Book excerpt: The wide adoption of electronic data interchange (EDI) by the SMEs is important for the success of the technology. A review of past EDI adoption literature indicates that past studies have focused mainly on large businesses. With the advance of technology, SMEs businesses are now able to enjoy the benefits of EDI. SMEs businesses are the backbone of the economy in Nigeria, despite these facts, there are relatively no identified studies on perception of EDI adoption among the Nigerian SMEs. A conceptual model is then proposed to address the above issues. The model may help Nigerians SMEs to achieve higher impacts on their businesses from the adoption of EDI and may also provide strategic roadmap for SMEs in other African countries. Using a technology, organization, and environment framework, this study tested a perception base model against the data collected from 204 SMEs firms in Nigeria. Four factors that were found to be significant in the SMEs EDI adoption were direct benefits, indirect benefits, financial resources, and external pressure to adopt EDI. The results of this study could provide insight into unique factors that drive EDI adoption by SMEs in Nigeria.

This research uses empirical evidence to evaluate the state of EDI and the willingness of SMEs to connect electronically to a large distribution centre in South Africa. Practitioners of EDI are aware of the necessity for high penetration levels to make EDI successful. Furthermore, it investigates the EDI adoption rate from the viewpoint of a small business. However, penetration might be hindered by the refusal of small firms to accept EDI. Based on prior research this model incorporates four factors that are hypothesized to have an influence on EDI Adoption. This survey was concerned about four potential strategies for achieving business objectives namely: organizational readiness, external pressure, perceived benefits and security. Data was collected from 105 firms who responded to an e-mail survey. The findings reveal that external pressure was the strongest positive factor associated with the intent to adopt EDI. No support was found for security. In addition, it suggests that there is a general need for more managerial support as well as compatibility with systems among small firms. Finally, these findings add support to the importance of diffusion of Innovation theories, Interorganizational Systems and Technology Acceptance Models.

Research aims: This paper aims to investigate what factors influence the intention of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Saudi Arabia to adopt the electronic data interchange (EDI). Design/Methodology/Approach: A survey involving 269 SMEs in Saudi Arabia was conducted and data were analysed using multiple regression. Research findings: Results demonstrate that perceived EDI benefits, organisational readiness, government support and pressure from business partners are significant determinants of the SMEs' intention to adopt the EDI in Saudi Arabia. Theoretical contribution/Originality: This study enriches the understanding on the issue of EDI adoption in an Arab country; it specifically fills the lack of academic research that concerns SMEs in Saudi Arabia. Practitioner/Policy implications: The insights gained from this study can facilitate industry practitioners to develop comprehensive business strategies and effective institutional policies to facilitate EDI implementation in Saudi Arabia. Research limitation/Implications: The findings of this study may, to some degree, be confounded by external validity since the sampling frame is restricted to SMEs located in Saudi Arabia only. Due to the size of the sample in the study, there is an imperative need for further research to be conducted with a larger sample size.

Book excerpt: Electronic commerce (E-commerce) is a technological innovation that enables small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete on the same level with their larger counterparts. And it has the potential to improve efficiency and productivity in many areas and, therefore, has received significant attention in many countries of the world. A thorough analysis of the impact of the internet and e-commerce across firms, industries and economies is necessary to separate hype from reality. However, several researchers have called for the investigation of the association between the perceptions of e-commerce and the barriers to its adoption in developing countries. It is however on record that SMEs the world over are faced with significant challenges that compromise their ability to function and to contribute optimally to the respective economies where they operate. This study was conducted in three states of Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja and Enugu states) with the use of interviews to gather relevant data; the aim of which was to understand the challenges which serve as barriers to E-Commerce adoption by small and medium scale enterprises in the Nigerian context. Findings indicates that small and medium scale online present is at best unknown. The most common e-Commerce applications used by most SMEs include but not limited to the use of e-mails for communication purposes and a simple website for basic product information - information contained are usually outdated as most of these websites are hardly updated. Findings revealed, among others, that lack of and total absence of a regulatory framework on e-Commerce security, as well as technical skills, and basic infrastructures are some of the barriers to electronic commerce adoption. The findings however, provide a constructive insight to financial practitioners, governments as well as other stakeholders on the need to give e-commerce a place in all aspects of e-commerce activities.

Book excerpt: Purpose - The purpose of this (qualitative, multiple-case) study is to determine how small-to medium-sized enterprise (SME) leaders in Nigeria use information and communication technology (ICT) adoption as a business strategy to increase profitability and compete globally.Design/methodology/approach - The participants for this study consisted of executive-level SME leaders who had the authority to approve ICT implementation within their respective organizations. Individual interviews were undertaken with participants to gain an understanding of their experience of determining the merits of and implementing ICT. The technology acceptance model, which specifies the relationship between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward computer use and intention to use technology, was applied as a framework to explain the Nigerian SME's ICT adoption strategies.Findings - Four major themes emerged from the data analysis: ICT adoption factors, ICT roles and benefits, role of government and SME success factors. The findings of this study may help SME leaders and government leaders address many of the factors inhibiting the adoption of ICT in SMEs in Nigeria.Practical implications - This study may ensure that SMEs are successful and able to create jobs, which in turn may help to promote socioeconomic development through adoption of ICT.Originality/value - The findings from this study contribute to the knowledge base regarding factors that affect ICT adoption by SME leaders as a business strategy to increase profitability and compete globally, particularly within SMEs in Lagos, Nigeria. It further addressed the gap in existing literature regarding other factors such as the influence of culture on ICT adoption, cost of ICT implementation, available ICT skills, infrastructure and ICT knowledge gap as the primary impeding factors of ICT adoption in Nigerian SMEs.

Its application to businesses especially small and medium scale businesses have brought about multi-faceted improvements in processes leading to unprecedented enhancement in service deliveries and profit maximizations. However, the environment has become highly competitive and despite the glaring importance of the innovation, its diffusion and adoption within the Nigerian SMEs seems at best a mirage. This paper explores the reasons for the gaps in adoptions among SMEs despite its availability and further expounds on its importance through a qualitatively analyzed study of selected SMEs within the Nigerian state. Results shows a total disconnect between the benefits of the innovation, skill requirements and its actual adoption among various SME operators. This paper recommends a massive awareness drive backed by government and other stakeholders for a full harvest of the rich potentials of ICTs.
