Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship among organizational justice components, overall job satisfaction, and organizational commitment within the intercollegiate athletics setting. Perceptions of three organizational justice components (procedural, distributive, and interactional), overall job satisfaction, and organizational commitment were gathered from head and assistant coaches of NCAA Division I and III baseball, men's basketball, and wrestling programs. Findings indicated the following: (a) significant interactional effects were found between sport type and NCAA Division, (b) a significant interactional effect was found between sport type and job title, (c) no significant differences were present on perceptions of overall job satisfaction or organizational commitment, (d) different organizational justice components contributed uniquely to predicting both overall job satisfaction and organizational commitment among all sport types, and (e) while sport type did not significantly moderate the relationship between distributive justice and overall job satisfaction, marginal means plots did indicate interactions to be present. The discussion of the findings centers on three points. First, perceptions of organizational justice components among male sport coaches predict overall job satisfaction and organizational commitment differently. While the focus of intercollegiate athletics typically hovers around the topic of resource distribution, the present study found perceptions of overall job satisfaction and organization commitment of non-revenue-generating coaches is predicated by procedural and interactional justice. Second, interactional justice was supported as an independent component of organizational justice in the sport setting. Athletic decision makers have the ability to change perceptions of fairness with little organizational change. However, challenges do exists as some athletic decision makers do not have the ability to change their interactional approach. Finally, sport type did interact in the relationship between organizational justice and both overall job satisfaction and organizational commitment. This finding challenges athletic decision makers to seek the use of decision making models that affect all sport types in a positive manner. Suggestions for practical application by athletic department decision makers, including: (a) focus on interactions with coaches, (b) develop a scoring or tracking system of organizational justice components, and (c) segment sports based on revenue generation. Finally, the present study provides three suggestions for future research: (a) expand the literature of interactional justice, (b) further define of sport type based on revenue generation, and (c) examine these variables outside of intercollegiate athletics.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Athletics' rise in importance on college campuses has been widely-documented (e.g., Frey, 1986; Putler & Wolfe, 1999; Sperber, 1990, 2000; Trail & Chelladurai, 2000; Zimbalist, 1999) and remains highly scrutinized by popular media outlets and select sport scholars. Increased importance of intercollegiate athletics within the sports landscape brought heightened scrutiny and calls for reform (Sperber, 1990, 2000). This study utilized stakeholder theory (Freeman, 1984) to look into the reform possibilities of three issues important to the functioning athletic department. These areas include the payment of student-athletes, over-commercialization in intercollegiate athletics, and academic difficulties and improprieties faced by student-athletes. Eight focus groups, a combination of participant observation and individual interviews (Madriz, 2000), were formed to gain perceptions of the aforementioned three important issues facing intercollegiate athletic departments. Five stakeholder groups closely aligned with a large, Division-IA athletic department, student-athletes (revenue and non-revenue), faculty members (familiar with sport and non-familiar with sport), coaches (revenue and non-revenue sports), athletic administrators and student-athlete academic support officers were chosen as parties with vested interests in the issues at hand. Themes that emanated from the participating stakeholder groups offered valuable insight into the views and perceptions of those groups toward athletic reform. For the most part, each stakeholder within the various focus groups, and across stakeholder groups, held similar views toward the reform issues investigated. Other thematic findings included the view that student-athletes are compensated fairly for their efforts on the playing field, but the time and effort they put forth on the field keeps them from gaining employment that helps pay various expenses. Also, commercialization in intercollegiate athletics is vital to the continued support of intercollegiate athletics, and any restriction would spell the end for non-revenue sports that are not widely-supported by the American population. Lastly, the academic welfare of the student-athlete is important to the athletic department, and for the most part, it believes it succeeds in educating and developing the intercollegiate athletic student-athlete. Numerous efforts are made by the various factions within the intercollegiate athletic organization that attempt to support the academic responsibilities faced by the student-athletes.

Though there is literature, commentary, and coalitions responding to the impact this paradigm has on the African-American population, there is close to zero discourse when it comes to the inequities the phenomenon places on women. In the history of Division I men's basketball, there have been no women as head men's basketball coaches. The purpose of this study is to use hegemony as a theoretical framework to examine the white male power structure operating in the intercollegiate athletic space of American higher education and how it has, if at all, impacted one woman's journey. Ethnographic interviewing techniques and portraiture will qualitatively extract and demonstrate the data of a woman coaching an intercollegiate men's basketball team at a higher education institution in Canada. Providing increased opportunities for women in coaching men's intercollegiate sports teams would inevitable increase the probability of decision-makers to hire more qualified personnel. Additionally, the enormous finances institutions direct towards intercollegiate athletics behooves these stakeholders to broaden the scope of their men's coaching positions to ensure finding the most effective individual to meet the needs of the institution. This study conceptually worked through Lawrence-Lightfoot's five tools to code the data: Repetitive refrains, resonant metaphors, institutional and cultural rituals, triangulation, and revealing patterns. The emerging themes unfolded were Personal Variables, Stubbornness, Advocates, and Situational Factors. These themes offer insight into not only counter-hegemonic practices for higher educational leaders to consider, but also implications and recommendations to seriously digest for the best interests of American HEI's.

Book excerpt: Throughout the sport and exercise psychology literature, one topic that has been given increased attention is the leadership of athletes. Prior work has focused on the coach as a primary source of leadership for athletes and how that leadership can affect various student-athlete outcomes (Coleman, 1961; Gould, Chung Smith, & White, 2006; Smoll & Smith, 1989, 2006). These investigations have provided a wealth of information regarding coaches' influence over athletes in a number of different domains, such as motivation (Eccles,1996; Jowett, 2008; MacLean, 2012; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003), persistence (Calvo et al., 2010; Ryan & Deci, 2000), and performance (Gearity & Murray, 2011; Gillet, Vallerand, Amoura, & Baldes, 2010). Lacking the same depth of examination is the relationship between coaches and other educational leaders in an athlete's life that would provide much needed insight into their performance in an academic setting.More specifically, there is almost no research examining the relationships between coaches and teachers as they "co-lead" student-athletes. Given that teachers have been identified as one of the prime drivers of student achievement (Darling-Hammond, 1997) and coaches have been identified as one of the critical influences on student behavior (Smith, Smoll & Cummings, 2009) the lack of empirical evidence for the leadership dyad of teacher-coach on student-athlete outcomes is unfortunate. Seizing the opportunity to advance our understanding of the relationship dynamics and ecology of leaders in the inner-city high schools (Khalifa, 2012) will provide a more nuanced and comprehensive picture of the environment being established for Minority student-athletes.If educators (teachers and coaches) are similarly connected by the common goal of producing a successful student-athlete, a careful examination of their relationships is clearly in order. In other words, if we can begin to understand what the leaders think about each other-which is undoubtedly related to the way they treat each other-then we start to gain further insight into the relational ecology within which the minority student-athlete flourishes or flounders (Khalifa, Dunbar, & Douglas, 2013). Therefore, the overarching goal of my dissertation work is to address this gap in the literature by investigating the mutual perceptions of and behaviors between teachers and coaches as a precursor to understanding minority student-athlete outcomes in inner-city environments.
