It further analyzed whether UNO Educational Leadership graduate students' opinions are related to school district size, professional experience, administrative experience, or area certification. When thinking about the considerable amount of training and knowledge it takes to be well versed in the rules and regulations of special education, it's difficult to imagine how a principle of a school can take on this responsibility in light of an already demanding position. The principal's responsibilities have shifted significantly beyond that of a building manager. This study analyzed responses from candidates in the Educational Leadership program at the University of Nebraska-Omaha regarding their perceptions of their knowledge of special education law. This study found a significant difference in respondents perception of special education law based upon the amount of coursework one has in the area of special education. While this study denotes statistically significant differences upon respondents in the Educational Leadership program at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the study suggests a need for additional research.

Book excerpt: Effective school leadership has become a priority of educational policy due to its perceived importance in improving and sustaining student achievement. However, leadership is not a unilateral act as perceptions from followers affect the ability of leaders to influence the school outcomes as measured by student achievement. Previous research suggested a relationship between educational leadership and school climate, and between school climate and student achievement. The focus of this study was to explore an alternative measure of discrepancy in the perceptions of leadership behaviors between principals' self-report and teachers' report, and to examine relationship among this discrepancy measure, school climate, and student achievement. This quantitative correlational study collected data from two secondary data sets: (a) the data from a previous study by Courtney Fee in 2008 on perceptions of leadership behaviors and school climate; and (b) the reports on student scores in the standardized tests published by the Department of Education of the state of Tennessee. Through multiple linear regression analysis, the findings suggested that school climate was significantly related to student achievement while the magnitude of perception discrepancy of leadership behaviors between teachers and their principals was not a significant predictor of student achievement. The study provided further insights into understanding the relationship among educational leadership, school climate, and student achievement. Recommendations and suggestions for future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: It is important for school leaders to understand how students who identify as belonging to specific races, ethnicities, or cultures experience school climate. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the perceptions of school leaders on their culturally responsive leadership (CRSL) practices and discipline actions. This study focused on the perceptions of 142 school leaders (Principals and Superintendents) who work in public schools in New York State. The sample consisted of school building and district leaders who work in elementary, middle, and high school settings in urban, suburban, and rural communities. The study was conducted utilizing the Culturally Responsive School Leader (CRSL) Survey, an anonymous self-reporting school building and district leader online survey, to gather information about principal and superintendents' perceptions of their CRSL practices and discipline actions in their schools and districts. This study addressed the need identified by Voight (2013) stating WestEd's research findings suggests that addressing school-climate issues, including the gaps in how different student groups experience school climate, may be an important and complementary strategy for reducing achievement gaps. Furthermore, that nurturing school environments that are safer and supportive for all students, and make all students feel part of a larger community, is an important step toward education equity and a promising step in the direction of closing the racial/ethnic school climate gap.The findings revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between the role of the school leader (principal or superintendent) and their perceptions of their CRSL practices and discipline actions. Findings were further explained and supported by principals and superintendents' comments on the challenges of implementing CRSL practices and discipline actions in their schools or districts through the open-ended response on the CRSL perception survey. Ultimately, the study serves as a resource to assist the K-12 education leadership community identify where they are on the CRSL practices and discipline actions continuum to follow actionable steps to utilize as a guide to implement in schools district wide as they work towards transformational leadership.

Although the concept has ancient roots and the term has existed in Western societies since the 1970s, only recently has it gained general public recognition. In schools, RJ’s popularity is rising world-wide. In fact, education is the fastest growing area for the practice of RJ. Despite an increasing number of schools embracing the approach, it is not clear what educational RJ practitioners are trying to achieve. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions: How Restorative Justice is Used in Schools to Control and to Engage focuses on the use of RJ in one school in Scotland and one in Canada. While important to understand the intentions of educators in using RJ in schools, those aims must be examined alongside the actual impact that such practices have on students. RJ can be understood and experienced in dramatically different ways by those implementing it. For some, RJ is about creating an environment of and for student engagement that challenges traditional systems of discipline and facilitates learning. For others, RJ is simply another tool for solidifying compliance and meting out punishment, albeit in a kinder, gentler way. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions provides the opportunity to delve deeply into the stories of two schools and the adults and young people who inhabit them, and consider the broad impact that differing educator understandings of RJ have on students. Adult Intentions, Student Perceptions is a timely book for RJ advocates and critics alike. It challenges a common assumption of some RJ advocates that implementing RJ necessarily creates a classroom environment of social engagement (where students are empowered to engage with one another and think critically, and school relationships and hierarchies are transformed). The student experience relayed in this book shows that RJ can as readily be mobilized to create classroom environments of social control (where students are taught obedience and compliance, and authority and hierarchy are reinforced). Reimer argues that RJ, by itself, does not guarantee certain qualities of relationship, but RJ does allow us to examine relational qualities and ask questions of how school relationships are used to engage and/or control students.

While research has started to emphasize the role of empathy among educational leaders, there is a lack of discussion on teacher perceptions of empathy among educational leaders and how they perceive it may actually affect school culture and climate. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the field of education started experiencing an increase in job stress due to "inadequate school funding, balancing school management with instructional leadership, new curriculum standards, educating an increasingly diverse population, shouldering responsibility that once belonged to home or in the community, and then facing possible termination if schools don't show instant results" (Hargreaves & Fink, 2006, p.12). Reports as early as 2008 indicate a trend in teachers leaving the field of education resulting in an onset of a teacher shortage. The disruption to education due to the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented and has only added more stress to an already high-stress profession.The key findings in this study reveal that empathy among educational leadership serves as a pillar for positive school culture and climate, thus giving merit to its importance. In relation to the research questions, the findings have identified viable leadership practices and supportive leadership qualities that ultimately influence student progress within elementary schools.
