While much of the literature on resilience focuses on children and younger adolescents, there are relatively few studies that examine resilience levels among college students and the adult population in general. Specifically, this study examined the internal protective factors of optimism, self-efficacy, and dimensions of psychological well-being and the ways in which they predict resilience levels among college students. The effects of optimism, self-efficacy, and psychological well-being on college students' resilience levels were also hypothesized to be different between different genders and between different races. Data were collected in the spring and fall at a large southeastern university. A survey design was employed in this study to analyze resilience levels among a sample of college students. Multiple regression techniques were used to analyze the data. The results confirmed the protective effects of self-efficacy, external protective factors, and two dimensions of psychological well-being. Empirical evidence shows that some of the internal protective factors operate differently in explaining resilience among different racial and gender groups. Implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract; This study focuses on the role that Adverse Childhood Experiences play in the lives of today's college students and how Protective Factors can be integrated and enhanced to increase a student's level of Resilience. This descriptive, causal-comparative quantitative study looked at participants' levels of Resilience, what Adverse Childhood Experiences they entered college with, and what role Protective Factors played in mitigating the impacts of those Adverse Childhood Experiences on the levels of Resilience. Results indicated older students scored a higher Resilience score than their younger counterparts. Goal efficacy had the strongest effect on Resilience levels, while planning and goal efficacy explained 36% and 26% of the variability of Resilience, respectively. When discussing the full or partial mediation of the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Resilience, planning and social support both partially mediated the effect. These results indicated the important role Protective Factors play in the success of college students as well as the importance of Resilience as a whole. Implications for practice suggest institutions of higher education should examine how to assist students with increasing levels of Resilience to mitigate the impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences to increase their levels of success while at college. Future research should be conducted on the role of Protective Factors and how they can further mediate the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience.

Book excerpt: This study examined parents’ resilience, family risk factors and social supports, and children’s protective factors related to resilience and possible behavioral concerns. The setting was a Head Start Center in North Texas serving parents and their children ages three to five. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory were used as frameworks to guide the research. The sample for this study was comprised of 99 parents of 102 children in the Head Start Center. The 14-Item Resilience Scale (RS-14) (Wagnild, 2014), the Adverse Life Events scale (Tiet, Bird, Davies, Hoven, Cohen, Jensen & Goodman, 1998), the Perceived Social Support, Family and Perceived Social Support, Friends scales (Procidano & Heller, 1983), and the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) (LeBuffe & Naglieri, 1999) were used as measurements in this non-experimental, descriptive and correlational design. The parents, of the children perceived themselves in the following manners as measured by survey instruments: First, parents reported moderately high levels of resilience along with moderate levels of adversity in their lives. In addition, parents reported moderate levels of social support from friends and higher levels of support from family. The correlations between The 14-Item Resilience Scale and the Adverse Life Events scale, Perceived Social Support, Family and Perceived Social Support, Friends scales appeared to be minimal and non-significant. Their perceptions of their children’s resilience as measured by the DECA were in the Typical or Average range. Parents indicated that their children could self-regulate while their children’s level of attachment/relationship were considered slightly lower. Correlations of the parents’ scores on the RS-14 and the children’s scores on the DECA produced a trend towards significance.
