Book excerpt: Recent research in the United Kingdom has indicated that many students experience high levels of fear of crime and victimisation on university campuses. Furthermore, research has recognised that positive feelings of safety can be engendered through changes to the physical environment of the campus. However, existing campus safety research focuses predominantly on student vulnerability and relies typically on quantitative methodologies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore areas of research in regards to how students learn about violent crime on university campuses and what level of awareness they hold regarding their personal safety. A combination of databases was used to measure reported rates of violent crime on campus and in the community and these were compared with students' self-perceptions of safety and personal exposure to violence through an online survey distributed to 7,000 students at eight diverse universities throughout the United States. The survey determined that students were more aware of their personal safety than most researchers were giving them credit for. The students were largely dependent upon and trusting in their university to provide them with the information they needed to keep them safe. The university's internal and external communications messages (emails and news media coverage) were a large factor in determining how safe a student felt. Overall, there were few differences in perceptions of safety from demographics (except year of schooling). There was however strong consistencies in perceptions of universities per university, suggesting that the university itself is actually the greatest factor determining students' self-perceptions of safety and that the university's safety perception was largely determined by media coverage. The university proved such a strong factor that it even outweighed a students' personal experience with violence as a key factor in how safe a student felt. I believe that this exploratory study now indicates that future research in the field should focus on universities' safety images and whether or not this is making students feel safe or unsafe.

Book excerpt: Utilizing a mixed methods design, this research examines the ways in which students' perceptions of safety and danger on the college campus vary and do not vary according to gender through the inclusion of three key components. The first focuses on individual perceptions of safety on campus, along with the ways in which students and other members of the campus community police their behaviors within the university setting to ensure that their personal space is not violated as they navigate to and from classes and campus events. This section relies on data from interviews and focus groups with 24 Mason students and staff, along with data from the observations of two open meetings of the Presidential Task Force during April 2011 which centered on issues regarding campus safety. The second component of this study examines the institutional presentation of safety issues and risks to the university community. This section includes a content analysis of five crime and safety documents released during the 2011-2012 academic year to the campus community from the University Police and administration. The final component consists of a nation-wide assessment of safety on college campuses, relying on the crime and security data from two nationally representative datasets including the Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2004-2005 Survey of Campus Law Enforcement Agencies and the U.S. Department of Education's 2006-2007 Campus Safety and Security Data Analysis Cutting Tool. This study builds on previous research on this topic by investigating the gendered (and not gendered) dimensions of fear, in addition to how such fears may operate to restrict women's participation on the university campus and beyond. Further, this research seeks to inform discussions at colleges and universities about how to make students feel safer as they pursue higher education.

Book excerpt: The nexus of social factors, the college experience, and campus safety research represents an empirical gap in the literature surrounding campus safety issues. There is a need for new and creative outlooks on how to approach this culturally sensitive and complex issue(s); a need this research will begin to fulfill. This study intends to ascertain themes regarding the socially constructed reality of campus safety perceptions and concerns, of both male and female students, at a mid-sized Virginia university. A mixed methods procedure was used which included a focus group interview as well as a survey. As Kelly and Torres (2006) wrote, "The perception, just as much as the actual experience was what shaped women students fear for their campus safety" (p. 28), thus it will be the perceptions of the students that will shape their concerns of campus safety. This study will utilize unmatched count technique as the quantitative data collection method and a social constructivist framework to adapt to the sensitive and personal nature of campus safety issues, including sexual assault and interpersonal violence. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data allowed the researcher to determine that students' perceptions could be categorized and defined in a number of ways. There is a clear need for further research on the subject in order to implement culturally appropriate and effective prevention, response and risk reduction strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of student's perception of safety on their college campus has been a recurring problem. Students have been concerned about their safety on campuses because of the crime and violence that have been occurring on college grounds and in surrounding areas. Some of these crimes include the following: rape, robbery, burglary, dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, and gun violence. Some examples of tragedies that have occurred on college grounds include the Virginia Tech tragedy and the rape of Jeanne Clery at Lehigh University. Lawmakers showed their concern of campus safety by creating and enforcing the Jeanne Clery Act. This research employed the use of a survey and face-to-face semi-structured interviews to determine East Carolina University students' perceptions of safety in campus in relation to crime and violence. The classes where the survey was distributed include ART 1910-Art Appreciation and ITEC 3292-Industrial Safety. The objective of this research work was to identify campus safety issues that were of concern to ECU students as well as students' perceptions of campus security services vis a vis the impact of its presence in the campus. It was understood from the results that students generally believe that ECU is a safe campus. Also, the survey and interview results show that few students use the campus security services. The results also show that females view the campus as less safe when compared to males. Freshmen view the campus as less safe when compared to upperclassmen.

Book excerpt: New college students are led to believe that sharing personal information and freely expressing their opinions on social media is expected and their right to free speech. What they fail to understand is that any information they reveal may be used to steal their identity, prevent them from being hired and possibly even get them hurt or killed. It is well known that college is a time for learning, experiencing and growing as a person...but it is little understood that it is also the point in time when students form relationships, political beliefs, attitudes, and habits that will shape them for the rest of their lives. The influence of their friends, teachers and the social and political climate on campus are huge factors in their development - both good and bad. Understanding and learning can help parents assist their sons and daughters avoid future pitfalls and grow up to be successful, productive members of society. There is nothing more important than your personal safety and the safety of your family. Safety has become the highest priority for students, parents, educators and administrators. However, the educational tools and reference guides that contain this essential information for them is lacking since most safety material focuses on the school itself and public safety professionals, not the individual. Today's college students face threats to their personal safety that generations before did not have to deal with. New problems exist in both the digital world and the physical world, and can be harmful or even deadly. Thinking a problem won't happen to you will not make it any less likely. The solution is to be aware of what threats exist, learn how to protect yourself, and know what steps to take should a problem arise to you or around you. You can give your child the most comprehensive resource ever compiled about how to stay safe in both the physical world and digital world. This will help ensure that students are made aware of the various threats to their personal safety that exist both online and offline so they will ultimately be safer during their college years and beyond. The author has worked as an information technology consultant since 1995, a self-defense instructor for over 20 years, and is a former university public safety professional. He is fully qualified to educate students and others based on decades of knowledge that has been distilled into this comprehensive book. Topics include: defining safety concerns safety awareness establishing personal boundaries routines & comfort zones problem roommate(s) bullying, cyberbullying & hazing the dangers of mixing alcohol and energy drinks cyber-security & online safety social media & cell phone safety phishing scams & identity theft active shooter preparedness & defensive actions viruses, malware and ransomware physical threat self-defense / safe dating / sexual harassment alcohol, drugs and prescription medication abuse party, bar & club safety caffeine and energy drinks travel safety - both on campus and semesters abroad credit card and ATM safety dorm room safety - fires, electrical, cooking, outside threats personal safety alarms and apps building confidence & developing a never quit attitude health, fitness, nutrition & hygiene Get the next best thing to being there for your child when they are away from home and your protection.
