Book excerpt: This research examines the interaction of acoustic and lexical information in the identification of words in lexically ambiguous phoneme sequences. In Experiment 1, subjects show priming for the meaning of a large word like tulips when presented with a sequence of combinable short words like two lips. In Experiment 2 priming is found for the meaning of the second short word in similar sequences (e.g. lips in two lips). Finally, Experiment 3 demonstrates that listeners do not show priming for a short word like lips when it is pronounced as part of a larger word like tulips. The results of these experiments show that listeners sometimes access words other than those intended by speakers, and that they may simultaneously access words associated with several alternative parses of ambiguous sequences. Furthermore, they suggest that acoustic marking of word onsets places constraints on the success of lexical access. To account for these results, we present a new model of lexical access and segmentation, the Good Start model, which gives a principled account of these properties.

One series looked at the role of prosodic information in listeners' ability to recognize adjacent vowels and consonants cued by the common temporal feature of vowel duration. The stimuli consisted of syllables from a large sample of natural speech which listeners heard with prosodic context or without. Prosodic context was found to aid listeners in correctly attributing the phonological source of vowel duration. The second series of experiments examines the role of stress in syllable accessibility during the on-line comprehension of language and from short-term memory. During on-line comprehension stress is found to interact with lexical processing, while the effect of stress on syllable accessibility from short-term memory is not dependent on lexical effects. Yet, because phonetics and speech science are offspring of classical phonology, speech has been viewed as a sequence of discrete events-positions of the articulatory apparatus, waveform segments, and phonemes. Although this perspective has been mockingly referred to as "beads on a string", from the time of Henry Sweet's 19th century treatise almost up to our days specialists of speech science and speech technology have continued to conceptualize the speech signal as a sequence of static states interleaved with transitional elements reflecting the quasi-continuous nature of vocal production. This book, a collection of papers of which each looks at speech as a dynamic process and highlights one of its particularities, is dedicated to the memory of Ludmilla Andreevna Chistovich. At the outset, it was planned to be a Chistovich festschrift but, sadly, she passed away a few months before the book went to press. The 24 chapters of this volume testify to the enormous influence that she and her colleagues have had over the four decades since the publication of their 1965 monograph.

Normal temporal processing is important for us to be able to understand speech in quiet and in background noise. Decline in the temporal processing abilities specifically gap detection in noise with the age is well documented in the literature. However, less attention has been paid to effect of age on other temporal process and its relation to speech perception. The present study was undertaken to document effect of age on different temporal process in normal hearing listeners from 17-70 years of age.Temporal processes that were measured were modulation detection, backward masking, duration discrimination, duration pattern and gap detection.Apart from this speech perception in noise and speech perception with vocoded signal was also measured. Results showed a systematic age related decline temporal processing and speech perception abilities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the Symposium was to provide a meeting place for those working in the field of s·peech perception, whose main in terest is in the study of the perceptual processes in the deco ding of connected speech, hence the title Dynamic Aspects of Speech Perception. It was felt, after the meeting of the 8th ICA in London and the 2nd Speech Communication Seminar in Stockholm, 1974, that there should be an opportunity for an exchange of ideas on this topic with the emphasis on discussion and interpretation, rather than on the presentation of experimental results. The initiators set themselves up as a planning committee and asked the present editors to organize a symposium in Eindhoven at the Institute for Perception Research, which has a well established tradition in perceptual work. The present proceedings contain papers by contributors invited by the planning committee, as well as discussions. Most of the papers were circulated well in advance of the Symposium. We arranged the material in five sections: I. Theoretical Issues in Speech Perception Research II. Prosody in Speech Perception III. Some Storage Properties of Speech Perception IV. Book excerpt: Perceptual categorization is fundamental to the brain’s remarkable ability to process large amounts of sensory information and efficiently recognize objects including speech. Perceptual categorization is the neural bridge between lower-level sensory and higher-level language processing. A long line of research on the physical properties of the speech signal as determined by the anatomy and physiology of the speech production apparatus has led to descriptions of the acoustic information that is used in speech recognition (e.g., stop consonants place and manner of articulation, voice onset time, aspiration). Recent research has also considered what visual cues are relevant to visual speech recognition (i.e., the visual counter-parts used in lipreading or audiovisual speech perception). Much of the theoretical work on speech perception was done in the twentieth century without the benefit of neuroimaging technologies and models of neural representation. Recent progress in understanding the functional organization of sensory and association cortices based on advances in neuroimaging presents the possibility of achieving a comprehensive and far reaching account of perception in the service of language. At the level of cell assemblies, research in animals and humans suggests that neurons in the temporal cortex are important for encoding biological categories. On the cellular level, different classes of neurons (interneurons and pyramidal neurons) have been suggested to play differential roles in the neural computations underlying auditory and visual categorization. The moment is ripe for a research topic focused on neural mechanisms mediating the emergence of speech representations (including auditory, visual and even somatosensory based forms). Important progress can be achieved by juxtaposing within the same research topic the knowledge that currently exists, the identified lacunae, and the theories that can support future investigations. This research topic provides a snapshot and platform for discussion of current understanding of neural mechanisms underlying the formation of perceptual categories and their relationship to language from a multidisciplinary and multisensory perspective. It includes contributions (reviews, original research, methodological developments) pertaining to the neural substrates, dynamics, and mechanisms underlying perceptual categorization and their interaction with neural processes governing speech perception.

To this end, the auditory cortex of humans has developed the ability to process a remarkable amount of diverse acoustic information with apparent ease. In fact, a phylogenetic comparison of auditory systems reveals that human auditory association cortex in particular has undergone extensive changes relative to that of other species, although our knowledge of this remains incomplete. In contrast to other senses, human auditory cortex receives input that is highly pre-processed in a number of sub-cortical structures; this suggests that even primary auditory cortex already performs quite complex analyses. At the same time, much of the functional role of the various sub-areas in human auditory cortex is still relatively unknown, and a more sophisticated understanding is only now emerging through the use of contemporary electrophysiological and neuroimaging techniques. The integration of results across the various techniques signify a new era in our knowledge of how human auditory cortex forms basis for auditory experience. This volume on human auditory cortex will have two major parts. In Part A, the principal methodologies currently used to investigate human auditory cortex will be discussed. Each chapter will first outline how the methodology is used in auditory neuroscience, highlighting the challenges of obtaining data from human auditory cortex; second, each methods chapter will provide two or (at most) three brief examples of how it has been used to generate a major result about auditory processing. In Part B, the central questions for auditory processing in human auditory cortex are covered. Each chapter can draw on all the methods introduced in Part A but will focus on a major computational challenge the system has to solve. This volume will constitute an important contemporary reference work on human auditory cortex. Arguably, this will be the first and most focused book on this critical neurological structure. These features, intended primarily for use in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) front ends, allow different realizations of general time-frequency concepts to be easily implemented and tuned through a set of frequency and time-warping functions. The methods presented are flexible enough to allow evaluation of the relative importance of the spectral and temporal features and to explore the trade-off between time and frequency resolution. Extensive ASR experiments were conducted to evaluate various spectral-temporal properties using this unified framework.
