate in two focus groups in order to gauge their perceptions on acquired skill level, the quantity and quality of their training, and the supervision and support provided by administrators, teachers, and colleagues. Participant responses revealed four primary themes with the following implications: (1) paraprofessionals desire comprehensive pre-service training and ongoing professional development alongside classroom teachers, (2) classroom teachers are key in paraprofessional success and should provide frequent feedback, (3) school administrators ought to offer development or advancement opportunities and take an active role to supervise paraprofessionals, and (4) paraprofessionals benefit from collegial relationships with peers for guidance and support. Using thematic analysis, the researcher found that verbal persuasion and vicarious experiences were the primary sources influencing paraprofessional success and self-efficacy. In light of the findings, recommendations are made to improve policy and practice.
